Skype

Just started using this as a few of my clients use it.

Anyone else use it? How do you find it? Do you use the skypeIn aswell?

Anyone who wants to contact me can get me with username accountaxsolutions.

Ozz 06-Oct-2005 15:01

Also do we need a Skpe thingy in the profile now?

Crunchy 06-Oct-2005 15:14

I've used Skype now for over a year. Great :bouncy: I don't know what SkypeIn is but I do use SkypeOut. Loaded it up with $25 last year and have still got $6 left. Do not "out" for inland calls. But for Foreign call's it's sometimes 75% cheaper. I've called Brazil, India, China everywhere it's good. Even better if the client has Skype, then it's free. Conference calls are useful too.

I'm not sure if it would be a good idea for here though. There would be no posts, everyone would be Skypeing instead

Ozz 06-Oct-2005 15:17

SkypeIn is where for 30 euros you get a number of your own plus voicemail and then people who only have BT etc can call you.

Eamonn 06-Oct-2005 16:33

I've had Skype running for a while now, so has Flanks.

Started using the latest version of Yahoo Messenger as well since it has both VoIP and webcam whereas Skype doesn't do webcam stuff.

Be interesting to see what happens to Skype now that eBay own it.

Don't think Skype will ever replace a forum where you get to communicate with a lot of people at the same time, especially ones that you don't know very well.

In it's early days, Skype encouraged users to find random people to talk to but never really took off (when was the last time you picked a completely random number to call?!)

The calls usually went along the lines of;
A: Hello there
B: Hello
A: So this Skype thing is really amazing isn't it?
B: Yes
............
A: Okay, bye!
B: Bye

Let's see if this works....

chicken 06-Oct-2005 16:34

update - yes it does (as long as you are a skype user)!

Eamonn 06-Oct-2005 16:49

A Skype link can be put into your sig.block using code like :

[ url=callto://yourname][ img ]http://goodies.skype.com/graphics/skypeme_btn_small_green.gif[/img]

les996 06-Oct-2005 17:10

Mine worked first time:smug: Did you know we are all Mavens on this post. You'll see everyone will be having Skype soon ;)

Eamonn 06-Oct-2005 18:23

For those of you with Skype facilities (and it will be a growing number of you over the not too distant future !) you can now put your Skype id in your board profile in the same way as for your email address, website name, Yahoo id, etc., etc.

So for those of you who have gone to the trouble of setting up your sig blocks, you can now remove that nasty bit of gobble-de-gook and update your msg board profile (use the 'Control Panel' link at the top of the screen)

les996 06-Oct-2005 19:07

did it - cool!!!

Ozz 06-Oct-2005 20:47

Superb Eamonn

We have been using Skype for over a year, we use in and out and Skype to Skype and now have dual phones.

Its reduced our phone bill dramatically and better still have cancelled a couple of lines as most of our calls are now made on Skype.

We also use Plusnet for our ISP and they include a fax number in the monthly charge so we have dumped two dedicated fax lines as well.

The Skype in we give to people who dont have Skype to phone us on when we are abroad, they pay the usual cost of a call to London and we pay the annual charge of 30 Euros, but we dont pay £1.50 min for people to phone our mobiles.

Ozz 06-Oct-2005 21:54

Yes I use plusnet with the fax number. Works well.

les996 06-Oct-2005 21:57

Plusnet for the fax for me too - works a treat!!!

Mr_S 06-Oct-2005 22:09

Stopped using Skype as during low periods of use your PC and broadband connection get used as a supernode, so CPU spikes to 100% and your broadband connection fills up. Not good if you're on a quota, and you can't stop the client acting as a supernode....

Some universities and corporates have started to ban it's use because of the effect it can have.

I've switched to VoipBusters (www.voipbusters.com) , which you can dial out any landline number from as well as the same features as Skype.

chicken 06-Oct-2005 22:46

Competition in broadband (across Europe) means that data transfer quotas will be a thing of the past. The bandwidth demands of Skype is pretty low anyway - certainly less than the downloading requirements of your average uni student!

Skype has been banned in several countries but this can only be enforced by the ISP putting a block on Skype's webpage. If you have access to the software elsewhere (email or mirror site) then you can get around it.

I used to work at a "large corporate" where the systems were locked down as tightly as practical but that didn't stop me from using it.....ahem....purely for research purposes.....ahem.

The power of Skype comes from the network effect - the more people that use it, the more valuable it becomes until it becomes ubiquitous and takes over the world.......mwah ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaa............

have to agree with you on the CPU comment (although never seen it go to 100%)

les;)

YMFB 06-Oct-2005 23:35

cheers Les, sometimes you cant see the wood for the trees.

Do you know how to include the same button on your e mail signature, I know I saw this somewhere but have been unable to locate it on the Skype site tonight.

les996 06-Oct-2005 23:36

no probs:roll:

Ozz 07-Oct-2005 10:21

YMFB just put this in your signature:

[ url=callto://steven.mep][ img]http://goodies.skype.com/graphics/skypeme_btn_small_green.gif[/img]

But delete the spaces in front of url and img. I had to put them otherwise it would put the button in my post!
