Card been cloned and have been cleared out ! Got home last night to a letter from natwest suggesting thier had been some odd activity on my account and i should get in touch to check, also my cards are now blocked as a precaution. So rang up and confirmed i was not in a safeway in london on monday and spent £12. anyway cut a long story short, they have managed to extend my OD from a respectable £1800 OD (paid next week) to now over £5000 OD  Last night it was 4k and this am they had done me for another grand and it was stopped on another £488 to ebuyer (patern forming here - keep reading if an ebuyer) so speaking to the bank today asking if they would allow me to come to a branch to get some cash as i have no cards or cash, they refuse as i am over my 5k overdraft limit, and they have rejected my mortgage payment today and charged me £29 for the honour. So it seems i cannot get my money, or pay my bills but someone who clones my card can spend over 3k of money i dont have with no problem !! i am a network admin and have a keen eye on security and things and people upto no good, i always am vigilant with cards and online stuff overall, i have used that card in 2 machines only and 3 retailers online only (card is only 4 weeks old) one of the online places is paypal other is play.com and other is ebuyer. Now its funny that as soon as all 3 people in natwest saw ebuyer the tone changed and it seems all is not well with security. Its wrong to speculate without facts, but my money (whats left of it) is there is a rotten egg inside flogging number and the 3 digit codes to the highest bidder. I have now asked / insisted that they remove my account and all transaction details from thier accounts system. They have closed my account and removed all card and payment traces but my details are kept (accounting reasons) So it goes to show it can happen to anyone so keep your cards safe, and keep an eye out on who's behind you at a till, etc etc I will be keeping my money under my mattress from now on (could mean a rough nights kip as its all coppers :D) [Edited on 12-10-2005 by crm250] |
Wow, sorry to hear about that :( But they will assume it and you'll pay nothing in the end, right? |
So it seems but have to wait with a frozen account for a week or so, and then it should be refunded. New account being setup but have the buggering about of changing all direct debits and those hassles to look forward to. Take care peeps |
Credit card fraud is my bigest fear they reported on the news last night that card fraud was down by one third since chip and pin. No help for you crm 250 so sorry to hear this, hope it all ends well for you :) |
Barstards...:flame: |
hope it works out for you, my wifes card was cloned and the scum used it for betting £2.5k on paddypower.com, our bank were very helpful and put it right, it took two days, obviously longer for the new cards. What I couldnt understand was that a friend later told me that if whatever the scum had placed a bet on had won the winnings would have been paid into the card that they used for the bet in the first place, it didnt appear to win anyway. |
Bloody hell Paul, sorry to hear about that; hope it all gets sorted PDQ |
So sorry :( |
that really sucks, i hope that you get it sorted quickly. |
Took me weeks to get my credit-card sorted out, even though it was for $20. Heres hoping you have better luck... |
Who or what is Ebuyer? Rgds, Rob |
A computer bits supplier... |
My father-in-law had his (pre chip and pin) card intercepted in the post before it reached him. They racked up about £4000 in London shops before he realised anything was wrong. The bank refunded the money immediately but what annoyed him was the police attitude. ie they took no interest at all and told him he had his money back, whats the problem mate? My father in law contacted all the shops, told them the time of the transactions and several of them had the people caught on CCTV. Guess what, despite this the police still did nothing. |
Ive said this before, fraud is perceived as a faceless crime, currently running at around 1 million a day! I bet you dont feel faceless at the minute crm! The ways of getting your details, run from a sophisticated electronic device, to swiping your card details when your not looking to intercepting it in the post. Your electronic details can then be emailed anywhere, and loaded on to the magnetic strip of anything ready for use. its almost getting more of an occurance to catch someone with a hooky credit card, than a hookey tax disc! i agree Bastwards! :flame: |
I've been done a few times, I never use my Debit card in restaurants or over the net (use Credit cards instead) anymore, because that seems to be the place where they get copied most. You should get your money back, I'm with Lloyds, and for my gripes with them in the past (like taking money out on the wrong days, for which they still didn't apologise) - they were excellent when it came to refunding the descrepancies. They credited the money back almost straightaway and sent us a form which we filled out, I guess its a bugger when you have to change accounts and stuff. Likewise with Am-Ex when I got done a while back, the card never arrived and I got calls from them asking for payment, spoke to them over the phone and they sorted it out, withour any fuss. Just needed to fill out a form a few days later. I never got any feedback as to whether they caught the gits or not - unlucky mate. |
Cheers all, the bank instantly refunded the first grand which was obvoiusly fraud, only thing is it gave them more money to withdraw on the duff card so still back to 5 grand overdrawn, i should be only 2100 over (still owe a bit on the RC30) To add insult to injury had a mail from cahoot, they sent me a new card and pin 3 weeks ago and guess what - yep shafted twice. Cant get much worse i dont think. On the upside am picking up the RC30 tommorow after its valves and cams check, cant wait to get back on that. Only hope it has almost a full tank of juice in it. Unlucky Paul, think it could have happened (and has) to anyone of us. Best of luck. ps - you could always sell the honda to BDG? |
Just as a thought, having been told that scammers prefer to go for gold/platinum/black cards, due to higher limits available, it may be better to have an ordinary card. No snob value though. I only have 2 cards, 1 snob card for personal use, and a bog standard plain one for business use. The ordinary business one gets more use, and has never been scammed in 25 years of use, the snob personal card has been scammed and changed a couple of times. The ordinary card still has a high enough limit to do some significant damage to the bank balance as well. The number on that card is **** **** **** **** Expiry date ** ** Security code ***:P |

I'll pay for it by credit card, preferably someone elses  |
