Time for the respray - which scheme do you like best? I am sending the panels off the the painter today and I was having the last minute doubts about either cloning the 888 SP4 look or the, much more subtle, (in my view) 1992 851 look. The bike will definitely have a white frame, carbon tank and black 5 spoke Marchisinis but it's not a genuine SPS. Because of that, I have mentally moved away from the SP4 clone and I think I prefer the late 851 look for it's uncluttered look. Clearly, mine would have the"888" on the side rather than "851". I'd appreciate your views as you lot are an enthusiastic and knowledgeable audience. What do you think? TIA, Rob |
Here's the alternative SP4/SPS scheme with the number board. Mich' and Agip logos. [Edited on 13-10-2005 by rob41b] |
Bit too plain as an 851 IMO. I'd either go for the SPS look or keep it as it is. Actually, I'd keep it as it is - 888 Strada looks are classic Ducati. |
It's going to single seat as Sue has decided that the 888 is too much like a funfair ride, alright in short doses:o |
Fair enough, but just have it in plain red with the "888 Superbike" decals on the side panels? Class in a glass. |
Tricolour? |
SP5 look I reckon - mmmm, tasty! |
I'm with Twinfan on this one. 851...Too plain SPx...Too fussy...To many itsy bitsy stickers...Ok if it is an SP but... 888...Just right in red with the original "Superbike" decals and an Agip sticker |
You boys.... I have been there with the Tricolour scheme but I don't think it really walks on the 888 bodywork. The deeper tail section allows the "V's" of colour to taper properly. As for the SP5, that's what I've got, gold frame and stickers, but I just like the older stickers in white/black/grey. |
Jools, Sounds like the bike you've just bought.:lol::lol::lol: |
Maybe this would be fastest??????? |
I assume your talking about including the number board for the SP5 too? I was going off of the SP4 scheme cos I don't want people to keep asking "Is that an SP4/S?" and then having to explain it's just my bitsa project. |

Oh....so it does :lol::lol::lol: I actually like that yellow one, it looks different but the 888 shape seems to suit yellow and carry it of very well. Very cool. I'm intrigued by the seat pad on it as well, that looks interesting. I've seen some black ones as well and they look very horny, but thinking about this I think that the 888 would look fabulous in quite a few colours as long as the paint job allows the shape of the bike to speak for itself. I know it's not exactly 888 tradition but even colours like an Imola silver might work...like I say, not if you want the bike to be in touch with it's history but... As long as the paint job doesn't get in the way of the bikes lines. The number board on the fairing of the SP4 just seems to interupt the clean lines somehow and doesn't work for me...not that I would let that put me off owning a real SP4 mind. The same goes for stickers, I find most sticker kits get in the way and break the bike up too much. What I was surprised about was that even applying a single Agip sticker to each side of the fairing it wasn't just a question of slapping them on. Originally I thought they would work if the back edge of them was parallel with the front edge of the air vent and about 2 inches in front. Nope, if you put them absolutely parallel to the airvent they don't look right to me, you need to cant them over so that the top is ever so slightly forward, it's only about 5mm but it don't half make a difference. I fiddled around for ages before I settled on the right position for them...all that just to get a single sticker to look right. [Edited on 13-10-2005 by Jools] |
Jools, The seat pad is a Corbin. I have one and it makes 100+ miles bearable. Rgds, Rob |
White frame equals the period look to my eyes, combined with a touch of carbon showing. Not a fan of stickers. |
Alternative look:o |
Welllllllll, I like the mirrors. |
sp but put the numberboards on as stickers - not painted on. That way if you get bored you can just take em off. |
That yellow 'un is tasty! I'm a bit biased though ;) |
SP5 with boards but as said do it so you can remove it. so what if they ask if it is let em keep thinking :eureka: |
Hmmm, I might do it that way, but for the SP4. Start with the 851 scheme that I have pictured and add the number panels and Agip logo as stickers over the laquer. I do have two spare sets. I don't think I'd fancy trying to apply the seat panel decal myself though. Lots of curves and direction changes:o |
you could always try this scheme :burn: |
front...no numbers on rear side panel IMO looks understated, as does the whole bike. BUT it's mine and I'm biaised slightly :sing: [Edited on 13-10-2005 by 851neil] |
It's gotta be this one!1Biased?Me?NEVER!!Ok,maybe a little bit.I will be adding Michelin stickers over the winter though.:D |
Oh and putting billet calipers on. |
Oh,and a pcIII with my new race system and spaghetti!! |
Can you guys get track panels for these things? They be just BEGGING for a caning around Cadwell or somewhere!! Grrr! |

Would be A1 Jasp if it had proper number 1's' on it... Nat |
We have had this discussion before. At least it's the real thing and not a "Wannabe".:P |
Agreed that yellow one looks fabulous. Whoever did that corona thing needs stringing up !! Rob - I really like the SP3 look. I think the SP3 colours with the later seat unit would look 'cock on' !! I think your right about the SP4 scheme. I love it to bits, but if you went SP3 stylee I think it would be subtlely different with the later seat unit and would get people asking questions for the right reasons. Other than that..what about about a 'police' polen/fallappa race replica ?? Looking forward to seeing the end result mate anyway. Nat |

Ner ner ner...at least mines got proper wheels... |
And,If it bugs you that much,You send me the number ones and the "Campione del mondo superbike" stickers and i will have the seat repainted('cos they are laquered on!!).Deal?LOL |
And yes,it bugs me too-so stop reminding me 'cos no-one else notices!!! |
Sorry luv....:D Swap my seat unit for your motor ?? :eureka: Nat |
Nat, What scheme do you mean, SP3, White seat number panel, blacked bottom of faiting and Large "Ducati" logo with "Agip" then "Desmo" above? Personally, I don't think the blacked bottom side panel thing would work as it's just there to allow the red to flow from the side panel to the deep old style seat. Rgds. Rob |
I think youve just found your colour scheme Rob. I defy anyone in here to tell me that that wouldnt look the absolute business with the later style tank and seat unit !! Nice subtle touches like 888 badges instead of 851 would set it off a treat. Differnt, classy, and true to the bike. I still have a few new SP3 fairings left, and when I was putting them away the other night I remember thinking how classy they looked with the matt black lowers and white pinstripe. No question for me..thats the one fella..!! Nat [Edited on 13-10-2005 by Nattyboy] |
![]() Right thats my paint scheme sorted for this winter then :D [Edited on 13-10-2005 by Screwy] |
Nice easy job for you screwy..carbon front guard, black the wheels and your half way there !! Nat |

Just have to decide if I,m going to go with USD forks or keep the M1R,s . Slowly getting the bits together but still not 100% sure if I,m going to fit them , as I find the M1R,s to be more than adaquate but have to admit USD,s do look better . Oh and I need to sort out some cans as one had split , I had to Jury rig some 900 Superlight cans to fit so I could get to Cadwell Sunday :( [Edited on 13-10-2005 by Screwy] |
which USD's would fit - oops thread hijack - I'll start a new one... |
