I read this tonight & couldn't resist posting it after some recent threads on here, this rather eloquently puts another point of view over I think.....

If you were having a vasectomy.

I’m guessing you wouldn’t be directing the surgeon’s scalpel.

If your house was on fire.

I’m guessing you wouldn’t be directing the firemen’s hoses.

Why not?

They take their cut of your hard earned wedge. Surely it’s your right to be able to tell them what to do? You probably had the odd game of doctors and nurses when you were younger. You may even have put a Scout camp fire out. Doesn’t this make you more than qualified to offer your opinion?

No? That’s strange.

I’m sure the Fire Service employees and surgeons would welcome your input. You could dazzle them with all of the knowledge you’ve gleaned from London’s Burning and Extreme Makeovers. I’m sure most of them would be more than happy to listen to your views.

You may find the odd one or two who think they know best. Fools. Who do they think they are?

If this happens, what you need to do is to announce loudly to all who are present that you have experience in something irrelevant. Get your camera phone out and stick it in the faces of everyone who has chosen not to listen to you. Then find a piece of paper and write down every number and name you are given. Threaten to complain/sue/write to your MP/stamp your feet and sulk.

That’ll show them.

It’s such a relief that this rarely happens to me when I’m at work. You seem to realise that I’m a professional and I know what I’m doing. Phew.

There are times that you could offer your much valued thoughts. My colleagues and I are always willing to listen. Your opinion will be taken on board and your pearls of wisdom will be shared amongst us. Probably during our sombre debates in the canteen.

How about instructing us to arrest someone who hasn’t committed an offence?

Or not to arrest someone who has?

Or to arrest everyone except you?

Or to arrest someone for an offence you’ve just invented?

Or how we should be out catching ‘real’ criminals?

Or how certain sections of the Highway Code don’t apply in your case?

Or how to direct traffic so that you don’t get held up?

Or how we played too rough with the man with the knife?

Or how we should have waited to be stabbed first?

Or how we only picked on him because of his ethnic origin?

You see? You can help us out with your balanced judgement. Don’t be shy, we’d greatly appreciate it. Although, to make sure you get our attention, precede any comment with “I have a law degree”.

Just so we take you seriously.

what? Did I wake up on a different planet today?? If my house was on fire, yes I'd probably be shouting and hollering and pointing at the fire like the rest of us. Vasectomy?! Wouldn't you be unconscious?

Mind you, certain sections of the Highway Code not applying.....that'll be the cyclists then!

Just like surgeons never amputate the wrong limb, and firemen never start the fires, policemen never arrest the wrong people.

Why do some police officers assume they are god's gift and that everyone else are idiots?
Is that because (or why?) some members of the public assume they are above the law and that all its officers just haven't realised it yet?

Nah! I've suffered both interpretations and guess it's just that law of human nature again, you can't please all the people all of the time :pig:

Unfortunately not as I have just found out. You have to sit there while the nurse tells you she's good friends with your wife, 'and how are the kids by the way' and the doc is there talking about Chelsea FC.

My take on this-it's not the police who are the problem-it's the lawmakers-we all know the saying 'The law is an ass'...............
Like the law which I am sure is still on the statute book which states that within London a hackney carriage(that's a black cab to you and me) has to carry a bale of hay for the horse.:o
I don't mind the road traffic act being applied to me, and if I get it wrong I get a talking to or a ticket-what REALLY winds me up is when members of the goverment seem to be immune to the law-like Tony Blair getting himself driven down the M4 bus lane because he was late-why shouldn't he get a ticket-you or I would-it's not as though he was being led by police. He is the prime minister therefore responsible for the law, he's even a barrister for goodness sake-so why does he think he is above the law????:flame:

You may be surprised by how many of your colleagues (assuming you are indeed a police officer) don't have a sccoby doo what the highway code says.

I am getting bored with the anti-police thing. I personally think most of them do a very good job in sometimes difficult circumstances, especially when facing the ungrateful public. Most of my dealing with the Police have been very positive with only one exception.

Unfortunately there are bad apples in every barrel and it is inevitable that there will be some in the Police Force.

You and yours are what keep our society safe; with out you it would be anarchy. Yes there are some of your colleagues that may well let the uniform down but that’s the same no matter what profession you may like to look at. I think that it is the responsibility of the higher ranks to worm out these people and to deal with them. I personally know 4 officers all from differing backgrounds and without exception they are all good people. I have been told some stories by them that some would like to use to “have a go at them” but what needs to be remembered here is that they are all just normal folks trying to get along in life. For those of you that have been on the wrong end of a bad one I do feel very sorry for you but please look at the bigger picture, where would you go if your house has been robbed, where would you go if your beloved Ducati has been nicked and where would you go if you dear mum has been mugged, and before you go saying that they don’t do anything ask your self why, because there are just not enough officers out there. If that is the case write to your MP and anyone else that maybe relevant.

And before anyone labels me as a sycophant I’ve had more than a few run-ins with the old bill and all because I broke the rules, and believe me I was one of the real bad boys.

Nowt to do with the right to tell someone what to do.

Rules cannot be written to cover every eventuality, common sense has a part to play,

"Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the slavish observance by fools" the key there being "Slavish observance"

Don't care who the "expert" was, Surgeon, Fireperson, mechanic, Policeperson, lawyer, Pilot, roadsweeper, etc if I thought they were about to fowl up or make an error of judgement I would say so.

A blind unshakable belief in the Knowledge, Skill and ability of others is necessary in a lot of situations, but sometimes little things happen that you think are not "just right".

Cuts both ways,

Patient 1: Doctor you have marked up my right leg for amputation when It's my left that needs to come off.
Doctor 1: Oh dear yes your right, I've got your notes mixed up with Mrs Bloggs, thank heavens you noticed

Patient 2: Doctor you have marked up my right leg for amputation when It's my left that needs to come off.
Doctor 2: Nurse, time to knock this know it all out.

Patient 1 still has a good leg left and maybe Doctor 1 had had their pride a bit dented.

Patient 2. hasn't got a leg to stand on.

I hope this post illustrates the point I'm trying to get across, rules/law SOMETIMES need to be broken, the situation demands it.

I'm happy to let the police get on and do their job, cos most of them do it very well. But it concerns me to think that the opinion of the boys in blue is that Joe Public shouldn't voice his concerns and/or opinion over how OUR society is policed!
Just seems a little arrogant to me.

I think youll find it is joe public who runs the show on some comittee or other!
