Fuel pump question
 

Hi

I am pretty new to Ducati ownership being a refugee from the dark world of big two strokes so please bear with me!

On turning the key the fuel pump on my bike sort of squeaks into life and sometimes sounds to be struggling to turn over. I assume that this is not right and that the fuel pump may be on its way out. Is there any other problem that would cause these symptoms?

The bike was running quite badly the last time I rode it especialy at high revs and I assumed my stuffed battery may have been responsible, I am now thinking it may have been down to the fuel pump?

Any help would be appreciated, its a 748s by the way not that it makes a lot of difference.

Yep, it might be a good time to change the filter too

Most likely to be the flter rather than the pump. Change it asap before it fries the regulator as well.

Ok got the tank off, is the fuel filter tank mounted (held in by the large circlip) or line mounted, I am just being really lazy rather than looking myself!

The filter is the silver cylindrical thing inside the tank.

held in by a circlip? I tell you why I ask.............I have just seen this on e-bay but it is an inline one so looks like the wrong part.

Re the ebay filter, i'm not sure that the price is much different at a real dealers you know.

ok thanks, sorry to be a pain but is it the item held in by the circlip next to the fuel pump? if not do you remove the fuel pump to gain access?

Well not sure cos i've got an ST4 but i don't think you need to remove the pump. The filter is held by a circular clip and there should be a u shaped rubber pipe coming out of the top of it. It looks just like the ebay picture!

On the ST you take the plate off the bottom of the tank and the whole pump, level sender and filter comes out mounted on it. The filter looks like an "inline" affair because it does mount like that, but inside the tank.

Sorry, can't be specific for your bike but it's likely to be very similar.

If you download the parts list its quite obvious how it all goes together. Difficult to explain in words though!

ok its all in bits, excuse my ignorance but I just cannot believe how much stuff is in the tank of my 748, my RG5 just had a fuel tap!

There was a lot of brown gunk in the tank, and the fuel filter was blocked pretty good, should get it back together tomorrow following a good tank cleaning.

I am hoping for some better performance as it was nasty last time I rode it.
