748r clutch

Hi there new to the club but in need of sum advice??

On my 748r the bolts that hold the springs in place with the collers are all at different lnghths .IE. one is out further than the others .

How tightly adjusted do they need to be and can you use lock tight to stop the bolts from loosening again
??
thanks

Hello and welcome, with regards to your clutch you just tighten them up (pinch tight) and that should be enough, there should be enough pressure on the spring to keep the bolt in place.

I've never had to use locktite etc on the pressure plate bolts personally, maybe someone else can shed some light on that for you.

I assume the bars open then? :eureka: Actually just a nice latté for me, bit too early yet

Jon's right. The bolts should all be screwed down tight. Just nip them up though as they can shear. They are only M5.
Don't use a threadlock on them, just a smear of grease as they can corrode in place making them difficult to get out.

I'll have a JD an' Coke thanks ;)

Thanks for posting a question that I was about to ask! Welcome - this is a really frienbdly and helpful board - I am pretty new but will be hopefully attending some rideouts next year (so long as they are slow enough for my lardy pace!) - I would like a pint of Dogsbolter please

Stainless bolts are a good replacement if you're taking them out, as these won't corrode in place and cause problems later.

You can buy them in sets off eBay for about £15, but I would advise you to search for the right size bolt on eBay instead and pick them up for pennies!

eg:

(don't know if that's the right size though - Nelly will tell you!)

I've used Tek Hardware before off ebay and he's been great.

Does the R have a slipper clutch?

Yes, a very simple (read: cheap) ramp-only design which isn't much use, except to get the slipper in there for race homologation purposes ;)

rockhopper 03-Nov-2005 15:47

Thought so, i was just wondering if the springs etc are the same as in a normal clutch.

nelly 03-Nov-2005 16:08

Springs are the same.
The bolts are M5 x 20mm so the ones Antonye linked to would do just fine.

Antony,

Stainless steel in aluminium alloy is one of the worst material combinations possible for galvanic corrosion.

In the electro-chemical series, Al Alloy is anodic (negative potential), whilst stainless steel (and carbon) are cathodic (positive potential).
Unprotected Aluminium will suffer uniform corrosion as a result of galvanic action.
Protected Aluminium (anodised/painted) will be subject to deep pitting corrosion where scratches etc break the surface protection.

The worst combination is magnesium and carbon (assuming that gold and platinum are not used as structural materials!).

That said, I've got S/S bolts all over my bike...as long as there's no "electrolyte" (salt water for instance) then it's not a big deal.

The bolts screw into the clutch drum which is steel i think.

antonye 03-Nov-2005 17:17

The bolts screw into the posts which are part of the drum. The ones on my old JHP/STM slipper clutch were titanium (allegedly), but I would guess that most of them would be steel.

RickyX 03-Nov-2005 17:55

The basket is steel on a standard clutch, but I'll be a monkey's uncle if the posts aren't ally..that said, being a bloke it is obvious that I have been wrong before.
