Collecting my new bike

I'm due to pick up my 2003 2nd hand Monster 620 EI S (or is it IE S??) on Saturday afternoon from Ducati Aylesbury.

My daughter is giving me a lift but I would REALLY appreciate someone in the vicinity meeting me there and giving the bike the once over before I pay the balance.

Three reasons:

(1) I haven't seen it yet :o Just seen the pictures on the website and have test ridden about 6 bikes from there and now I'm basically trusting the salesman Steve to steer me in the right direction because I now know what I want.

(2) I've left any bartering a tad late as I have already paid a £600 deposit.

(3) I've asked for the next big service and new tyres but was told he would take a look, do the service but may not change the tyres. I don't want to be taken for a mug but I'm afraid, if the salesman is out to do that, I wouldn't know until someone points out to me that I have been.

Any chance of anyone giving her the once over for me before I sign the HP papers?

desmojen 03-Nov-2005 13:00

I might be popping over on saturday for some warranty work to be done on the ten, but I wouldn't be too concerned cos they've been pretty good to me.
Happy to be there for moral support if you want though babes :D

Maybe skids might be available too?

skidlids 03-Nov-2005 13:01

Ruth do you have a more accurate time for Saturday afternoon, if its early I should be able to get over Ducati Aylesbury.
I'm still learning my way around 620ie's but know a little bit ablou bikes.

Redruth 03-Nov-2005 13:03

Oh, thanks Jen. I'm planning to get there between 2.00 - 2.30. And if Skids is around, that would be perfect. Glad to hear you've had no problem with them though because another DSC member, naming no names, has put the wind up me with his comments, which is why I've put this post up.

A understatement of truly biblical proportions I might say.....

Result! I'm relying on Jo driving me but we may well get there sooner as she's a bit of a mad driver now that she has her Z4 :o

skidlids 03-Nov-2005 13:07

All ways more to learn John, I keep intending to sit back and study the Honda rear suspension one day to try and work out the pros and cons of their weird and wonderful system. I also now have a bit more to learn about Ohlins forks.
Obviously I'm on a power trip as it has been said that knowledge is power :D

skidlids 03-Nov-2005 13:09

I'll try and get over about 1:30 then Ruth
Nothing to do with good looking Blondes in Fast cars you understand :P

Harv748 03-Nov-2005 13:53

Your doing the absolute right thing Ruth.

I bought my first Duke a few years ago now (also from OYB) and, well to put it bluntly, got screwed by the salesman, who told me certain things had been done which later it was proved hadn't, and it ended up costing me a small fortune.

Nearly (but not quite:D) put me of Dukes for life. The point being that at the time I knew very little if anything about Dukes, and went over on my own and just got bowled over by the beauty of the bike. If I had been there with someone who new even the slightest about what they were looking at, they would have spotted the problems....and they could have been rectified.

I guess with Kev you have someone who knows his onions...just make sure he doesn't start 'removing' items for one of his DD projects:frog:;)

Enjoy the Bike:bouncy:

Redruth 03-Nov-2005 14:02

Thanks Skids. That would be brilliant. I'll see if I can get Jo to get me there nearer to 1.30. I'll tell her there's an admirer waiting, that should speed things up

;)

Harv, that's basically what happened with my 996, fell in love, no idea what I was buying other than she was fantastic to ride, looked and sounded superb, had been my dream bike from outset and the goal I planned to attain at some point in life. Still love her but would have benefited hugely from knowing more about what I was buying before I laid out £9K! :o:o:D

rockhopper 03-Nov-2005 14:09

I would say though Ruth that trying to do deals etc after the deposit has been paid is probably the wrong way round to be doing it.

Of course. But I'm not trying to 'do a deal', just want to make sue that when I go to collect the bike there isn't anything obviously wrong with it and that if the tyres are not satisfactory (and frankly even there I'm not entirely sure how to judge) or if it's making any funny noises, Skids will spot it in a flash whereas I would just hand over the money.

I'm not looking for a reduction in price. I'm looking to get what I'm paying for, which I have been assured will be 'a very good clean bike in excellent condition and by far the best one Steve has for the money I want to spend, and in fact the one Steve himself would buy if he was buying one'(does that all sound like used bike salesman speak and I'm just being too trusting :o:o)

Point is, I know I am probably paying over the odds but then it's a dealership selling it to me and when I want to chop it in I shall go back there and make them eat there words if they sell me a dud. Also, in case you haven't noticed, me and Timmy M are best mates now ;););) so Steve won't want to upset me.

Damn too late again!
Was going to ask Chris to pop down !
Butch

Redruth 03-Nov-2005 14:23

Sorry. Freudian Slip. Meant to type "just want to make SURE" not "SUE"

desmojen 03-Nov-2005 14:25

I'll see about getting there around 1.30 too.
Talks of good weather sat so I may just bring the animal under her own steam instead of in the van

Butch

Redruth 03-Nov-2005 14:27

Yes, just about to ... sorry. Will be burning the midnight oil as I have now frittered away an entire morning ... :sing::lol:

hogfisch 03-Nov-2005 21:22

I have actually had some dealings with Steve at OYB before. At the time I was looking at a 1999 900ss and was quite keen to take it for a test ride. I was on my M600 at the time and looking for a next step up.

I am pretty sure I would have paid the deposit that day if Steve could have been at all bothered to let me take the bike out. It was altogether too much trouble for him (battery might be flat etc.) with such short notice so he suggested I come back in a few days to give the mechanics time to do a once over before I could take it out.

Turn up a few days later - still hadn't done anything about it. Can I come back tomorrow? Obviously my money wasn't good enough. I went out and bought the 748 that weekend.

You have obviously had more luck than me in getting a test ride!

Redruth 05-Nov-2005 16:34

Picked up my lovely new (September '03) Monster 620S I.E. this afternoon from Ducati Aylesbury after Skids had given her a thorough check over. They seem to have been true to their word. She is in very good nick and nice and clean.

Thank you so much for coming over to do that for me, Kev, I now have complete peace of mind, whilst of course understanding that nothing you said is binding and you cannot be held responsible blah blah blah, just having you there to look over her to confirm she was OK was all I needed. And Jen too for the moral support. :D:D

And riding her home. Perfect! So effortless. Fast enough, smooth, you just sit back and go with the flow. Plenty of power for the winter riding and short trips out. I came back via Amersham and Chesham just to get onto the roads I liked the look of last week on the way to Beaconsfield but have never actually ridden on. No worries overtaking, a quick twist of the wrist and she's off and flying. Quite comfortable at higher speeds too because I'm not creating too much wind resistance if I hunker down over the tank. I already have every confidence in her. The Duchess is still the Duchess but this little beauty put a grin on my face all the way home.

Is it possible to adjust the clutch lever so that it's a bit closer? That's the only thing that felt slightly uncomfortable as it was a bit of a stretch letting the clutch out gently in first gear.

Managed with a bit of furniture shifting to get both bikes parked alongside each other and I am now a two Ducati family :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

skidlids 05-Nov-2005 16:44

Hi Ruth just got back in myself. I'm happy to have helped and thank Jo for the cup of tea.
The clutch lever isn't really adjustable as the screw in the end is for just setting a bit of slack. It is possible to fit adjustable levers off a early 748/916, new pattern parts levers are about £30 a pair. We put them on Senna3's ST2 a couple of years ago and thety worked well.
Good to hear you enjoyed riding the 620 home.
I bet next time I see it its not going to be as clean as it was today.

Redruth 05-Nov-2005 17:05

I think we know you'll win that bet Skids :lol:

I'll take her out again tomorrow and see whether the clutch feels a bit better. Partly unfamiliarity, no doubt but I used to get tendonitis from my Daytona because the clutch was too big a spread for me, only to discover just before I sold her that it was adjustable.

What does "new pattern parts" mean? Whatever it is, if it works it's got to be worth £30.

Jo is bursting to have a go on the back so I'll tell her tomorrow when I take her out for a ride that you appreciated the tea :D:D:D

ericthered40 05-Nov-2005 17:22

glad she was a good un :D

Glyn 05-Nov-2005 20:45

well done ruth can't wait to see you out on her:)

I think skids means these.

I think I'm right in saying that the top one on the list (12mm hole) is the one that fits the early 748's and Monsters. The small hole ones are for my bike.

I'm sure someone can confirm this.

Always nice to see you Ruth, and she is a little beauty!
Skids and I did say after you'd gone that she won't stay like that for long! :)
Sorry I was a bit late, got carried away in asda! :D

Oh yeah, I had a little accident in the shop when you'd all gone, a new Arai fell in my hand and came home with me! :rolleye::D

:lol::lol::lol: What colour?

It's such a poo day! Much as I want to, I can't bring myself to take the bike out at the moment. Why not? Because she'll get DIRTY! And she's so lovely and clean - she's going to realise she's come to a really bad home and she'll hate me, as her previous owner was obviously such a stickler for cleanliness. She's probably gone into shock already, having sat next to the Duchess for the last 18 hours. :o:o

I may have to buy a third bike that can live outside (no room left in the garage unless I move my desk out) that I can ride on days like this when it's too mucky to ride a clean Ducati. :o:o:o

desmojen 06-Nov-2005 13:37

Colin Edwards rep Corsair. They had it reduced to £299 already when I had a supremely cheeky moment and offered them £250. Imagine my surprise when they agreed!!
How can you say no to that :bouncy:

Ducati's don't mind the rain and cold as long as you care for them, my 750SS was half faired and I ride her right through winter................but I did clean her after every ride! :frog:

Meant to say thanks for that link Moto748. Presumably you'd have to buy the clutch and gear lever so that they match - although it has just occurred to me that I could bring a whole new meaning to the word 'customised' with this new bike - something to compete with AK's baby, maybe :devil:

Redruth 06-Nov-2005 15:36

but I did clean her after every ride! :frog: [/quote]

:o:o:o:o:o

I think you're a bit too late with that helmet, Jen. You've clearly already suffered a severe blow to your head :P

andyb 06-Nov-2005 15:36

Hey Ruth, seen the link in the for sale ( spareshack) to all those available monster carbon bits......................:eureka::devil:

[Edited on 6-11-2005 by andyb]

Redruth 06-Nov-2005 15:41

Andy, I already have some carbon on this bike. It looks very posh, actually. I'm thinking of asking for another digital camera for my birthday so that I can share my photos with y'all. Looking at her now, I'm not sure about the mirrors. Think I might be shopping around for some different ones. These are the round ones that look like the bats those aeroplane directors use on the run way. Give a very good view (when properly adjusted) ;)

By the way, I'm doing a bike safe course on 2nd December, starting at the Ace Cafe. Glad to have this bike in time for that mind, otherwise I'd have been riding the M.D. on those flippin slippery tyres :o

skidlids 06-Nov-2005 18:56

Yep it'll be the 12mm holed ones required, but I would go for a brake one to match the clutch one Ruth, not a gear lever. Haven't we taught you anything yet :P

:lol::lol::lol::lol: I'm having a blond day, sorry!!!

Just got back from a memorial service so you comment put a smile back on my face. Cheers :D

Although, now that you mention it, with your mechanical skills and my brilliant ideas, couldn't we invent a bike that turns traditional things like foot operated gear levers on its head ... if we could just think of a good reason to re-invent what appears to be a reasonably successful method of changing gear.

Or shall I just open another bottle of red and relax
