Difference between 749 models? Hello all. Brand new here bar three posts! Im tempted by a 2005 749 for £7999. What is the difference between the 4 models of 749? Am i right in thinking the dark is stripped down a bit (dont know how though),the 749 standard, the other two not altogether sure? How easy would it be to turn the 749 into an S? Apologies if this is a silly question. Nick |
Welcome :) 749 Dark - matt paint, no steering damper, Sachs rear shock, Showa forks, old style swingarm, only available in Biposto 749 - gloss paint, steering damper, same suspension as Dark, new style swingarm, only available in Biposto 749S - hotter motor, Showa rear shock, Showa forks with Titanium Nitride, new style swingarm, available in Biposto and Monoposto 749R - very hot motor, Ohlins suspension all round, Ohlins steering damper, radial Brembos, new style swingarm, a few carbon and magnesium bits ('04 model has full carbon fairing), only available in Monoposto Turning the 749 into an S would need a change in forks, rear shock and engine strip. Not worth it - you may as well buy an S in the first place. There's not a huge difference between the two anyway. I bought a 749S as I wanted the uprated suspension over the base model. The engine difference is minimal so I wouldn't buy an S on that basis alone. If you buy the 749, and you're that bothered, I'd get the fork internals changed and stick an Ohlins rear shock on it and get it set up to suit you. [Edited on 4-11-2005 by Twinfan] |
id agree with Twinfan /ian |

Don't for get the s has an alloy rear sub frame and adjustable footrest hangers. As said above not worth buying a bip and trying to transform it. I traded in an 888 for a 749s and the difference is unbelievable. The looks grow on you too. Iwould go for a second hand bike as most have done a few summer miles and will have had some carbon thrown at them. for some reason and you may not agree I think the build quality is better on the 1st 03 models. |
Have a look at Auto Trader now as there are big discounts on 05 749S but with silver frame, not red but with 05 swinging arm etc. Told by more than one dealer that these are heavily discounted models to clear old frames etc. Cost £7999 vs £9700 for std 749s. Other on the site are advertising 05 models but are 04 unregistered so be careful to get the new swinger. |
Ducati Aylesbury has these (i think) advertised as the 749 special. Unfortunately i cant link directly to it. Does this have the new swingarm. Says its an 05 spec bike? Thanks. |
The dark is available as a monoposto ,there is also an 06 nero (749s mono black frame ,paint and wheels with white number boards). The "specials" are 05 mdels in every way apart from silver frames, most dealers have them at £7395 ish. butch |
Thanks Butch. Its not an 'S' though is it? |
you tried motorapido ? they,ve got a piece in mcn about these 05 silver frame jobbies , butch,s price is about the right mark ace |

Cool. Cheers. |
The silver frame versions look like 04 frames and I noticed the cam belt covers are also the thinner 04 version suggesting they couldnt get the 05 cover to fit, the bodywork and swingarm are 05, weird but still a good buy |

Cant speak for the 05 model, but the 04 model had Showa forks, but not nitrided. However the 749 is available as a mono, they are just rare a rocking horse ****. The mono tail unit does not have a number board. see ma pic to the left |
Nick. am new to this forum, but will give you an idea of the deal I have just made with Daytona, Ruislip...bear in mind this is a brand new 2005 749 in red, not the hybrid from Aylesbury, but the 2005 red frame...now I paid less than the Aylesbury price for their hybrids of £7,999, and even less than £7,500...you need to go down and see Chris...mention me...Jo...he will cringe but he is a good guy and will look after you...dont settle for a half breed...the resale value, I would have thought, will be much less than a thoroughbred 2005. Daytona's number is 01895675511...good luck  |

Talking of resale values, the dealers are not doing any of us any favours by discounting so heavily. If they must do so, perhaps we could help ourselves by using U2U |
749er - I was talking about the '05 bike. You can't get an '05 Mono in the base 749. Only S and R models are available in Monoposto format. |
I cannot imagine any other dealer having a brand new 05 model749 bip with the red frame for sale at £6795 like my local dealer has !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocking |

wasn't sure about the 05 model, hence the reference to the 04 model. Bit of a shame that. I am not that keen on the larger fairings on the 05's dont know what the general concensus amongst everyone else is. |

Just checked my dealer 05 model £5500, AND paddock stand AND 10 years free servicing AND your breakfast in bed every day, from Kirsty Gallagher and its all transferable:devil: |
I'm with you mate - new fairing is a bit minging to to me. Best buy is/was the '04 749S Mono. Just like I have :D Yellow is being discontinued for '06 in favour of black... |

Quick Poll. Who's red, yellow, black or what colour do you fancy? Two tone not allowed G |
04 749S Red is the best cause thats what I have got:bouncy::roll::D |
I've got an '03 749s bip, red with silver frame and wheels. I reckon the '05 749s with red frame and black wheels would be the 'mutts nuts'. That or gloss black like the 999 Nero. |
def red...but kinda like the yella too  |
05 ,red , red frame , black wheels , |
04 749S Red is the best cause thats what I have got ok cut and paste but true |
999S all the way, give me power, and then some more power, and the 04 for the looks, :flame::burn::burn: |
Nick If you really want a bargin, my 749 dark is up for sale ( see for sale section ) it's better than new ( 1200 miles but with extras ) and at a very tempting price:D |
