Tools.............. I recently purchased a 748s 2001my I need to stop up on the boggo tools I need so please advise - 1.does anyone know the nut sizes for removal of the rear wheel - I intend to buy 1/2" drive sockets 2.is there a specific tool / size for adjusting the eccentric hub? 3.what size torx? screwdriver / socket is needed to remove the screen? Has anyone found / caused any electrical / alarm problems by wiring a =ve and -ve wire onto the top terminals so as to allow a plug in of a battery conditioner? Its currently on standard dragon evo (corses?) - what road tyre pressure is everyone using? Thanks in advance Nick |
1: 46mm wheel nut side/ 41 mm sprocket side/ 28mm front wheel 2: The tool for the hub should be in the tool kit...looks lke a large C spanner with a box section piece for the handle. 3: Torx 7 I think? 4: No problem with connecting up a charger to the battery...have optimate terminals on mine. 5: Tyre pressures are a personal thing...but 36 psi front and rear will put you close. Theres a great post by shazzam somewhere on here about tyre pressures and working them out to suit your riding style. Try a search on it. HtH |
Thanks Harv Thought that big nut looked big! If it is torx bits on the front i will just get a little set or something |
Sorry just one other thing - there is a tie wrap on the wheel nut but no mention in the haynes manual - is this needed? |
Peace of mind really...you don't need one but you'll be suprised at the number of bikes that have them on! |
You'll also be surprised at the number of Torx tool kits that don't contain a T7 tool! You'll need to hunt for it specifically, I lucked out and found one at the BMF show this year. It was the last one too ... |
cheers both of you - probably saved me a few quid on a (useless!) torx bit set!:pig: |

Is this in effect to hold on the circlip then ? |
Halfords do a spanking little socket set in their Professional range that has all the tork bits as well. I think it was around 25 squid and comes in a little box etc. Always goes with me on track days. As for the tie wrap, lockwire will do the same. Good idea, but not strictly neccesary - that said I never go out without!!! If you don't know how to "do" lockwire, drop me a line and I'll give you the benefit of years of RAF experience |
T6 i'm sure |
You may find that most of the sockets for the rear wheel nuts are 3/4" drive, so you'll need a 1/2" adapter. I'd never go without securing the clips on the nuts with a tie or lockwire. They do come off and the nuts can come loose!! The screen screws are T7. Really obscure size. There's usually some drivers on eBay, or you can get them from RS or other electrical suppliers. |
Never mind all that! Just check yer rectifier wiring! |
A 46mm socket and 1/2" adapter is expensive,unless you have a 3/4" torque wrench.Halfords sell a 1 13/16 "hub"socket in 1/2" thats alot cheaper,worked for me. |
I bought a T7 from Maplins and it did not fit it just spun inside the fastner and mashed it. I bought one on e bay for £5 and although it claimed to be the same size it works a treat. But do check your rectifier wiring mine has thrown it's hand in 2,000 miles after I bought it. I am now trying to get it sorted for Cadwell this weekend. |
please expand re rectfier - thought it was changed in my2000? |
The problem still exists with the wiring from the cover on the other side (where the stator is) to the regulator connecting block (the white connector behind the metal back plate). The wire used essentially is not upto carrying the maximum loads experienced, and as a result, over time it/the covering degrades causing problems that oftenm go unseen. Check the connecting block (with the two yelow wires going into it), take it apart and look inside of it, and then check the wiring that goes from it back across the bike to the other side of the engine casing. It may look OK, but many people cut this wiring out and replace it with thicker guage stuff, and better 30A connectors. Makes sense to do it as a bit of insurance, and isn't a big deal |
Pirelli tyre pressures - I run 32psi front (2.2 bar) and 36psi rear (2.4 bar) on Diablo Corsas as recommended by Pirelli. Giles |
Re: The 46mm nut for the rear wheel. This can be a bitch to undo. I have broken 2 ratchets, 2 tommy bars and 2 standard 1/2 inch breaker bars trying this. Get a good 1/2 inch breaker bar at least 2 foot long (I bought a 3/4 inch monster), and always grease the threads thoroughly when re-installing. Spinoli |

Wow! grazed knuckles i guess then! |

Or just take the socket and your bike to your nearest tyre dealer and get them to just loosen it with an air gun, then just nip it back up and pootle home.;) |
i got a large socket set of ebay for £25 which works a treat for me tyre pressure for me is 31/32 and 31/30 on the track |
