2006 Thunderbike series proposal? |
Quote:
Unless it's a watercooled Ducati............ |

Yeh-bloody typical, gives the rules: Thunderbike Class displacement limits are absolute and are set as follows: THUNDERBIKE Single cylinder, Unlimited displacement Twin cylinder, air cooled, Unlimited displacement Twin cylinder, liquid cooled, 3 or less valves per cylinder, Unlimited displacement Twin cylinder, liquid cooled, 4 valve per cylinder, up to 750cc Three cylinder, non-fuel injected, up to 1200cc Four cylinder, air-cooled, up to 1200cc Four cylinder, liquid cooled, 1990 to 1992 model year, up to 650cc Four cylinder, liquid cooled (oil or water), pre-1990 model year, up to 860cc All air-cooled, 2-valve, unlimited displacement And then specifically excludes 748 and 749 Ducati's-do you think he is worried about his beloved Buells being thrashed???:lol::lol: John |
Definately:mad: |
Maybe we should bite the bullet as a club and run our own Thunderbikes series alongside the Desmodue boys??? |
Hmmmm.... ST2 racing anybody? Or ST3 racing? What about a 900, 944 or 1000 SS? They should all make the criteria and meet their low power to weight ratio requirements |
G'orn Jools - I'll come & support you mate:D C:) |
How about Blu Duke racing :D |

1000cc air-cooled two valvers with a horsepower limit of 100 on sticky rubber. Where do I sign? |

My thoughts exactly when I first read about it, but Bloo Duke is too powerful. They've got a maximum power to weight ratio limit, so the bike has to weigh at least 4 pounds per horsepower. The maximum power any bike can have is listed as: 125 kg 68.91 hp 130 kg 71.66 hp 135 kg 74.42 hp 140 kg 77.18 hp 145 kg 79.93 hp 150 kg 82.69 hp 155 kg 85.44 hp 160 kg 88.20 hp 165 kg 90.96 hp 170 kg 93.71 hp 175 kg 96.47 hp So, Bloo Duke at 175kg and 101 bhp would have to be detuned slightly or be excluded. A standard 1000 SS at Ducati's quoted figures of 180 Kg and 95 Bhp would be pretty much on the money wouldn't you think? [Edited on 9-11-2005 by Jools] |
well, you're not nicking 'Her Majesty', as popping out 98hp with her 1000 twin spark engine:P:P |

I was thinking more an SS ... but if you were going to sponsor me ;) I meant to say UP TO 1000cc air-cooled, two valve twins with a horsepower limit of 100 and a minimum weight of 160kg's on supercorsa's and wets. Now THAT would make me a very keen person indeed! :D |
well.....she is run in quite nicely now...and AK will have the bits needed to go on track - from the amount of spares Tango brought with her..... But we have 2 of the 4 Ducati's going on track already - and then I wouldnt have a road bike:( |

So buy yourself the new 1000cc S2R thingy :D Everyone's a winner! |

Having ridden my 620SS and loved every minute of it I can only imagine how good a 1000 with proper sticky tyres would be, I am so tempted LOL ! |
Quote:
The more I think about it the more I think it would be an excellent series! I'd be way keen to enter this! Lets start it Tony :D |
LOL I am not allowed to spend any more on bikes this year...........altho I have found a mint 2003 900SS very very cheap, I was gonna just build a trackday bike that looks identical to my 620 but with 100hp.....bugger must step away from the bike trader.... |

That's ok, the year is nearly over. Only a month and a half and you can start shopping again! Nelly got 100 horespower out of Blueduke and I think it would be even easier out of a dual spark 1000cc engine. I think John Hackett has already done it, and Neil Spalding from Sigma Performance has some plans in that direction as well. If you like the idea of that, take a look at this bike! More here I'd really like one of those .... mmmmmm |
the 1000ds engine puts out about 94/95 hp stock. comparison here for 2005 models (M1000sie & SS1000) http://www.ducati.com/bikes/my2005/c...son&x=105&y=10 HTIOH? C:) |
I tried to resist but it's completely irresistable! Here's a gratuitous pic of the NCR - damn it's GORGEOUS! ![]() |
Will you stop it....altho you do have a point next years budget is only 6 weeks away LOL ;) ;) |
The series for all Ducati's already exists - it's called Sound Of Thunder and it contains everything from single cylinder Rotax engined 650's to full blown ex works RS's, so why create another? if you really want to race your Ducati come and join in the fun and stop making excuses! If anyone is interested in finding out more about the class and the very broad range of machine and rider ability in it feel free to drop me an email or u2u for contact no. |
And if you go along to North Glos race club you will find Minitwins on the same grid as the SoTs, not that I would fancy my chances against SoT bikes around Thruxton but give me Pembrey and there is the odd SoT bike I would be trying to beat, same goes for Cadwell. Hopefully see you at a couple next rounds next year Garry. The 750SS is now in my hands and prep towards 2005 Mintwins regs has started. [Edited on 22-11-2005 by skidlids] |
TP maybe this will do you http://www.kaemna.de/cms_en/tu_example.htm?&ct=2 |
Looks good Skids. The only thing with sound of thunder is that an air-cooled two-valve machine is not even remotely in the same league as one of the 4-valve RS's or similar that seem to be all over the place. In Thunderbikes the 1000DS engine would be competitive, the rest is down to the rider. Your 750 idea has merit though Kev, it's a cheap way of getting a half decent bike into minitwins. I think that it's pretty much the same sort of bhp numbers with maybe slightly more torque than a well setup 620 though. Not that I've just been researching this ;) Have you checked out the ECU yet? Can you change the maps in the standard ECU so you can run open cans and some tuning? |
Quote:
I think the answer here is yes. With 1999 750ss I don't think you actually could change the ECU, but I was running the SIL Carbon cans and I _think_ it was remapped by Nelly. Probably best ask him what he did :-) |
Tp if I used a ie model I could change the maps, FIM do the software, after looking at the power graphs on the Moto-one website there is not huge amounts to be gained by spending twice as much on a later ie model., Although the current Minitwin regs allow me to fit bits from the newer model so I could fit fuel injection if I wanted, not sure on what gearbox a 750SSie has but I will soon find out when my free one turns up and if its a 6 speed I can use that. To start with I want the bike to feel and handle just like my 600SS DD bike, but with 12-13bhp more and a heap load of torque more, which as you say is a bit more than a sorted 620. Add to that Minitwins can use sticky tyres, warmers and wets when necessary, (I prefer to avoid slicks as they can't be reused for the road, which is a bit of a handicap if I run the 996 in SoT) I put a costing together earlier and I am on course for £1500 for a bike with Ohlins fork spings, steering damper, Hi levels pipes, rearsets and a 900SSie shock for now. |
Yes, FIM do the software and have maps available. The 750SS has a 5 speed box ... 61 horsepower quoted by Ducati as standard, you won't get near the class 72 horsepower limit with a 750SS without doing naughty stuff and spending a lot more money than you'd be looking to spend I'd imagine. If you wanted the horsepower and torque you'd be better off getting the 800 but if you wanted a budget racer more suited to the class ... well you're doing that. Especially if it's free!!! I'm back to the 800SS/minitwin versus 1000SS/thunderbikes debate I've been having in my head, assuming thunderbikes goes ahead. It's all a long way away anyway, as I'm in DD next year and wouldn't have the money to start sorting another bike until at least half way through next year I'd imagine! |
72bhp may be the class limit and at MRO you will probably find most bikes are up around there, but at a lot of North Glos rounds there are probably a few that aren't (excluding Thruxton, Silverstone & Donny as they attract the MRO guys) especially at Pembrey where speed around the Woodlands Kink and Honda Curve really help your lap times. Jim at Bike Enders just sold a 1000 Twinspark monster for £2k, ready to ride away, would have been a good base for a Thunderbike But a budget Minitwin will do me, I learnt a lot from racing my 583 against 675s and 620s last year and having to chase faster bikes makes you try that bit harder. That and I can't spend all my money on racing as I have my road bikes to consider. |
Gissa go when you've finished building her Skids? :D |
Just noticed I still pop up on the NG roadracing index page every so often as does Garry Smith and like Garry its a pic of me doing SoT on my 916 Strada http://www.ngroadracing.org/index_page_pics/36.jpg |
