Which oil? Hi folks I had a blast at Brands on the 27th! My 620 class A now-a-track bike is something else. Never ridden a ducati before and I really should have done. We all get there in the end. I changed the oil and filter beforehand but am looking at 4 days in Almeria with Tracksense at the end of October so obviously, its going to get changed again before I go. The question is - what oil should I be using? Brand, weight, type and reasoning would be nice. Hiflo provide the filters. Thanks all. David |
I use Motul 300V in my DD bike, its expensive but its good. You may get 10 different answers from 10 different peeps tho'. |
Great to meet you yesterday David, glad you had a good time and enjoyed the day. I don't think the weather could have been any better and the trackday was nicely full but not crowded so plenty of track time. When we first started DD nearly 10 years ago, we got some oil from Shell as sponsorship. I used to run their Advance 10w40 Fully Synth in my Class A bike but suffered from quite a bit of clutch slip. Switching to the Advance 10w40 Semi-Synth made this go away! I think it's pretty much down to personal preference as to what you run, and as Ghost says you'll probably get ten different answers. I've found that buying oil from ebay has been cheapest - Busters/M&P do some great deals on 4L oil packs but beware that some sellers are offering older oil at discount prices - the Shell Advance bottles have changed from navy plastic to grey/silver plastic and have had the labels updated to match so you can tell the difference. I'm not sure how storage would affect the oil but it's worth bearing in mind. |
after a rebuild I had last year I was told that the oil I had been using was no good,,,, (shell advanced synthetic 10/40) and had caused damage. I don't really know if this was really a direct result of the oil and I am the only person I know who has had this problem, I was advised to use putoline 15/50 synthetic, since then Parkinsons also told me they only use putoline 15/50 and I have used it ever since, hopefully without causing any damage inside,, which I can't see... yet... and, Nice to meet you on Saturday. matt, did you say you weren't doing the brands meeting? |
I use Rock Oil. 10w 40 semi synthetic. No problems at all. It made in Warrington or Cheshire, so helping the Uk economy too! |
that's 4 people with 4 different answers..... ? good luck. |
I use 15/50 Motul 300V fully synthetic - really good stuff! |
Silkolene Comp 4 for me if I'm paying and its for a twin, Pro 4 when i raced in-line 4s Used Pro4 in R6 and ZXR400 at the TT in my CBR600s, CBR900 on the short circuits, Comp4 in my TL and in my 916, 996, 998 and 998R, also use it in my DD bikes and my road going S2R 800 and M1100 Preferred grade is 15W50 for the Ducatis and 10W40 for the Jap bikes |
I used silkolene comp 4 15/50 in mine and had really bad clutch slipping. Changed it for 10/40 semi and its fine now. |

i've never had any clutch slip regardless of what oil in either my class b or class a bikes. never used silkolene comp 4 15/50 though. |
I'm quite liking your little picture 007, ,,, are those violins? |
So all in all, semi synth 15/50 seems to be the way to go! Then i shall go and buy some. Thanks all David |
Autolube 15/40 semi in the badger, supposed to be re-badged Shell and it's better than that Anne Summers stuff but don't taste as nice. |

I found 3 and a bit litres of Ann Summers autolube bloody expensive :D |

Makes back fires smell nicer tho! :p |
Work Shop manual for the 620 states 10w 40 Semi Synth. |

my back fires smell bad.. |

Take no notice of the work shop manual, for racing an air cooled motor you need a 50 grade as they get much hotter than a road bike Roc 15/50 semi is the way to go. |
Having perused the Opie oils website, i've decided on 15/50 Mobil racing 4T. It's fully synthetic though. I'm going to put the same stuff into my Triumph Sprint because virtually everything else makes the gear change clunky when it heats up. Wish me luck! Thanks for all your input. David |

And after two pages of recommendations, I still don't know what that is! Semi synth is ever popular but not everyone says so. I'm looking at 4 days in almeria this November and one wouldn't want to go with the wrong oil in the 'box, would one???? Dih |

I used that for a year, no problem with clutch slip, or anything else. |
This thread prompted me to do a quick google search on what the numbers mean 42 years old and i now know what multigrade is all about  |
One sensible suggestion i can add to the thread is flush the gearbox and clean the clutch plates of all the old oil .. some oils don't mix well and might explain the clutch slip problem |
Change of plan. The mobil 1 has gone into my Sprint ST and i've got some Rockoil Synthesis 4 racing for the Monster. We shall see... David |
