bodywork

Im confussed to know if there is some low budget ducati tactics

i noticed on my bike (yellow) where the body work has rubbed its red underneath do ducati mold all there plastic red then spray them yellow?????

has any one else noticed this or is it just my bike it states in the log book its a yellow bike ??????????

can ducati be budget enuff to do this

(ford mondeo and jaguar Xtype spring to mind)

LesPaul 18-Nov-2005 16:52

All Ducati's are made Red then they are road tested and the slow ones get a top coat of Yellow

Darren

dave996 18-Nov-2005 16:54

not sure but it could be the primer.

and now you've opened yourself up for all the jokes:lol:

underneath every yellow bike there's a red one trying to escape:devil:

JPM 18-Nov-2005 17:00

I'm sure all of them are painted red initially then repainted yellow when required..

Jools 18-Nov-2005 17:02

If it's a 748, it's not a new bike, so have you had it from new or did you get it secondhand?

It's not impossible that if it's secondhand someone has bought a red replacement panel off eBay or something and had it sprayed up.

As far as I knew most Ducati undercoat is white

Paul748bp 18-Nov-2005 17:06

the rear seat under where it rubs on bits is mat red and on the side panels its second hand bike and states yellow on the dealers book im sure it will be stamped on the vim plate
ill look when i get in

ps

yellow is the true colour for 748's plus red is bland:frog:

keefer 18-Nov-2005 17:26

the plastic is moulded in red. yes

Paul748bp 18-Nov-2005 17:28

pheeeeeeeeeeeeeew

bloody cheap skate ducati's

keefer 18-Nov-2005 17:34

that's not to say it may of been sprayed at some point though.
normally takes quite a bit of rubbing to reveal it. like a crash
see below

LesPaul 18-Nov-2005 17:35

In all seriousness I think you'll find its normal, I had a yellow 748R from new, not sure how but it got a small scratch near the side stand and you could see red peaking through.
I blamed the colour for it being slow but now I have a slow red one so it must be the common denominator, me

Darren

Paul748bp 18-Nov-2005 17:39

the red can only be seen when i lift the seat unit and i get the usal jap banter boys slating it as being crashed and repainted

(muppets)

NO class

Paul

Check the part numbers moulded into the panels, the reds and yellows have different part numbers.Get the parts manual PDF from the ducati site and cross reference. Yellow should be on white primer, in my experience I have never seen a genuine yellow panel over red, sounds like they have been resprayed.List the part numbers and I will tell you if its a genuine yellow or resprayed red.

keefer 18-Nov-2005 17:50

they are different numbers because they are different colours.
when you buy a panel from ducati it doesn't come plain so you can paint it

ducasa1 18-Nov-2005 18:11

"they are different numbers because they are different colours".Thats basically what i have said, so the theory that all panels are reds or begin as red is incorrect.
I think Ducati did it occassionally at the end of production runs though, if the story I heard from a Ducati dealer is true (taken with a pinch of salt).
Ducati do supply a plain panel though, but again different part number. The part number will tell all

Long live Yellow Ducatis, the best colour by far.

For example rear seat for 748s
Part number 483.2.019.2PG Rear fairing (GREY)
483.2.019.1AA Rear fairing (RED)
483.2.019.2AB Rear fairing (YELLOW)
This follows on for 748 996 998 998s panels, so I assume all Ducati panels.
So back to original enquiry I am 99% certain your panels Paul are resprayed (not by Ducati though!)

ducasa1 18-Nov-2005 18:33

scuse spelling

Paul748bp 18-Nov-2005 18:35

but this would indicate the whole bike has been done why would any one go to that length and surly when the bike was bought new from onyourbike back in 1999 it says in the log book for it colour-yellow ???

im so confussed :puzzled:

keefer 18-Nov-2005 18:41

don't be.
as already said all panels were made in red plastic then sprayed to the required colour

Paul748bp 18-Nov-2005 18:56

right the near side panal code is
480.1.042.1A

and the front nose is

481.1.012.1a

both have italian writing on them saying

ALIMONTE 35

hear also is my seat arrowed with the red bits showing

ducasa1 18-Nov-2005 18:56

Its easy enough to add change of colour on log book (via DVLA). I have just looked at 2 redundant seat unit mono and biposto
First is a originally red (factory original) resprayed black and is showing white plastic where the termis have rubbed 3 mm gauges into the plastic.
Second a yellow mono is also showing white (not primer) where it is distressed. These are late panels 2002 and 2003 maybe in different panels or earlier models they were red plastic
I am not saying keefer is incorrect maybe they do make red plastic panels and respray them yellow but not in my experience

ducasa1 18-Nov-2005 19:00

Maybe keefers is right, because I think a 1a is factory yellow.
But none of my yellow panels are showing any hint of red, maybe I need a lump hammer and chisel

keefer 18-Nov-2005 19:03

I would say that its original yellow. underneath certainly.
if you go back and look at the picture of the yellow 748SP I put up, all the broken parts reveal red all the way though the plastic especially on the top fairing.
perhaps now they do make them in a different colour.
I have been unfortunate enough to see quite a few broken panels and they have all been red all the way through

ducasa1 18-Nov-2005 19:05

Just looked at my mono, its worn on exactly the same place, but is showing clear plastic under white primer.
Im going to check on your part number

Clippy 18-Nov-2005 19:16

I bought a 748BP new from OYB in 1999 and it wore through red in exactly the same place under the seat unit...

...in fact, you may have my old bike...

Reg No doesn't start S611 does it?

Giles

ducasa1 18-Nov-2005 19:21

Paul need the seat number

From the evidence so far, I conclude that Ducati used to re spray red panels yellow (cheapskates) but not on the later bikes, well not on my yellow 998s panels anyway.
Or maybe they did it at the end of production runs (as quoted by a Ducati dealer to me), remember they were often cash strapped and used to cobble bikes together.
And Paul you are probably none the wiser. If you find out more from this saga let me know because I’m confused now

Paul748bp 18-Nov-2005 19:34

i cant seem to find the number on the seat ???????

and my reg is S407

sorry :(

the panels all look ducati done it would seem odd that the previous owner would spend X amount on respraying the whole bike and have to get the tank done it would be more to just get new panels

ducasa1 18-Nov-2005 19:42

Your nose cone is 1A which is a factory unpainted should be a BB for yellow.
From what I can see Ducati only supplied a unpainted seat for the 748 Bi posto in that year (should end in 3A), so I think all your panels are factory unpainted.

nelly 18-Nov-2005 19:51

It's very normal. Don't worry about it. The panels are moulded with a red "resin". The paint is then applied to finish the panel.
Even black ones are red underneath..............
