750ssie, don\'t like the cold?

Ok I'm a bit worried about the bike at mo. It's a 2000 750ssie, with Scorpion Race cans fitted (straight through) and a power commander. Now I've only had the bike 4 weeks and the power commander has never been set up correctly (one of those "I mean to do later jobs"), mind a near flat batt can't help, that may explain the low idle speed. The last owner said the bike also has a K & N filter too, the airbox is still in one piece also.

Now today I set off for work and it seems to lose throttle response at around 7-8000 revs? It's like when your bike is starting to run low on fuel and it stutters. It did this all through the higher gears and would only run right in very high revs or lower? What the hell is going on? Now I've taken the day off work and I wanna get it sorted so:

- Any ideas on the prob?
- Where can I get the best map for the power commander (sorry this is the first bike I've had with one of these and I'm lost)
- Should I be mentally worried?!

It is weird though because on friday night I rode all thw way to Liverpool and back the next morning (about 350mile round trip) and no probs? I need the bike for work so any help would be great,

Cheers,

Diehard :D

May be worth changing the fuel filter
Other than that it may need a richer map in the Power Commander especially if it has as you say a K&N fitted as well as the open pipes.

diehard 21-Nov-2005 09:15

It has always felt... Slow I must admit, I have only ever seen 110 on the clock, surly it will go faster than that?

skidlids 21-Nov-2005 09:17

Surely should go faster than that, whats the mileage
check out www.moto-one.com for performance info

diehard 21-Nov-2005 09:21

Cheers for that, checking now. You get my mail btw? And it's 11,300 (was 10,000 when I got her) full service history too.

By mail depends if you mean the U2U, I emailed pics to the Lycos email address you gave me.

Best I give the full link as that shorter one goes somewhere else
http://www.moto-one.com.au/performance/index.html

After reading about the 750 carb Vs inj I may stick with the carb version and try and get it up to 65 ish bhp, Only just got it and haven't had it running yet so be a while yet before I have it fettled as I want.

diehard 21-Nov-2005 10:00

I sent you a mail back to your email addy as I got your pics. Asking about price n such like. My email is dodgy though!

Just been looking at the power commander website, it seems that with the K & N filter fitted and after-market cans, no airbox lid is needed? Anyone confirm. Also does anyone have a spacific map for the Scorpion Exhausts + PC fitted?

My 2000 750SSie peaked at 125Mph down a big hill on the M40 on the way to Oxford.

On a flatish road, 110-115Mph is probably the best you're going to get. (Although it probably depends on the power to weight ratio as well!)

diehard 21-Nov-2005 10:34

I'm a big git so that probs explains it! :D But still doesnt solve my porb of getting it set up right...

Yeah I'm around the 95-100kg mark myself.

I can't comment too much on your particular setup, but my 750ss hated the cold. I used to park it outside, but under a cover. Leave it for anymore than a week in winter and you had no chance of starting it. Even after 3 or 4 days of no riding it was a lottery as to whether it kicked over or not. *shrug* I just learned to roll start it quite a lot - warms you right up on cold winter mornings, although ice on the road can be a bit tricky.

diehard 21-Nov-2005 17:29

Erm... This is the bike running on idle (little choke):

diehard 21-Nov-2005 17:31

And a close up, I'm sure it ain't ment to be like that!

diehard 21-Nov-2005 19:16

Ok I have checked the fuel filter, and ran the bike and the bubbles were comming off the 'sack thing' like made (hope thats normal). And I also took the power commander off and tried to run the bike and it was slightly worse.

I then tried the commander and it was no better than before. I don't get it. When the bike idles the light stays on the first bar of the lean possition (as in pics) with no change.

So I'm stuck, when I pull the throttle back to fast it dies like lack of fuel, if I take it easy, it's ok until I get into top revs and it starts to die again. Any ideas? I need to fix this tonight for work tomorrow!

skidlids 21-Nov-2005 19:45

can you not use the low button to richen up that idle setting looks far to weak to me

diehard 21-Nov-2005 19:46

I just sent you a U2U mate, sorry, didn't see your post. I press all sorts of buttons when the bike is running and not running and it doesn't do zip, but I still have the probs (slightly worse) without the PC?

skidlids 21-Nov-2005 19:55

You say you truied the PC website
But maybe this users map is worth a try
http://www.powercommander.com/usermap701.shtml

diehard 21-Nov-2005 20:01

Well I have just tried programming the power commander on the bike and nothing happend at all and I followed it to the letter. I wonder if it's fooked? Or maby it doesnt have a map on it at all... Can it loose it's memory with a low battery on the bike? Just waiting for my mate to bring me my cables n book round so I can plug it into me comp...

diehard 21-Nov-2005 21:07

Well I think me power commander is not working and even without it fitted the problem is exactly the same. Pull the throttle back too quick and it dies, even when idleing. I think I'm just gonna have to give it up and get it into a garage.

Some sujestions I have had are, throttle posistioning sensor, the coils and plugs. But I don't know, injection bikes are new to me, I want carbs back!

skidlids 21-Nov-2005 21:11

Is it the right power commander I think its a 701 they do for the 1999 model and a 702 for the 2000 - 2001 model

diehard 21-Nov-2005 21:15

Just had a quick shifty at the back of the device and it says K701 - something something, so 701 it is. Mind the bike was running 'ok' (if not very lumpy and never idleing) before today.

skidlids 22-Nov-2005 00:56

Yep 701 for 99 model and 702 for the 2000/1 model

http://www.powercommander.com/buynowbike.shtml

Still worth checking the filter, just remove it and bridge it out for now, if it runs OK without the filter then you'll know it was the problem at around 3 bar of fuel pressure thats a fair amount of flow and it will certainly not help if the filter is starting to block up.

nelly 22-Nov-2005 01:10

Check you haven't squashed a fuel line when the tank is pulled down? will give similar symptoms to a blocked filter or low fuel pressure.

diehard 24-Nov-2005 14:38

Throttle position sensor switch anyone? Seems to be the thing that the dealer's keep telling me it could be. Btw, just about to remove the fuel filter, what skidlids sugested I try... Fingers crossed.

diehard 24-Nov-2005 15:46

Well I have just ran it with and without the filter and still the same. So I'm just gonna take a pic of what I believe is the switch and post it on here, to see if anyone has any ideas.

diehard 24-Nov-2005 15:54

Is this it?

diehard 24-Nov-2005 15:56

The larger area:

P.S. I have just bought a workshop manual for this bike so hopefully that will help. When it arrives that is!

skidlids 24-Nov-2005 16:00

No thats not it thats the timing pulse pickup, throttle position switch is on the side of one of the injector bodies

diehard 24-Nov-2005 17:34

:sing: Oh yes!!! I've cracked it, well at least for now. Took the connector off the throttle switch (exactly where you said it would be skids), and it was rusted and full of water. Now after loads of contact cleaner and screw driver scraping, I re-assembled it and hay presto... She works (touch wood). Give her a blast up the street and a-OK. Cheers for all the help ppl, much appreciated, but take mental notes incase someone else gets this prob!

P.S. when the manual arrives I'm more than willing to help anyone out if they get stuck too.

Cheers,

Diehard
