On my Bros pc now but my laptop now wont go after i used it this morning. turn it on enter power up password then i get black screen with white text saying it may have been shutdown to soon or a power cut etc, so choose from 5 options:-

safe mode
safe mode with network
safe mode with command prompts
start up in seetings that were last saved by windows
normal windows start up

none of them work once one is selected a blue screen with white text comes up for a second to fast to even read.

Then goes back to asking for power up password:o:o

Help please:)

Its running xp pro by the way:D

Can you tell if the hard drive is running up...usually a drive light present somewhere.

can you boot it from a Floppy / CD/DVD instead and 'see' the HD?

Good luck - Frank

Lee1980 26-Nov-2005 16:31

Yeah the light, lights up and can hear it go just wont go pass the power up stage, I hvae 5 discs with all the standard software that came with it but when insert the first one it says all data on c drive will be lost if i do this.

weeian 26-Nov-2005 18:31

try puting in the xp disk & do a recovery, sounds like your getting a BSOD (blue screen of death)

go all the way to where it asks you to install xp then choose the recover option.

weeian 26-Nov-2005 18:35

what that will do is rewrite the operating system but leaves everything else intact.

Lee1980 26-Nov-2005 18:48

Im pretty sure i only have 5 discs called product recovery discs 1-5 and the first one says all data on c will be lost if i continue, can i gat any xp disc? should i have one?

Thanks for replies guys:bouncy::bouncy:

Lee1980 26-Nov-2005 19:13

Im told it came preinstalled on lap top and u dont get a disc:mad::mad:

Just a book and sticker :lol:

weeian 26-Nov-2005 20:02

if it was a pre install then im not sure what way it has been preinstalled, they could have done it a few different ways, do you know how to take the hard drive out?? what you could do is take out the hard drive and take off it what you need, then id just reinstall windows XP to be honest.

Heres the blue screen managed to get a pic after it only flashes up for less than a second, pressed F8 and tried all the options listed from re-booting to debugging and its till just goes back to power up password screen.:(:(

Try the Tantrum Kick start method. Place the machine 2 meters from the kitchin door at an angle of 60 degrees to the perpundicular, take three steeps backward , retrace you route to wards the said machine and kick it as hard as you can to eject said machine skywards and beyond to rubbish heap in corner of garden. On a safety point dont forget to disconnect the power cable otherwise whiplash will be an unforgetable experiance If this proves unsuccessful there is Plan B . 4D

Lee,

Have a look here which may offer some help.

It's the support area of Microsoft.com

If you put the error code in that you got on your screen (i.e. "STOP: 0x000000ED) you get to here

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;297185

Good luck

Guy

Thanks Guido, had a look on there but think my prob is different took this pic of what comes up if i select either of the modes (safe mode etc) this is then followed by the blue screen ( as psoted above) then it reverts back to power up password :o:o

Disc partiton bit worries me has the hard drive bust?

weeian 27-Nov-2005 17:45

yea lee that looks like the Hard Drives packed in m8.

i had that error on a laptop this week and had to replace the hard drive, dont worry tho theyre not much to replace.

/ian

Lee1980 27-Nov-2005 18:03

Awwwww damn, shame if it is bust got loads of mp3s not backed up recently and downloaded autocad to that actually worked to.

Must back up to disc every month in future:rolleye::rolleye:

Might take it down local pc reapir shop to see if they can check it or something and try the 5 recovery discs i got with it to.

If its packed in then surely wouldnt it work at all?

weeian 27-Nov-2005 19:31

it'll be booting up off the bios, just cant boot up the Hard Drive

/ian

Lee1980 27-Nov-2005 20:01

So you mean i may as well boot it out the door?:lol::lol:

Thanks for your help Ian. What I think has happened is the battery has died over time so when i pulled cable it didnt go on to battery power and was obviously doing something important at the time:o:o ooooooooops

swannymere 27-Nov-2005 23:18

:devil:Try typing 'administrator' as the password, but tbh if your partitions are playing up,you'll need a new HD:puzzled:

weeian 28-Nov-2005 01:52

if its a decent lap top then just get the hard drive replaced m8, then reinstall windows and thats you up and running again.

/ian

Lee1980 28-Nov-2005 10:04

Will try the adminastrator one tonight, but if its fooked:lol::lol:

Its a Vaio with a busted hinge to neatly 3 yrs old and the batt wont charge so time for new i expect:(

keith888 29-Nov-2005 17:32

Might still be worth trying to borrow an original Windows XP installation disk to boot from that as ian suggested (or take it into a repair shop to check). A colleague at work had a similar error a few weeks back. The XP recovery didn't run when I tried that but I then tried chkdsk and it managed to find & fix a duff sector (XP booted up OK after that). Seems a shame to bin it if its something similar.

JPM 29-Nov-2005 17:48

Sounds like the OS either needs reloading from scratch and/or the HDD is stuffed, either way you've probably lost the lot to be honest.

Your recovery CD's are a a waste of time in situations like this as they will only allow you to start from scratch as you haven't got a direct copy of XP.

Also being a lappy, unless you're going to fork out some cash to plug a 2.5 inch drive into a standard IDE connection to master/slave two drives using a standard PC it's unlikely you'll get the data back.... one of the joys/banes of owning a laptop unfortunately.

Lee1980 29-Nov-2005 17:51

Thanks Keith,

I have not managed to get it to a shop yet, will on weekend. I guess they will charge to have a look at it even if its just to say its dead:(:(

Quite right in that it will be shame to bin it, dont need a new one either and will lose quite a bit of data to, thats if it is that simple to fix I hope:D:D:D

Lee1980 30-Nov-2005 22:15

No Worries people:D:D

Used the 5 recovery discs and it now works but have lost all of stuff on c drive luckily it was partitioned, so not lost all of it phew!!!

Thanks for everyones help :D:D:D
