Magnesium Bling...

Seriously thinking about one of these !!
I spoke with the guy that runs the shop today and he has to have them made specially, he isn't carrying an immediately available stock.
So I was thinking that if any of you bling merchants out there wanted one that I could take the 'orders' and negotiate a bulk discount with him.
Let me know what you think.
cheers

Ouch, that's expensive. They do come up a good deal cheaper than that. RPRmoto had one a while ago.

Rgds, Rob

851neil 29-Nov-2005 15:10

Rob, yes it's expensive - that's why I thought more of us buying could get the price dropped.
If youv'e seen these advertised at lower cost before what target price should I be aiming for with this part ?
cheers

I can't find the old ebay thing, but I think it was less than 200 Euros

Jools 29-Nov-2005 16:36

I like the thought of magnesium...especially mag wheels...but I'm a bit concerned over it's tendency to corrode into powder

Rob B 29-Nov-2005 17:04

Not so bad on the clutch side but not 100% advisable for the water pump housing either.

phil911 29-Nov-2005 19:13

Interesting !!! ...

On circuits when racing, the unique cooling fluid approved is : Water !!!
but water and magnsesium aren't very good friends, espacially on Ducatis, coz the water pump is included into the alternator case.
Thus, if you want to keep your magnesium case as long as possible, you must empty the circuit frequently ....

However, if you use your bike on the open roads with a magnesium case, you can use special glycol water cooling without risk !!! Magnesium doesn't negatively react with this chimical fluid ...

Last advise :
- MOTUL recently created a special cooling fluid for the association Aluminium/Magnesium. The liquid color is red and issued from the range : "Factory line".

I already bought some bottles in order to test ...
I'm very confident after the study of the technical and chemical informations ...

Now, up to you !!!

851neil 29-Nov-2005 19:51

Phil sounds good to me - I now need to ask him if they do the alternator side as well !!

If only he could cast the Ducati script into it and paint em green. Then youd have something.

Like the one on mine.

851neil 30-Nov-2005 10:08

now I just want to cry - arrrrrrrgghhhhhhhh
verrrrry nice...

FiscusFish 30-Nov-2005 10:21

Tecmoto have the Ducati ones listed for £298 http://www.tecmoto.co.uk/magnesium/magnesium.htm .

Don't know if they actually have them in stock but if they do don't they offer the DSC a discount (10%?).

851neil 30-Nov-2005 11:50

wow, that's more like it - cheers fiscus, never mind e-bay tecmoto here I come...

Jools 30-Nov-2005 13:10

Interesting...that's £198 for a solid one, and £298 for a vented one.

Hmmmm...£100 for fresh air ;)

Ah but its more than just fresh air Jools, its the extra noise that drives the Harley guys nuts when I ride the Duc to the dealer to get parts for my FXR. Thankfully the owner of the dealership and the 2 older mechanics there love the bike and arent your typical "rightous bro" types.
:D

Rob B 30-Nov-2005 14:28

Surely you'd get a solid one cut out for less that £100. I've just had mine done as part of the winter rebuild.

851neil 30-Nov-2005 14:40

yup I would have thought it would be less than 100 notes - think I'll be looking at a couple of machine shops to get quotes and look to a solid one...

loony888 02-Dec-2005 11:28

the problem is, the magnesium has a zinc di-chromate coating on it, you machine the venting into it and you will have to remove the window and the crank end bush to get it replated. if you don't the mag will absorb moisture from the atmosphere and corrode.:burn:
also, the tecmoto ones have the new type logo, not era specific to our models.
p.p.s, the one on e-bay looks like it suits the testastretta, different to the desmoquattro.

You can always get some of this lovely stuff, works great. I have some to redo the paint on my cover.

phil911 03-Dec-2005 19:10

Chromate or oxide ???

Ducman851 04-Dec-2005 01:26

The Chromate, I just ordered it today.

phil911 04-Dec-2005 02:21

OK, don't hesitate to send few pics of the result !!
I'm very curious about the color ...
Thanks

Ducman851 04-Dec-2005 23:00

Consider it done Phil.

Ducman851 08-Dec-2005 02:49

Found this little gem today, if you REALLY want a cool cover for your bike. Abit on the steep side too.

NCR Mag cover

851neil 08-Dec-2005 09:09

that's pretty neat, but fully open ? nasty mess of your leg/foot if you were to drop the bike and get it stuck underneath...

CL955 10-Dec-2005 00:11

Downside of vented covers

I get a fair bit of crap from the clutch deposited all over my lovely white frame now the cover has been fully vented by an over-enthusiastic engine tuner! Not helped by a very high first gear though...

phil911 06-Jan-2006 00:23

I'm quite sure you won't be indifferent ...
