Advice please
 

What fork weight oil is best for the early 600ss marzochi forks. Reason i ask is Im about to do a rebuild on mine and as most of the known suspension Gurus say they cant do anything other than a service etc, i will do it myself, Last season I ran 10W silkolene Race suspension fluid and it did seem a little over damped, So before i get the drill out what are the majority using???

Standard weight is 7.5 Glynn-that is what I gave you-I think??

I went the 10w route to go with the single rate Ohlins fork springs, only time I could say they were acting odd was on the Brands GP ciruit where on one of the corners they were rebounding a bit faster than I would have liked.

Glyn - dont drill your dampers !
Just mix the fork oil grades !
MUCH cheaper and easy to go back to where you were :D



Can you tell us a what you think about the ohlins springs skids please.

As I fit single rate Ohlins springs to all my bikes I think they're Grrrrrrrrrrrrrreat

I agree with Skids on the Ohlins springs too:D

but, on my (Snot) M600 forks - reworked, I use 5w full synthetic competition oil, like MX type, which seemed to work really well. But these are Showa forks.

Andy was very happy with them, particularly after we added shims to pre-load the springs a bit more at the first meeting at Cadwell. You can see how he did from the 1st 2 races results(no 36) ...and rides at 13 stone fully kitted out.

Thanks guys I think I will try the 7.5 weight oil route, Skids if i recall has hacked up (technicall of course) a set of springs for another bike, in mine i have hagon progressive springs and 10w oil with a 90mm air gap. They are great pretty much everywhere but on the brakes the rear end is too loose for my liking. At caddy I was matching kev and he seemed pretty stable going into the twisties hard on the brakes but i had my eyes shut so that i couldnt see the rear wheel overtaking me. Maybe a little less rebound on the rear will help too, Suspension does my head in.:barfy: Ideally I would like to get me mits on some single rate springs but no one seems to make them for the marzochi`s............. However kirstys showa clad monster is sat in the garage and im sure she wouldnt mind:eureka: Honest shhh

Hacked up springs, not me i'm good at this modification lark. In my original marzochi forks I used Ohlins 1.0kg/mm Spings meant for a Honda Firestorm with a suitable preload spacer. In the later Showa forks I fitted Ohlins 0.9kg/mm 748/916 springs. None of this progressive stuff I like my forks to feel the same all the way through there travel.

I have Ohlins springs in my forks too and they performed flawlessly. Unfortunately the rider didn't :lol:

did u notice the difference from std ant.?....or did they come with the ohlins internals.?

As I mentioned above I used 1.0kg/mm Ohlins springs destined for a Honda Firestorm.
I always use Ohlins fork springs and have used spring rates from 0.85kg/mm up to 1.0kg/mm.
Weight and riding style come into it as does front to rear weight bias and available fork travel. Then you also have preload and the air spring to play with

I had the forks setup before even riding the bike. The company took into account my weight and the track we would be riding on to get it as close as possible to perfect, within the limitations of what could be done.

Just because Ohlins springs aren't listed in their catalogue, it doesn't mean there aren't any that fit ;)

Also, I was surprised at what fork oil weight went in, but then if I told you that I'd have to kill you :lol:

I have just had a mail from marzocchi regarding springs and oil weights for race use and they recomend 5w EEK
