Which broadband???

The OAP's (Mum and Dad) keep twittering on about broadband, and I'm tempted to get them all hooked up etc and voila easy Xmas pressie for them, so who's doing some good offers at the moment? ADSL only, they don't need more than 1Mb realistically and there usage should be fairly light, had a look at a few but most want to flog an additional line for some reason, or switch to their phone service when all I want is a broadband connection, technically they don't even need mail/webspace etc

Ozz 06-Dec-2005 16:12

Personally I use plusnet which is 1MB for £14.99. I know several other DSCers use it too. Don't have many probs.

Top left and do a Compare servers

I am on Plus net unlimited 1mb £23/month
Very good service no complaints at all :D

domski 06-Dec-2005 17:03

I'm with BT Yahoo with 2mb for £29.99, but thats for unlimited bandwidth.

I'm changing over to their 'Option 1' which is still 2mb, but 1.5gb month bandwidth - should be plenty for even me and it's ONLY £17.99.

Don't wannadoo and Tiscali do it for about £15?

ali 06-Dec-2005 17:23

I did a long trawl for this t'other day (using adslguide and google) as Eclipse have gone from great to crappy in the last 12 months.

Zen Internet seem to have the best reputation, and their site speaks volumes about the right way to keep customers happy. Will be moving to them shortly....

TonyH 06-Dec-2005 17:31

Jon,

Just signed up with Tiscali 1Mb broardband unlimited usage £15.99, no phone tie ins, no extra lines, just broadband.

Recieved modem, 2 filters and all the cables and was on-line within 3 weeks of placing the order. hope this helps.

TP 06-Dec-2005 17:33

Ali, you need to add .com to the link for GPRdirect in your sig ...

and I wish you didn't put that in there ... I've just spend the last couple of minutes cleaning all the drool out of my keyboard after browsing that site ...

Dementor 06-Dec-2005 18:17

Wanadoo, up to 8mb with 2gb download limit per month, wireless and broadband phone with free calls evening and weekends £14.99. Works for me.

butch890 06-Dec-2005 18:20

Been using tiscali for about 6 months 1mb for 14.99 ,well happy.

there is an increasing scale of charges for the more you download but at any level it is cheaper than any one else i found

p.s if you like it say i sent you and i get a tenner out of it

Depends what they are going to use it for but one of the ones from this list might be suitable.

http://www.brightview.com/our_isps/index.html

The main plus point is that they have free customer support for broadband (the premium rate numbers are for dialup customers) which is based in South Africa rather than the usual Indian-based call centres (no disrespect to any indians reading this, it's just that the training is generally minimal and staff turnover is very high).

It's a small company and you can email the CEO directly if you have a complaint.

rcgbob44 08-Dec-2005 11:08

I use AOL broadband at 2.5 meg but since fitting a wireless router its so slow I`d be better off using a carrier pidgeon,.....................any ideas chaps?

JPM 08-Dec-2005 11:12

Could be anything, are you using it wirelessly or via Cat5, have you configured your router correctly, any port forwarding? firewall rules? DHCP?

TP 08-Dec-2005 11:14

I have cable with Telewest. Lower contention ratio's etc.

I get a 2MB connection with no download limits for £15 a month. I no complain.

JPM 08-Dec-2005 11:18

Very nice for you Tony :P But I did state ADSL only ;)

Yes I know, that's why I prefaced everything with "I have cable" :frog:

But it's interesting to see that cable does appear to be cheaper. I assume you've checked that your parents can't get cable?

JPM 08-Dec-2005 11:30

No, not yet :(

Saying that my Telewest/Blueyonder package is 1mb for 17.99 a month unlimited, but I have TV/Phone etc also, I wonder if I can get upgraded for free?

Dunno, might be able to. I guess whether you are still under contract means a lot.

I had all of that as well, but I've dropped the tv (now Sky+ which is much better) and phone and I got the blueyonder deal over the web cheap. You should at least be able to get 2MB for £17.99 because that's what the current deal is. It's discounted to £15 for brand new customers, which in my flat I am.

Jump on the web and put your parents postcode in and see if they can get cable.

Mr_S 08-Dec-2005 23:03

On the subject of cable, I get 10Mb from NTL for £34 / pcm. There's a 75Gb fair use limit on that, but I've exceeded that on many an occasion. But since I avoid peer to peer and don't clutter the uplink, which is the thing ISP's put FUP's in place for anyway, I don't have an issue. There's quicker ways than P2P anyway :)

As for adsl, adslguide's definitely the place for the latest deals etc.

Anyone but Tiscali, after 7pm the whole network gets swtiched to foreign servers, which slows the whole infrastructure down, the DL is appalling. I complained as they fail to tell you this anywhere in the small print, I got a refund.
