Saving weight
 

Just been checking through my notes to see about saving weight on Simon Knowlsons 748RS to make it more competitive in the Axe murders Open 600 class
And here is what I have

916 stock 3 spoke Front 5.26kg

Marchesinis
Alloy standard 5-spoke front 4.2kg
Magnesium 5-spoke front 3.1kg
Magnesium 3-Spoke front 3.2kg

916 stock 3-spoke rear 6.2kg

Marchesini
Magnesium 5-spoke rear 3.75kg

Swing Arms
Standard 748/916/996 setup 9.4kg
Magnesium Kit weight 7.1kg
Weight saving 2.3 kg

May have sourced a mag swing arm, I have to go and check it out tomorrow

Kev what is the weight minimum required?

Thats a tough question Jon, It will probably be a progressive thing, his main complaint is the amount of time it takes him to slow the thing up especially into Quarry corner at Castle Combe, this is due to a combination of excess weight and brakes that are a bit lacking.
In the bikes current state he finished 2nd behind Nigle Reeds Suzuki at castle combe with a best lap of 1m 18.22s, which was 0.5 secs a lap faster than 3rd place man Kenny Watmore on the MotoRapido 1026
So Simon certainly knows how to ride the bike.
His best lap of the day was a 1min 15.4s on his R1 which he arrives at Quarry corner travelling a lot faster and manages to get the bike slowed and turned easier than the Ducati which arrives travelling at a lower speed.

Mag wheels and Swing arm will certainly help which will take just over 3 Kilos off the bike, 4-pad callipers and a Brembo Radial master-cylinder will help improve the brakes. In SoT the bike is already a bit of a giant killer but the new 600s like yours when fully race preped are a differnt story.

If we robbed Senna3's 916 Senna of all its carbon we could save abit more weight, what do you say recon Kev fancy putting the Senna back to standard

any way you probly got just as much carbon bits as me only diffrence mines on the bike not lying around the house:lol:;);)

Another 50 grams can be saved by swapping the 375g Ohlins steering damper for the 325g DP Titanium damper, and another 50g can be saved per bar mounted Master-cylinder by swapping to Radials.
A lighter slipper clutch will save more weight over the standard RS one which is the same as found on a 748R.

Hey it all adds up

Thats because there ain't much use for Carbon huggers and alike on race bikes.
As standard tthe RS already has a Carbon ECU mount in front of the headstock, Carbon Battery holder, Carbon undertray with built in oil catch tank, Carbon clock mount but strangely no carbon airbox.

kev it sounds very complecated woudent it easer if he just went on a diet :eureka::eureka::eureka:

Kev you've seen him, he's as bad as Adrian a lean racing machine, not skinny as he is down the Gym training several times a week just no excess fat, well not until Xmas anyway.

Interesting Skids, I'm just having a quick total of kilos and decided he might be better off getting a different bike. I can know see why dukes are so expensive to truely race prep. All that magnesium and carbon sure sounds expensive.

Jon he wants to race the Ducati, he originally got it with the intention of doing BSS a few years ago after winging the NG 600 Championship and doing the odd MRO round, sadly sponsorship was very thin on the ground other than in the form of being asked to ride a R1 in the NG open races.

He has had the 748RS up for sale for a couple of years but doesn't intend giving it away. So the only other Ducati suitable is the 749R but with a wedding coming up and the price difference between what he has now and the 749R then it works out cheaper to add a few bits to the 748.
Simon also hopes to be able to use the Ducati for some of the DSC events, he is a regular reader of Pronto as a family member already is a member and likes the idea of joining us at some of the events.
