making the championship more competitive

In british touring cars, to make the championship more competitive they sand bag the race winners so that it will be harder for them to win next time out. Does any one think it would work in this series.

P.S. its just an idea so no body jump on the high horse please. dont think i could take the critisim.

dickieducati 13-Dec-2005 22:24

never like the idea of hadicaps in any competitive sport; although seems to be ok for golf; (if you can call it a sport)

if i beat someone i want it to be because i was better than them on the day not that i was gifted a place or win. would seem a shallow victory imho.

ali 13-Dec-2005 22:28

Not as completely lunatic as it sounds, but no. Some of the grid spend all their spare time and money on this, specifically to get close to the sharp end of the stick, and taking it away from them by piling a sand bag on the bike would be a serious slap across the chops.

If you want to win you need skill or balls, not a set of sympathetic rules...

Scooter916 13-Dec-2005 22:34

EEERRRM No
Its ferkin competetive enough, Dominic it doesnt matter where you are in the field there are some blinding battles going on.
Where would you put the sand bags ???? :frog:
Glyn

Dominic Clegg 13-Dec-2005 22:35

are so to win i need to grow big balls

im going to give it a good go, just seemed a good idea at the time thank you for comments i see your point

Scooter916 13-Dec-2005 22:37

Slightly off topic But, Hows the bike coming on Dom??? You about there yet?
Glyn

AK 13-Dec-2005 22:40

Sorry Dom, but we agree with Dickie, Ali & Glynn - hollow victories etc.

ericthered40 13-Dec-2005 22:40

Winner carries Two bags of sand and One bag of cement
If they still win, make them stop and knock out a small ornamental garden wall at a convenient spot on the infield. :smug:

Going by last year Geoff should have a Japanese water garden features at each circuit by the end of the year.

iv put scopion race exhaust on
KandN air filter (not sur if want to dyno jet it yet)
put on the diablo race tyres on
changed all brake hoses to braided
got race firing from mad composites (to pain ducati red)
got lower handle bars
just put the bike in for full service set carbs up , tappets etc and to change timing belts at ducati leeds in jan (iv seen what happens when they snap)
so when it come back from service strip it down put on race fairing and race number (46)
and buying up spares from ebay

Dominic Clegg 13-Dec-2005 22:46

Wot he said.

Scooter916 13-Dec-2005 22:49

Nice one getting there then, Dont you fancy doing the belts and valve clearances yourself?? its peasy and saves you a small fortune.
Glyn

skidlids 13-Dec-2005 22:49

Its not as though British Touring cars are all one make or model, I thought they did it to try and bring the performance of the cars into line so it would be the drivers and teams skills that take them to the top

Dominic Clegg 13-Dec-2005 22:53

i would do the belts an valve my self but can blam some one else if it goes wrong and if the valve are done right then could be a few horse power in it

Dominic Clegg 13-Dec-2005 22:57

im sure its going to be fun

just wanted to kick up some contraversy (just joking)

its just i was looking through the results from last year

NBs996 13-Dec-2005 23:02

Suspension front and rear ?

I have a 1996 600ss and the 2003 620ss the suspension is crap on both. The 620 that raced last year as bike 69 was hurendous.

Note was :smug:

When we took the forks out you could compress the leg down pick it up off the ground and watch the rebound damping slowly let the fork tube return to the floor.

:puzzled:

The rear shock was just wound up to max everything and not much beter then having a steel bar bolted in there.
hat off to the rider on it last year.

The rear shock can be re sprung, re valved and altered internally for extra ride height. for less than the price of a replacment.

Front forks are tricky but linear springs, oil and secret things plus prelode spacers have hopfully got them working right

psychlist 14-Dec-2005 08:01

I think every rider should have cement filled spare tyres strapped round their waists to bring them up to the official 18 stone minimum rider weight that's in the rules for 2006, people like Nick and Phil will have to have so many spare tyres they'll need periscopes to see where they're going

Ray 14-Dec-2005 10:58

er, I think they use some sort of metal weights in the touring cars? Success ballast.

If you go this route you need to do some checks to make sure the weight is attached. The big difference between DD and BTCC is tha the cars are checked for technical compliance very regularly during the course of a meeting, especially relatively easy stuff like weight, ride height.

Did any DD bike end up in parc ferme after a race for a once over this year??

Maybe a bit OTT for a club series. Some motorsport has minimum wieghts that include the weight of the pilot, takes away the advantage of the slim Jims, to level that particular variable, still leave plenty of others to go at though.

As an interested spectator the racing looked competitive as is, good battles throughout the field. You can mess with the rules as much as you like but Talent on a good machine will always win through unless you create a very artificial handicap system.

Riders can get obsessed with the machine, get a well preped machine there or thereabouts and then it's the rider that needs the development.

Don't beat yourself before the meeting starts with this their bikes better than mine crap.

Ray.

Good post there Ray:)

C, whose bikes are fast - possibly  dunno about the riders tho!:o

dickieducati 14-Dec-2005 12:00

my bike will be faster and so will i. whether it will make any difference due to evryone else also raising the bar is a matter for debate.

exactly ! but if you did not make the bike faster than last year, and did not step up your riding , do you think you would finish further down the field than this year...!.?

dickieducati 14-Dec-2005 12:16

i recon so. being in the 620 class i would assume there will be a few more sharks around. working on the assumption that any total novice will go for the 583 class

I think most who raced last year now know what is required to win or place higher overall....certainly most are as you say making improvements to machines where they can, and will start the season with perhaps a more focused mind set.

Next year will be more competative than this year with a higher concentration of people able to challenge top 10.

at least next season we know where to find our grid spot...thats one worry we dont have....

very true! although i only did 7 races i feel alot happier about the whole racing scene. there are plenty of things i wont have to worry about this year leaving lots of time to worry about other things!

really got to step up to the plate this year.

Chris Wood 16-Dec-2005 13:08

The mind game is where the advantage lies for those who raced last year.....

We should have a better idea of how much harder to push it, how the tyres work from cold and how the mini ducs work.....

CANT WAIT!!! Might even ride the whole season, not just alternate races,..
