The weakest link Pic says it all |
oooeerr I had one brake on mine it was made by a company that sounds like eee k :( It went throught crank case they would not except responsability but gave me £250 for the length of time it took them to come to that conclusion :flame: |
Happened earlier this evening, I was popping up to Dallas's house / garage on my 996Bp with my adjustable offset yokes in my rucksack as we were going to swapping them over with the mag yokes currently in the bike that will be going in Dallas's 996SPS race bike. The roundabout just p the road from me is a prime example of road planners having no idea of what they are doing. with 3 lanes very quickly becoming 2 as I had a car on my left nearly brushing my leg and I was in danger of having to do a lextra lap of the round about I thought I would put the power on and dive for my exit. Sadly it was more power than the chain could handle. Not only do I now need a new chain but I also have a hole in my alternator cover / left engine casing to repair. Needless to say we also didn't get the yoke changed over. |
Ooooerr !!!! :( |
Doh smoother wrist action sir ? |
Oh Skids:( Ouch!:o |
Oh dear Kev - hope you were OK. The same thing happened on my trackbike - with the same brand of chain - thankfully it was only on one side it snapped and I sorted it quickly. Is there another link that looks dodgey or is it just the photo? Frank |
oh balls:( |
As long as you're OK mate. |
And you remember the recent post showing the metal plate to protect the crankcase......................................... .............. Ducati discontinued it:( |
Kev, What a bugger. Sorry to hear that, mate. Rgds, Rob |
:o Blinking heck skidlids, that was a close shave. Glad you are ok, could have been worse!! DC. [Edited on 18-12-2005 by DC] |

Yep I remember the plate and have a pic somewhere as I want to see if my mate can get some made in stainless, wish I'd chased it up before now. Only the one dodgy link which is bad enough for a chain that has only been on the bike since the end of September |
Blimey!:oGlad your OK. Moley:rodent: |
Glad to hear your ok kev :o go for REGINA GOLD HD CHAINS simply the best;) |

I had a DID chain go on me (many years ago mind). The chain was about 300 miles old and initially they tried to say I'd fitted it wrong. After explaining I worked in the motor trade they reneged and paid full expenses to recover the bike and repair the broken crankcases. They also supplied a new chain. They reckoned a stone had become lodged between the plates. What do I care. Full marks to DID |
Bad luck, Kev. Same thing happened to me last year at Croft on the last lap with the finish line in sight.:( Coasted across the line, lost two places, and the chain ended up neatly folded up in the belly pan. No damage other than a couple of marks on the frame. |
Well as of last weekend I have patched the hole in the alternator casing for now with some Epoxy putty which is holding up well and when the spring comes and the 998 is back out on the roads I will look at replacing the casing with the spare I got from Jim at Bike Enders and then get the original repaired. Also looking at getting my mate Adrian to try and make me some small protective gaurds in stainless similar to what Ducati use to offer. The chain that snapped was from DIDs Gold series Race chains, rated for Endurance on bikes over 750cc, don't think it allowed for the torque of a 996. I have replaced it with another DID chain from their VM range (As I already had a new one on the shelf)and this one certainly has thicker side plates. So at least the bike is back on the road complete with the asjustable offset yokes on which i'm running 4mm less offset than standard. |
what make of chain would you recommend, my mate can get me E K at just over cost, worthwhile or not ?? |
Kev, I am curious as to why you'd want to increase the trail by reducing the offset. Are you lacking stability? Decreasing the offset will make the bike harder to turn, won't it? BTW, I used to use 28-30 mm offset with the 23.5 deg angle. [Edited on 3-1-2006 by Felix] |
Felix the standard offset of my original Yokes I make 36mm which results in the standard trail figures of either 91mm or 97mm depending on which rake setting is used. As I have a Lengthened swingarm (standard one extended) which Ray Stringer had done when he was racing a much modified 916SP Devimead Ducati along side team mate Steve Hislop on a full Factory Corsa in 1995, I thought I would go with his settings. From what I can make out Felix your bike on 23.5 degrees with 28mm offset would be runing longer than standard trail of 99mm which is quite a common figure for the Factory race bikes. So the answer to the question --- Why increase trail by reducing offset ? Answer--- because its what appears to work on Ducatis which is one reason I'm against using the standard 23.5 degree setting with standard offset yokes He fabricated a different different headstock spindle that allowed him to use the standard SP yokes fitted with eccentrics to achieve a yoke offset of 32mm identical to the 1994 Factory Corsas. Hizzys 95 Corsa had a offset of 30mm Foggy's 955 from 1995 ran 100mm of trail and a head angle of 24.5 degrees along with the longer Corsa swingarm, used 17" wheels and had a weight bias of 51.5% Fr and 48.5% rear weighing 153kgs with No fuel tank but with oil & water. Wheelbase was given as 1428mm. |
Had this happen to me a couple of times, and have learnt from it. Once on an old TZR250 and the chain was old, and also on a ZZR600 where the previous pillock fitted the sping clip the wrong way round and it let go after 2 months + Scares me to death now. I have just gone back to a 525 on my NC30 and also on my 916 I bought brand new chains from new 999's as they were being replaced with gold racing 520 chains. The original stuff doesnt look pretty but is damn strong and weighs a ton (hence why they get junked) And to be honest i am sure a well maintained OE equipment 525 chain is more than up to the job of hauling an old 916bp about with ease - hell i reckon it would pull the QE2 |
