Got it!

all I can say is.... DESMO ME UP!!!

Jeez!! This thing pulls my arms out of their sockets! And I love the sound, so thumpy!

She started on the button 1st thing this morning even after a 3.5 hour trip down the M5 on the bike trailer.

Just a couple of questions...

1. what is a safe amount to rev it up to when riding?
2 Is it common for the choke cable to not really be effective? As mine doesn't seem to rev or idle any differently with it on...
3. does it need a steering damper?
4. How sexy are they??!

thanks

paul

skidlids 23-Dec-2005 09:48

I recentley picked up a 750SS to convert to a Minitwin racer.

Rev wise I wouldn't go beyond 9k and as far as the power range is concerned I suspect it starts to drop off just after 8000rpm, I will know more when my bike is finished and been on a Dyno

when my choke lever is fully pushed forward the bike certainly revs higher

Doubt if you will need a steering damper with the standard shock but may need one if you decide to fit a 900SSie shock to raise the rear

Sexy ???? Looks = not really, Sound = depends on exhaust and airbox lid mods.

If you need a right hand caliper I have one I could sell

Derek 23-Dec-2005 10:08

Congratulations Paul. Enjoy :)

The choke lever should bring the revs up as well as richening the mixture. There is probably too much slack in the cable. It pulls on a linkage which slides across allowing the choke plungers on each carb to move out. You won't really be able to see what's happening without taking the airbox off. But I'm sure you'll be taking the time over the next few weeks to give the bike a good going over.

Cheers

I think the old SS is a good looking bike. Not 916 beautiful sure, but mine still gets lots of attention. A good bike for not much money. My non biking friends think I must be loaded. They are shocked when I tell them how much my bike cost.

Paulo, here's mine. Have fun. Have you got the beers in yet?

phillc 23-Dec-2005 10:17

Not sure on the older carbed SS bikes, but my revious '99 injection model 750ss had a rev limiter. Rev it until it won't rev no more. I rarely hit the limiter in truth, probably only on track days.

Sterring damper, never used or needed one.

And your choke cable should work :-) You'll need it in winter!

paologray 23-Dec-2005 10:34

I thought it might just be a bit slack, my rgv had a sticking choke problem so Im well trained in that department!
I think i prefer to use the torque rather than the revs to ride it...
Is there an Idle adjust screw? It might not need sorting, but maybe its because of my dodgy choke, as I only work 2 miles away from home and Im not sure its hot enough when I get to work...

Iconic944ss 23-Dec-2005 13:59

Well done Paul - good man.

Questions all seem to of been answered - Skids has been spoilt by too many toys to play with :D - of course the SS is a classic, not as 'Iconic' as a 916 but they do look 'Right' in my opinion.

Here is a link to download owners and workshop manuals (acrobat needed to view).

Frank!! Asbolute legend, thanks for that workshop manual link. Phew... nearly bought one then!

chicken 23-Dec-2005 14:50

Congratulations Paolo!

Another member with good taste.
On warming up, make sure that you leave the bike running for a couple of minutes before setting off as it needs time to get oil to the top of the cylinder - I know it must be tempting to just get on and ride, especially if you only live 2 miles from work.

paologray 23-Dec-2005 19:51

yeah, being a big 2 stroke nut I always warm all things up before I get going. Car, rgv, Duke etc... my friends think im wierd.

1st problem with the Duke... clutch slips under full throttle at about 7,000 rpms, its fine around town and half throttle/3 quater throttle, but the revs shoot up to about 9,000 and it goes into "moped" mode as i like to call it!

Do I need a new clutch? Is there a way to check and adjust? it has the oil clutch too...

Nothing there to adjust I'm afraid. Its a case of stripping it out and having a look. Not quite as easy to do as the dry clutch models, but pretty straight forward.(That link to the manual will come in handy!;) )

Your slipping clutch could be down to the oil. Dont use fully synthetic oil on a wet clutch ducati. As i have had the same problem in the past. You may get away with cleaning the plates with petrol and changing the oil.

paologray 25-Dec-2005 03:08

yeah I know too much about using fully synthetic oil in motorbikes!!! believe me!
well its crimbo now, so Im warranted to rest a bit!!
Merry christmass everyone xx

adnydrum 25-Dec-2005 22:42

Paul,
Well done with the bike. I sent a U2U about the pipes if yer still interested.

paologray 25-Dec-2005 23:57

adnydrum, the pipes should be on their way to me soon. I payd the guy earlier this week, so maybe sometime between now and the new year...

Im going to have a go at fitting them on my bike, if they dont fit they're yours mate.

Looking forward to the week ahead, 4 days of sunsine where I live! cannot wait!! All those glorious valleys.... mmmm

Off to the shops tomorrow to buy some nice new boots too!

adnydrum 26-Dec-2005 00:07

Cool; get in touch as & when. Get out there & cane it. Has to be done, you know you want to.

Iconic944ss 26-Dec-2005 00:31

Hi,

Infinity still have these Sidi Black rain boots at the same price I bought em for during the year - I'm REALLY impressed with em.

Good luck - Frank

paologray 26-Dec-2005 01:00

They look great! But my calf muscles are bigger than Roberto Carlos' thighs!!
Might just plod around tomorrow and see what fits. Ill try the "I can get those online for £100..." line, see what it turns up...

Am I correct in thinking the bolt holes on my 750 are 40mm?

thanks

paololololololololololo.

paologray 26-Dec-2005 01:02

Oh, and the choke is fine! I didnt realise it clicked, and then turned a bit more! Still not failed to start, touch wood, and there's no smoke on start up-which gets a good thumbs up from me!

Really the only things i can find wrong with it are...
1. Cracked indicator lense-right
2. Slipping clutch at high speeds, under load, giving it a fisting...

Iconic944ss 26-Dec-2005 01:14

Good man - yep - caliper spacing will be 40mm mounts, you can get adapters to use a more modern 65mm caliper.

Strangely, my calves are big too from too many years of cycling etc and I occasionally have probs with boots - trying them first is a MUST before ordering online for stuff.

1. indicator lense - MOT fail if it shows white light from memory.

2. Clutch - try an inspect / clean to start with.

Merry Xmas - Frank

Does anyone know where I can find any manuals for my 1000SS? Had a look at the links you posted Frank and cant see any for the 1000 or are the 900 ones fine to use?

Cheers.
Paul

Iconic944ss 02-Jan-2006 15:40

I have a feelung the 1000SS is too new for the workshop manuals to be 'freely available' if you follow my gist. I cant see the fuel injection / electronics being that different from the SSie models - but as usual, I could be wrong.

The Ducati website themselves usually post basic manuals for all the bikes since about year 2000

I'll have a mootch :)

The 900SSi.e manual should cover about 90% of your bike.Obviously the twin spark motor and some of the electrics will be differant.

Iconic944ss 05-Jan-2006 12:03

Well Paul,

I've searched all of the net and the P2P sites and cant find a 1000ss manual I'm afraid :(

Someone must have some good contacts as there are some on Ebay - here are two of the best, first is interesting as it has alsorts of Duke stuff:

Umm I thought this might be the case. Since buying the bike Ive found very little by way of info etc tailored for the 1000SS and Ducati dont seem that bothered either - makes me wonder if there is any future for the SS if you get my gist...

Anyway, I really appreciate your looking and for the links I shall check them out and see.

Thanks again, very much appreciated.
Paul
