748 Exhaust removal and swap. Alright gents, this is the next project to run alongside the cleaning and prepping of the 916 and that's to fit the new race cans to the Mrs' 748s. So, i'm unsure as to the process/plan. It's only a 45mm pair of cans so will be going striaght onto the current headers. Do i need to remove the subframe to allow to lift the cans enough ? or can i just removed the springs, straps and turn them outwards to then raise them ? Cheers in advance guys. |
just undo the numberplate and the bottom two bolts on the sub frame. you can then leaver it up enough to lift of the pipes. that's about it |

You need a gasket type paste for the joining pieces when putting back together ? |
shouldn't do. I never used one. however I remember seeing shazam say that gaps can cause backfire. ? have a look and see if there is any residue when you take em off |
Just undo the springs mate and they will come off. There is no need to remove antthing else. |
no...so easy even I can do it!! bit fiddley getting the rubber thing on that holds the end cans in place, and if the cans are tight to get off then a hairdryer may be handy (was with mine) to warn the pipe a bit and make it easier to move...just unbolt and replace :) but shouldnt you be singing and drinking beers by now??? LOL |
thanks lads.... no beer and stuff tonight. Up in St Davids for Xmas with Mrs' familly... rather quiet and sophisticated... As you can imagine, i fit right in !!!!!!:devil::devil: |
I find the springs a right B*****d to clip back on, apparently there is a spring pulling tool you can buy. I normally use a pair of pliers and settle for cut knuckles also. :D |
Dont use pliers............ use a length of speaker wire. Hook one end on the exhaust work our where you want the other end to go..........and pull it with the wire looped through it!;) |
I made up my own hook. remove the rear pillion peg brackets. remove the small bolt holding the two cans together, then undo the top bolts on the bracket (8mm)remove springs and twist the right hand pipe outwards Just becarefull when removing the right hand pipe it will be very close to the pillion bracket bolt hole on the sub frame. |
or, Just use one of the exhaust springs to put the others on, then use a adapted coat hanger. DC.;) |
Be aware that while you are not changing the headers 748E headers are different from 748S headers (Male & Female bits) if you want to go from 45mm to 50mm My 748S came with "E" headers that cold not be changed to 50mm without changing the headers, when I bought my "50mm" termis the dealer decided to fit 45mm (instead of telling me that the bike had come from the factory with the wrong headers) This was only discovered after a period of time at which a discussion took place and new headers and 50mm termi's were supplied:o I hope this makes sense, if not please U2U me PS If you are going from 45mm - 50mm then make sure you get an unrestricted link pipe.:puzzled: [Edited on 28-12-2005 by m1keyp] |
45-45 mate. just from road to race. |
Well that was pretty painless.... :) Worst part was getting the bloody straps back on afterwards.... they're a pain in the backside :saint: Just waiting for the charger to be completed on her battery and will fire it on up and see what it sounds like. the Missus will be impressed, i'll even make a recording for her of them :) |
