Which chain lube

Hi all, i've been using castrol chain wax for the last umpteen years but i hate the white mess it leaves and i'm considering a change back to a more 'conventional' lube - even if it means cleaning the back wheel and sprockets a bit more often.

Any suggestions? What about a scottoiler on a 996? all suggestions welcome. I even used to wipe engine oil on my chains with a cloth at first which was actually pretty good.

Cheers !

WD 40, cant get better.

Dementor 28-Dec-2005 11:54

Agree with Adam WD40, some say it damages the O rings, but never experienced it myself. Cleans the chain, keeps the rust away, you get no build up and it's an excellent lube.

3 in 1 oil, less than a quid from your local pikey shop.
Just keep the chain clean (I use WD40) and apply often.

Wurth Dry Chain Lube, great stuff, hardley flings, very good.:D

I've used Castrlol chain wax as well, the white build up is not the best sight but I do like the way it works and does not end up all over the bike.

Tend to wax the chain and leave the bike to stand for 24 hours, then spin the back wheel while it's on the stand and wipe off the excess wax.

I'd be interested as well. Does anyone have a Scottoiler on a 996? Pros? Cons?

i use profi dry lube its the best chain lube i have ever used been using it for 5 years motorcross enduro trackdays and road you can get it from hein gericke you might have to order it tho £9.99 for a 380mm can

I used Castrol wax as well and swear by it.

Make sure you are applying it AFTER a ride when the chain is hot, the wax and white residue are not so bad if you do it that way. With the chain expanding due to the heat you get into all the nooks and crannies.

Only balls ache is if you are cold and wet and just want to get inside.

Quick wipe of the chain before you head off out next time gets rid of any excess and you are safe in the knowledge that any you have added has worked it's way well into the chain and rings in particular all the time it has been standing since your last ride out.

I suppose the same advice rings true for WD40 which i have also used in the past and had no problems with.

Regards

ScottyB

Cheers guys. I always use wd40 on my mountain bike chainset as it seems to keep it clean and corrosion free even through the stickiest winter mud, even makes it easier to clean.

Think i'll give it a go for a while but not convinced about the flingy-ness of it quite yet !

All the best for the new year when it arrives ! :sing:

I use Wurth Dry Lube, no problems so far but am seriously considering a scottoiler so would like to hear comments

I've got a scottoiler. Chain has now done 23,000 miles with no sign of it wearing out. It only gets adjusted when the wheel comes out for tyre changes so thats about every 4000 miles. It lasts for around 750 to 1000 miles per filling as well. Most people have them set way to high hence oil all over the wheel and tyre etc.

I have one too on my 1000SS, fitted it after my first chain snapped despite being very good about cleaning, lubing etc. I have to admit to being one of those people who had it set too high initially and had oil all over the place made a right mess. Now all working okay and the chain is in excellent condition although Ive only done some 7K since it was fitted including a ride to Italy and back but its looking really good.

Scottoilers for me from now on though Im really impressed. :)

Scottoiler? Pah! They're for beardies/pipe-smokers/BMW owners. (usually all of the above)

murray snudge 31-Dec-2005 23:19

Are you sure about the BMW owners Andy?

adnydrum 01-Jan-2006 02:37
