748R Questions I have just upgraded from a 98 748 BP to a 2001 748R "non ohlins" and was wondering if the power commander I have fitted to my old bike will work on the R…? Also on my old bike I removed the mesh that covered the air vents and replaced the original air filters with an under tank air filter. Can I do the same to the R…? if so which air filter would people recommend…? Do all 748R’s have a 50mm exhaust system or is it a 45-50mm half system or all 45mm…? |
It's all 45mm. If you're not doing anything funky to the heads or throttle bodies, a 50mm half-system is the way to go. |
748r If its the pc3 then it will swop over but you will have to remap it for the R, and i use a no toil undertank filter on mine which works well, there is actually one on ebay! but removing the mesh will let all sorts of shite in and will just collect on top of the filter! |
have run non-toil filter and removed the mesh, I would recomend not to remove the mesh. (I live in Norway, maybe the roads are better in the UK) with the mesh removed, some smal stone has shoot through the nontoil filter, down the throtleboys, result 2 rockers, 1 cam , 1 broken vale, one bent valve, 2 valve guides destroyed. Dont recomend removing of the mesh.:( |
Got my 748R yesterday and the fuelling is auful. Everytime you come upto traffic lights it just stalls, you start it again and try and pull away and you have to rev the nuts of it otherwise it just seems to die so you open the throtle and then it takes off. It has a 50mm half system on it not sure if the chip has been changed. I got a pc from my old bike which i'm going to fit. Anyone got any other suggestions on how to sort it...? |
Get someone to sort it properly - like Pro-Twins. Forget the half-measures because it will be worth it in the end. |
hi there is it after a quick run and then stops a the lights ?? if it is its a problem a lot of the r's have as the exces fuel sits on the butterflys when there closed causing it to stall try getting the fueling dialed in but just keep it reaving a little at a standstill hope this helps a little thanks Jamie:) |
You need a ultimap chip from pro twins in godstone |
They all do that sir................. |
Protwins you must be joking! i'm never going there again twice I have been insulted by sales guy there and there is no way I will make the same mistake again. |
Have a word with Steve at Moto Rapido he should be able to sort it, not sure if you can use your existing power commander or not, might be possible if it uses the same connections and loaded with a R map. As for the exhaust I thought the 748Rs all had 50mm full systems :puzzled: |
Ok, you need a ultimap chip, the 2002 748 R has a 50mm system. I have a ultimap chip in my 2002 748 R and it runs sweet :smug: |
I've always found them very helpful. Quote:

I bought a JHP Chip and fitted it but it didnt appear to help things so, the bike has gone back to P&H they have been working on it and rang me this evening to tell me that the front cylinder is running to rich but the back cylinder is fine, they have tried balancing the carbs and that hasn't worked. There going to check the valve clearances tomorrow as they think it might be that. I'm getting a bit worried that there might be something quite majorly wrong , would valves clearances really have this effect...? |
A 748 doesn't have carbs. And it's often quite normal for these bikes to run slightly rich on one pot or the other. There are ways and means around this - others here with better knowledge than I can explain but, I believe and FIM chip allows control over mixture on both pots. |
This is running so rich that it doesn't fire properly on that cylinder so when you start it, it's only firing on one cylinder..! and when you try and pull away it spluters and all sorts and there is no power. |
Are P&H Ducati dealers? I don't have the knowledge to suggest a fix for this but, if they are Ducati dealers then they should have sufficient resources to solve it. |
P&H called today to sy they have found the problem. The valve clearances on the front cylinder were way to tight which has ment that the rockers and cams are damaged well very worn but they also found one of the valves is broken as well. so new valve, rockers x2 and two new cams coming up, thank god it is under waranty. |
i supose it was bret that upset you shame really the workshop guys do know their stuff |
Yes it was Bret basiclly told me my bike was a pile of sh*t, yet P&H thought it was in good nick so much they have sold it within 3 weeks. I've bought parts from them and the guy on parts and the auz guy seem really nice. A few years ago I had a 750ss which i went to protwins to trade in for a 748 anyway we agreed a px price and paid a deposit, the day I was due to pick the 748 up they rang and said that ducati had lowered the price of my 750ss new so they would have to lower the px price of my by 700 quid. I had already taken out a loan for balance and sorted the insurance and they wouldn't keep to original price. I'm sure people have had good dealings with them but this has been to put me off going there again. |
Rant, rant, bloody Pro twins, rant. Sorry to jump into this thread but i can't leave it alone when they are mentioned. Agree with the above about the back room staff Pete and rob, both good as gold. I have slated them before on here for the way i was treated by the same man, shame as they have a bike in stock that i would actually quite like to buy but i will never deal with them again. Hope your problem gets fixed quickly "Mr westy" |
thank god i'm not the only one , I thought it was me. it's funny thou the bike I have just bought from p&h was last service by them. |
Just to balance things out a little, I have to say that I have always had good dealings with ProTwins and never any problems with servicing or any of the staff that work there.:P |
