Am I the First Sucker of 2006 ? In a conversation (you guessed it ... in a pub) over Christmas a friend mentioned that there had been a recent development in crash helmet technology. The development projected an image of what was behind you onto you your visor by way of a :puzzled: series of periscope type mirrors :puzzled: running through the helmet. Am I the first (and probably biggest) sucker of 2006 or has anyone else heard of this ? I suspect I was the unwitting recipient of the first wind up of the year. If such a device exists does anyone have any details - manufacturer, cost, distributor, experience of using one, etc, etc. If this is pure fantasy then please ignore this thread and I will skulk off into obscurity for being so easily taken in !! Happy New Year everyone. Jiminy |
It exists, no idea if it's the same one, but I've seen some photo's of it ages ago now, didn't look fantastic but it worked I guess |
It's not a projection as such as far as I'm aware, it's just a series of mirrors that allow you to look up and behind yourself from the top of your visor, there was a concept picture in MCN a while back. |
there is actually something like this around yes. someone posted up a pic a while back. |
I'm told that a major uk lid distributor tested it and threw it out. Don't know if anyone else has taken it on tho?? |
It was called revu and it made me feel sick when I tried it....total pants |
thats the one Berto, was around about 18 months ago at the 04 NEC bike show, they had 3 or 4 lids that they were letting visitors try ... very distracting ... but I guess you'd get used to it .... |
Only after running into folk cos you had to take your eyes off where you were going....Head up display would be good laugh though:o |
I had seen it before on a bicycle helmet, it is called Reevu. Here is a pic of the m/cycle helmet. ![]() |
I tried one at Ally Pally last year - I found it even less useful than the mirrors on a 749.... |
Thanks folks - at least I now know I'm not the worlds biggest fool for the start of 2006. Agree with the comments - if it was any good then it would have caught on. I like the idea of a head up display though !! I guess I'll have to stick to the 749 mirrors (very astute observation there Brent - how did you know I was trying to aleviate the lack of rearward vision on my 749 ??). Have a good weekend one and all and safe travels if you're out and about. Jiminy |
:saint:Hav'nt Ducati launched a retrofit set of mirrors for the 749/999 that actually work?I'm sure i've seen some carbon fibre/black mirrors in a magazine recently.:saint: |
I was looking into these a while back. The website is http://www.reevu.com/ The company told me that they are currently only available from one stockist in Newcastle http://www.customlids.co.uk/helmets/reevu/reevu.htm but that they would be more widely available in 2006. For those that have tried it, what was the problem? Was the rear-vision too intrusive or that the image moved around with your head? oh, and happy new year to all! |
and in case you don't click on the link, it's £300. I like the sound of the option of "tinted and mirrored visors available for the rear window of the helmet"! |
Am I the First Sucker of 2006 ? Ive been called a sucker several times..............i think thats what theyve said?:puzzled: |
And if you want heads-up, this is pretty close http://www.sportvue.com/ |

yeah it's £300.. but only good if you're on an upright bike, when I tried one on and sat on a bike (average bike) all i could see was the ceiling or sky it would be outside... So i guess it's ok if you're speeding and want to see the helicopter! ha ha... I think and wonder if it would be a little offputting too as it's not all that clear and things look further away than they really are, i trust my mirrors and overlook the shoulder best.. :) |

Where have you been man..... come back down to earth...... ;) |
Chi, I actually have one of the bicycle helmets and find it quite useful. Despite the fact that every one of Berto's comments seem to be hugely negative - this time he's not too far from the truth. On the road I find it too distracting to use to frequently, as it requires an effort to almost 'defocus' your eyes to look into the mirror (to see whats behind) - take in the information and the have to 'refocus' to the road ahead again. However, for an occasional look-behind - without having to risk causing unwanted movement on a bicycle, its a good idea. Best wishes for 2006 - Frank |
