May buy a 749s, need advice

Hi Gang, got a few questions for you.

I'm in the market for a new bike and i have seen a 2003 749s for sale with loads of carbon extras inc termis for £5999. It has done less than 6500 miles, but and this is a BIG but, it has not had it's 2 year 20,000km service. It's done 4,500miles since it's 10,000km service 2years ago. It's being sold by a dealer who has had it since november. Should i avoid or buy - it looks like a good deal with all the extras, but i'm worried about the service history.

One other thing, how does this bike compare to a 748s in terms of handling? I had a go on a 748 a few years back and found it needed a lot of shove to turn in.

cheers

sl

Hi,

Check out this thread in the market place section.

A little more than you have said, but, 2,800 mile, full history and 1 owner with more carbon :D

looks cool, but i'm not a fan of race reps and it's out of my budget.

the dealer for the one i'm looking at reckons it only needs the belts changing and a minor engine service that should come to £350.

"I had a go on a 748 a few years back and found it needed a lot of shove to turn in."

Its only a question of set up..........they are infinately adjustable..........:D

andyb 10-Jan-2006 13:31

proper 2 year service............around £650! Is it at a ducati dealership?

Harv748 10-Jan-2006 13:33

I can't comment on the 749 in terms of handling or if its a good price or not, but as far as the servicing goes, it will need one before it is ridden.

Use this as a factor when negotiating the price with the dealer. If it hasn't been serviced for 2 years, then it needs the belts changing for definate, and iof they are going to do that, they may as well do a full 24 month service on it.

At a main dealer this will be £500+, at an independednt it will be 10-20% cheaper.

I wouldn't buy it without a service having been done, or a price drop to allow you to have one done somewhere else.

All decals can be removed leaving a polished carbon fibre bike. As for the budget it would work out about £1,250 more by the time you've bought and serviced yours, possibly closer if you have to pay £500 or £600 for the service... my bike has great history, 1 owner, lower mileage and will be worth more when you come to sell it, IMHO.

Can't blame me for trying.

i asked about the service, they are not a ducati dealer and are selling it for a client, they say the 'low' price takes into account that the service has been missed.

it has carbon termi, hugger, belt covers, infills, heel guards, exhaust guard and and aero screen. I get all the standard bits too.

It's either this or the new Triumph 675.

soholush 10-Jan-2006 13:47

going for the hard sell C749? ;)

You could tell him the girl in the avatar will spend a weekend with him if he buys the bike :D

andyb 10-Jan-2006 13:49

So if you found the customer............you could take around a grand of commission off!

Harv748 10-Jan-2006 13:51

So they are saying the £6k asking price doesn't include a £350+ service...so you have to ask yourself and find out if a 2003 bike is worth that much?

I don't know, but I would have thought you could find better?

Dont forget the registration age may differ from the model year!

Then there is the warranty thing...........with respect the dealer selling the one your looking at is merely an advertising space...for which they will charge the seller. They are not ducati specialists, dont understand the complexities of ducati.....and theres no warranty.

soholush 10-Jan-2006 13:57

the reg is a 52 and i get a 6 month warranty and erm.... not looking good to you guys then?

Harv748 10-Jan-2006 14:03

Its not a case of not looking good...it just looks OK, and I think at the moment with people really really struggling to sell bikes privately, you should not buy from a dealer...and hunt around for a privare sale bargain, as they are out there to be had.

The fact that the dealer is selling it immediately adds 10% no matter what they say.

They are not a Ducati 'specialist' so what use is the warrenty to a degree, if anything goes wrong with it, it may take forever and a day for them to sort it.

I just think you could do better!

andyb 10-Jan-2006 14:11

On Autotrader..........i know its the now defunkt fylde Superbikes, but they are advertisind a 0 miles brand new 749s in proper red, 05 model for £6999 that means 2 yrs warranty etc......NEW!

2 Years Warranty, NEW BIKE, View at our showroom or order by phone, UK Spec, 04 model. THE CHEAPEST DUCATIS IN THE UK . £6,699.

KJM Superbike Ltd

theres another one....................

soholush 10-Jan-2006 14:29

it was the extras that attracted me because i would certainly buy an open exhaust and they cost around a £1000 for termis don't they?

Id start with the yougest bike i could afford first........

Youll find all the time in the world for extras...........its an incurable bug!

khu996 10-Jan-2006 15:16

I'd have to agree with Andy.

Look for the newest bike you can get for the money.

You'll always end up spending more on bling and accessories, its inevitable.

I wouldn't say that a 52 reg bike with 6500 miles for £6k is a good deal at all...shop around, and don't rush into the first bike that takes your fancy. With the ever decreasing number of new bikes being registered, I'm sure a friendly dealer will want to help you walk away with a brand new bike, and you could find a cheap way to finance the extra grand needed?

ak47 10-Jan-2006 15:25

the 749s models, especially the earlier ones, do have issues with stalling. I this is one of those then you might want some kind of warranty.

Twinfan 10-Jan-2006 19:07

The '03 749S has the non-hotted up motor i.e. the same as the current base 749 and 749 Dark. It won't have the stalling issues the later bikes have.

soholush 10-Jan-2006 20:32

thanks for all the advice guys, i think i'll avoid it and look elsewhere.
