Bummer News For ME I've just started physio on the ankle I broke last year at the Brands Desmo Due round. Some of you will recall that in June 2004 I had an operation on my left shoulder to put 4 titanium screws in to pull the cartilage back on to the bone where it had torn completely off. This was as a result of a rugby tackle gone wrong where my collarbone and shoulder both dislocated and the shoulder tore the cartilage off as it exited the shoulder joint. Anyway ... I got the physio to take a look at my shoulder last night because it's still giving me gip. I should point out that this is completely my fault for not doing the physio after the operation properly. So the physio spent an hour on it yesterday afternoon. It's actually much worse than I thought it was and the physio used the word chronic a few too many times for my liking. I was looking forward to getting a few games of rugby in before the end of the season and the main concern was the ankle but the physio reckons the ankle will be ready in 5 weeks but the shoulder could take much longer. The muscles in the shoulder are pulling my shoulder out of alignment towards the front of the shoulder and restricting a large percentage of my range of movement. Some of the muscles underneath my shoulder blade are in an almost constant state of spasm, all are under normal size. I had lost a lot of control of the two outside fingers in my left hand because a nerve had pinched and there was no strength in them. So I'm bummed now, it looks like I won't get a game of rugby in this season. I guess the only positive is that it will be fixed before the first DD race this year and I raced like that all last year. It was definitely restricting my movement on the bike and making me do things to compensate which upset the bike. Hopefully I'll be a bit quicker this year then :) I'm off to pour a large drink of something strong ... |

Bad news Tony! Having had loads of these types of injury playing football, I know how long they take to get back to something near normal!:( I hope these aren't the excuses coming out for Jerez tho'!;):lol: |
Tough news mate. Keep looking on the positive side, and keep up the treatment and it will improve, it's just a lot harder work than we ever want it to be ! I've had 4 shoulder operations in all to stop nerve impingement - so I know a bit about muscle wasting - some of the exercises to work the small muscles underneath the shoulder blade are much harder work than you believe possible ! But ! They do pay off when you keep at them ! Especially when you're an active type - as there is the incentive to go through the pain and get back to fitness again. Funnily enough, I stopped playing rugby when a bloke was tackled in front of me just as he was about to pass to me - and I heard his ankle break - and saw the bone come through. But them I'm a weedy little pom, not a lardy oz monster ;) |
sorry to hear that mate. i recon the sensible thing to do would be to slow down on the bike. just go out there and have a leisurly cruise around.;) |
TP A consultant told me a while ago that when he gives advice on physio and exercise to patients, he knows that most of us will only keep it up for a short while and will suffer from a recurring problem as a result. Human nature he called it. Enjoy the physio :D [Edited on 17-1-2006 by philthy] |
I stopped playing Rugby at age 29 as the wear and tear just got the better of me in the end. I have knackered knees, back and shoulder. The hardest part is watching my lad play for the minis. I keep thinking 'I could come back, its not too late...' |
Bad luck TP. If I was you i'd give the Rugby a rest for a while. If you do go out, you won't be able to give it your all and the thought of more trouble would be too much... Herb, I got back into swimming competatively after a 11yr gap and bored of watching my daughter, your never too old... Andy |

TP, Liam says you're an adrenalin junky and also a very silly boy. He also says my knee is pretty much stuffed and I should go for a different Consultant for a second opinion. Fluctuating news for me, good one day, bad the next. |

Use the time off Rugby Tony to enjoy the other things you love, and get yourself fully fit for a comeback of all comebacks next year! As someone who has had both ankle ligaments torn, knee replacement (ala Gaza stylee), ruptured hamstrings, dislocated shoulders, prolapsed disc and a nose that has been broken more times than I've ridden my Duke, I've now come to expect these things and use the recovery time to come back fitter and stronger than before. I actually enjoy the off time, and really enjoy the look on my team-mates faces when I return 6/9/12/18* months (*delete as appropriate) later, full of energy, ready and raring to go! know how you feel tony, just got out of hospital on saturday after tearing the cartiledge in my knee, turns out ive ruptured my cruciate ligaments as well, the operation went well but i got told i wont be able to play football again :barfy: 8 weeks off work :/ /ian |
Tough call Tony, At least there is light at the end of the tunnel and time will bring you back to fitness hope fully. You never no some thing might crop up that because of Rugby you would not have had the oppotunity to find out about. Have you thought about some thing else to fill you time with , like cliff diving or base jumping, sure safer than Rugby:lol: Ehhhh how about motor cycle racing that'll be right up your street .
