Bike won\'t start

Just went to fire up the 998 after a bit of minor fettling and it wouldn't turn over! Bastid!

It's back on the optimate now but I'm not hopeful it will start afterwards. It ran fine before I broke my ankle and I didn't leave it on the optimate the whole time, just every now and then to fully charge it.

May need a new battery :(

Bump start it ya big cat. ;-)

That's awful rotten luck Tony, given everything else that's happened lately. Surely there must be something you can do...... Must get to Jerez!

I think he has a corse slipper on it so that wont be possible.
do you have a vault meter.
or a car near by to try some jump leads ?

Ray 17-Jan-2006 20:03

TP,

Jump start it off yer car. Had to do it a few times on mine, usually after not using it for a fortnight or more. Not had a lot of success with optimates, oximisers and the like.

More hassle but if it won't start from the car with some jump leads yer in trouble.

Can't bump 'em, not unless you can run at 60 mph, too much compression on your particular model, maybe you need a foxley starter!

Ray.

TP 17-Jan-2006 21:27

Well, I have a Corse Slipper in it so bumping it would be an issue even if I could run - which I can't because of my ankle. Not taking into account compression issues.

I haven't tried jumping it off the car yet - I'll do that in the morning if it doesn't start after being on the optimate all night. I left it on the optimate for an hour and it turned over a bit but wouldn't catch. So I'll leave it until the morning and see what happens.

Bloody thing!

Day one in the jerez t/day house.......TP is stuck in the pits with a non starter...............cant have that in jerez, though there is power in the garage!

Yeah, if it won't start after being on the optimate all night and then starts fine off the car - new battery. I'll make sure it's sorted for friday.

Buy yersel a propeR Ducati (996R) never fails to start.

This helpfull advice is given to you after 4 hours in the pub and an hour in the garage, nite nite.

domski 18-Jan-2006 01:55

How long has it been since you put fresh petrol in?

May be worth a look. I spent 2 days trying to start a CBR600 once, pulling my hair out trying all sorts.

Put fresh fuel in and it fired up straight away!

Fecking machines!!!

I look up to Rattler though.........

TP 18-Jan-2006 10:30

Well, it wouldn't start this morning. It would just turn over but it really is struggling. After a chat to Nelly this morning about how the R's seem to work you needa decent battery just to get them started.

I didn't have a chance to get the jumper leads out because I had to get to work but it looks like I'll be replacing the battery. I hope Odyssey make one the same physical dimensions as the standard one. The one I put in the 996 had twice the cranking amps of the standard one it replaced wso it would be good to put one of those in the 998R as long as it fits the battery tray!

I can tell you for free that 2006 sucks the big one so far - it better improve!

Tough one TP.

An Optimate won't do much in an hour, it's only a trickle charge, may be ok overnight. Have you got a battery charger, or jump leads as said. Whatever, bring emergency kit to Jerez. I'll have my optimate and maybe battery charger if I can fit it in. There is a Ducati place in Cadiz which is not too far.

Thanks mate. It didn't seem to quite have enough current this morning - talking to Nelly seems to bear that out. I'll try jump starting it as soon as I've finished work to male sure it will start.

In the meantime I'm looking at battery's and I'll get a new one anyway. Lookout for a new battery thread.
