Progress on the Hybrid 600/620

I'm running a 620 engine in the old 600 SS chassis for this season, and so far we've stripped the bike down to the frame and dry-fitted the new engine in. Lucky no modifications were needed as it fits like a glove :D

So now we've stripped it back down and sent the frame off to be powder coated, and Mark has dropped the top yoke into the stripper bath (I did ask, but he said it wasn't that kind...) and given it a coat of clear.

Let's just say it'll look pretty good until the first crash ;)

skidlids 25-Jan-2006 00:47

Ant do you have to cut that frame brace to fit the fuel injection as you say no mods were required to fit the engine.

antonye 25-Jan-2006 00:51

Nope, nothing needed to be cut at all. Mine was a '97 vintage SS if that makes any difference! I thought the brace would foul but it fits fine.

We built it right up to the airbox in the dry fit, so the only thing left to do is mount the electrickery once we're ready, but that should be trivial.

I've got some pics somewhere of the new engine in the frame, so I'll dig them out and post them for you.

skidlids 25-Jan-2006 00:58

Well if its as straight forward as you say, I may look at ripping the engine out of the M620 and sticking it in a SS frame ready for 2007, I much prefer the size and feel of my 600SS to the 620 Mosters.

ericthered40 25-Jan-2006 01:03

ant any idea when your getting out for a warm up?

Yes, it really was that easy. The only things that you need to do is sleeve the two engine mounts (or drill out the frame to fit the larger bolts) and then make up two short brackets for the rear mounting points of the airbox, as these are about an inch inside and an inch lower than the SS. But that's it!

Frame should be ready this weekend, so once I have that back we'll start rebuilding the bike. I don't think it will be ready until March at the earliest as we have other (time consuming) things to do, but I reckon a mid-march run out would be spot on.

ericthered40 25-Jan-2006 01:38

I was going to wait till then but suddenly had the inexplicable urge to go out on the 5th of Feb. and if I Liv the 26th as well.

Always best to ride the bike your going to have your first race on A

Mid march sounds good for the next outing.

antonye 25-Jan-2006 01:41

Well I'm on hols the weekend of the 5th and fly back out to San Fran on the 26th, so it will be the first chance I get!!

ericthered40 25-Jan-2006 01:46

what will you do Brands before the race or somewhere else

antonye 25-Jan-2006 02:15

May do Brands first as it's close, just depends on when I'm free and when the bike is ready!

I want to be Antony for a month :o:D

Maybe I can be TP or the Lord while they're in Jerez, AND then be Antony for a bit, hrmmm.

I hate you all!!!!!!! ;)

Never EVER thought I'd say that!!!

That's ok mate, we hate you too :D

I've managed to rack up around 80,000 airmiles since october and I've spent more time in the US so far in 2006 than I have at home!

The only downside is that it really screws up your body clock with the constant change of time zones.

It's only 6.20pm here and I'm still at work, so no excuse for being asleep for me!!

Who are you flying to Oz with, as in which airline?

[Edited on 25-1-2006 by antonye]

phoenix n max 25-Jan-2006 03:26

FLying with Royal Brunai and I have an overnight stop in Dubai. Arrive in Perth the next day. This will be the longest i;ve flown for - 10 hours previous. I can't say i;m looking forward to it but there are rewards the other end ;)

Hey - have you spoken to Loz lately ?

antonye 25-Jan-2006 03:30

Brunai is supposed to be a good airline to fly, so I'm sure you'll have a good flight. Don't forget to save some pennies for the rest of the trip while you're in Dubai!!

Haven't spoken to Loz direct, but I know he's been at a trade show and working his ass off there then following up after. He's on holiday now and currently trying to arrange a play on someone's RD400 ...

phoenix n max 25-Jan-2006 03:33

Yeah I looked it up before I booked and they seemed to have a good rating. I hope so.
Loz was at Stoneleigh last week yes. I missed him on msn earlier. I thought he was playing with a Bandit ? I;ve been trying to convert him to a Ducati but he just keeps pullin me strings - Gonna have to give him a slap when I see him next ;)

antonye 25-Jan-2006 03:36

He does keep asking about the 916 line, so there's a chance there yet you know! I keep offering him a ride on my 748, but we never manage to be in the same place at the right time.

He said he had fun at Donington on the gixxer, so we'll have to persuade him to do a trackday around testing time for DD and show him how it's done :D

phoenix n max 25-Jan-2006 03:41

Yeah - we have to rid him of that shellsuit gixxer methinks ;)

He mentioned to me the other week when he was here about a 916 - ok we gonna have to hatch a plan. He'll be with ukrm at Snet wont he? We can convert him then if not before. I'll get him drunk in the bar and convince him to come Thursday ( somehow !) You get him booked in on the trackday assuming there is one? Obviously I wont get him too drunk but I can use all sorts of ways to get him to agree i'm sure

The plot thickens :ninja:

antonye 25-Jan-2006 03:45

Team UKRM disbanded at the end of the year and I think Neal has sold the bike and spares on. However, there was a mumering about starting up again ... which I just knew would happen!

I reckon he'd definitely be up for a Snetterton trackday, so let's start laying the foundations asap ;)

Oooer did they ?

Oh well - I think a text fest and phone call or two is on the cards but you'll have to keep the pressure on while i'm away ? Deal ?

antonye 25-Jan-2006 03:56

Sorted :D

phoenix n max 25-Jan-2006 04:03

Perhaps we can get him to Oulton ?

antonye 25-Jan-2006 04:06

Or maybe all of them? :D

phoenix n max 25-Jan-2006 04:13

Now there's a thought. I will put a plan in action tomorrr----- today even. You'll have to keep up the pressure while I away tho ;)

domski 25-Jan-2006 04:54

Jesus you two, get a room will ya

:D

I would have joined in, but I'm busy practicing too...

...not for an exotic flight though :(

I've got the old PS2 whirring away and the odd website to knock out (they will be odd after I've done them)

So, what we talking about now?

Five cylinders?? :o

Ant, did you use a spacer through the engine cases or drill and re-tap the frame for the larger 620 engine mounting bolts?

I've used the std rear top bolt with the casing sleeved (£2.99 from Homebase!) but can't make my mind up how to do the front as I may want to be able to put a 583 motor back in at some stage....

Did you have any clearance problems with the ECU/battery under the tank or are you relocating it all for better weight distribution?

Cheers, Paul

Monty 25-Jan-2006 17:45

Antonye-you dissapoint me-I clicked on the photo link expecting to see the bike and all I saw was a top yoke-and very pretty it looked too.
Just checked and noticed the photo title-Doh-must get my glasses checked.:P

Both front and back mounting points on the engine were sleeved to save modifying the frame for exactly the same reason as you. Mark brought along a collection of oem engine bolts and we found that the 900 bolt was fine for the front - I can measure it if you want as they were all about 5 to 10mm different in length.

As for the battery, we didn't try the tank but just fitted all the airbox in place which works fine. It sits lower than the 583 engine one, by about an inch, so I don't think it will have clearance problems... at least I hope not! I'm sure it wouldn't take much to go to a Monster tank or relocate things if it did.

The only other thing you need to do is sort the fuel pump for the FI, and this we did by using a fuel pump from a Trumpet. They are exactly the same dimensions as the oem one for the 583 and put out the same PSI as the oem Ducati FI pump. You can splice the Trumpet connector into the Ducati harness and all the pipes are the same size, so it fits right in place of the Ducati one. We picked a couple up off ebay for less than 15 quid each. Like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...tem=8032657955

I've got my camera here, so I'll post a couple of pics of the frame once I've resized them.

Nope, just fitted it to the frame to check the frame wouldn't need chopping before sending it away for powder coating.

Once it's back we'll fully fit the engine and get it running, but I'm sure it will be fine :D

antonye 25-Jan-2006 18:47

Here's the 620 engine in the 583 frame. You can see that there's enough room to clear the cross brace at the front, but it fits!

paynep 25-Jan-2006 21:55

Thanks Antony, I was wondering about the 900 bolt myself.

I sorted my pump by buying a complete tank, removing all the internals and flogging the bare tank to break even! Although I fully expect the tank to finish ahead of its internals..........

Looks great Ant - your bike is finished!!

Reckon the weight saving will be worth 5 seconds a lap ;)

I expect it'll finish ahead of the rest of the bike as well!
