851 fuel tank

If you do want one try calling Gowanloch in Oz, they are much cheaper. I got mine from there and it's unmarked, brand new and the biggest bonus is that including import duty I still paid less than Ceepeedee's starting price...
good hunting

Neil,

There are some massive bargains on the Gowanloch site......the Marvic 888 wheels for a start!.......Whatcha doin with the 851 now?

errrm - good question, I think it's a case of what isn't being done, I think that the only part left from the original rebuild will be the frame. Should be interesting when she's complete.
I'll drop you a line when there's more to take a look at & put the kettle on if you like.
cheers

I have just got my self a carbon fibre tank from Gowenloch, a bargin. The paint job is excellent. and it comes with carbon fibre air box bits. There is a bit of fitting to do but. Spacers for throttle bodies, heat shilding has to be fitted and the seat has to modified. Temp sender has position but the air pressure sensor needs to be relocated. Also you need to fit fuel line dowels into the tank. there are two holes, one on either side of the tank. They are threaded with a 1.5 mm pitch and its an 18mm hole. I am getting some machined up. I have yet to wressle with the fuel cap issue. Anyone know the simple answer?

jgriff 08-Feb-2006 04:19

Oops M20 x 1.5 not 18mm. Just read the other post.

The solution for the filler cap is to speak with www.sandbarcomposites.co.uk (Nigel) they make a really nice carbon unit, I've just received and fitted mine - it looks the dogs doodahs...
I'd thought of machining up some reducer inserts myself - as then you can use the still available 748R type plastic connectors. I'm still hoping for some OE fitment stuff but I'm getting a bit cheesed off with calling Duc specialists around the world to be told that they don't have em'.
Oh yeah don't forget that if you make your own there is a need for the fuel return side to have a non-return valve in the unit !
What have you used / got hold of for the breather pipe and valve ?
cheers

I was at the bike shop yesterday looking at stuff. The breather pipe will just atttach on to little pipe coming out the lh top of the tank and in line will be a little aluminium machined-up check valve. Although you have to watch them. I has a valve jam on my Hailwood tank on my S2 and the tank got really fat on eng shut down. Then the garage filled with mist. Very entertaining! Of coarse I was standing in the middle of it try to open the fuel cap to vent it. Lucky I put my smoke out seconds before.

jgriff 08-Feb-2006 14:36

Just been to sandbarcomposites. Mmmm the tank only cost AU$710

851neil 08-Feb-2006 18:26

yup you guys are spoilt rotten down there - Gowanloch say they don't have any carbon caps - that's why I bought the one from sandbar...the stock alloy cap just doesn't look right, believe you me when you fit a carbon one you'll understand it's well worth it !!

jgriff 09-Feb-2006 01:26

I'll have to start saving up the change from the milk

Rob B 09-Feb-2006 20:26

Neil,

I had am aero ally cap made for my carbon tank. Is your tank an 888 or 851 shape?

Rgds, Rob

Rob B 09-Feb-2006 20:28

P.S. What did you use for a gasket?

851neil 09-Feb-2006 22:53

my tanks an 851 shape, and I used the OE rubber gasket between the filler and tank - seems Ok.

Rob B 10-Feb-2006 15:54

Is that the big gasket with the depressed centre, mine is a Paso part (maybe othere too)

Rgds, Rob

851neil 10-Feb-2006 19:00

that's the one - big gasket with the depressed centre

Rob B 11-Feb-2006 13:52

Neil,

I'd like another of those seals if you have a source. Here's a couple of pics of the Newton cap. Not as Bling as carbon, but lockable.

Rgds, Rob

851neil 11-Feb-2006 16:28

I've a spare in the parts box - which I'm hanging onto for my spare tank, but I'll ask if there are any more gathering dust.
cheers

Neil
