Ducati reliability! |
Hello I satarted to read the Pronto :puzzled: glad we are back. regards TopiToo |
what pronto??:(?? |
Im not having a dig but maybe someone from the web team could advise why the site goes down on a regular basis. It would be nice to know thats all. Thanks |
Morning, Not sure what caused it the site to go last night (I was out last night down the pub). What was the site doing? To many connections or something else? [Edited on 4-2-2006 by Flanks] |
I must admit i find this occurs regularly. I remember it happening a while back as well, although some new singing and dancing bit was supposed to of sorted it? |
It was v v slow Flanks, from aqbout 4,30ish, with people (even on superdooper fast broadband) making double postings, then the site just 'hang' for over 10 mins at about 5pm (the time of day when I read before home time from work). I just gave up on it as the full screen wouldnt come up. C |

Theres your bleeding problem, YOU WENT OUT! Rule 167b (sub section d,paragraph 6) states "there must be one memberof the webteam on the bike AND pedalling at all times" :P Butch |

Problem before was too many people looking at the site at the same time, the server has been adjusted to allow 250 people. Another problem we have had, is our ISP had a power failure causing the site and server to close down. So, hence me asking what it was doing, as neither TP or Eamonn have left a mail to say the site needed re-booting. |

You not heard, Friday nights is for the Commie Manager to pedal :P |

Thank you! Next time, do some work! Might have saved the site! :P |

The problem that we have been experiencing (more frequently over the last 6 months) is in the definition of how many simultaneous connections the website can handle. Up until 14-Jan this setting was 100 simultaneous connections - I then increased it to 250 connections, which still doesn't appear to be enough! I've now increased it to 350 - let's see how that goes! It's a bit like setting up carbs - lots of options to change but you need to find just the right one and turn it just the right amount. Too little and it has no effect, too much and it all goes haywire :) If there's anyone who has experience of tuning mySQL4 with Apache on Redhat Linux 9, please get in touch with the webteam. Any assistance will be greatfully received. |
Yeah, what father of the webteam said :) |
Why don't you all just admit it! Someone forgot to put a half-crown in the meter before clearing off down the pub  |

Butch. |
Last person i heard saying half a crown, was my grabddad, and he's 90 odd! |
Time has come to spend some of the clubs funds on more suitable and effective software. I am sure this point will be raised and supported at the AGM on the 18th. Although only about 100 or so members of the club post on here regularly, anyone who takes the time to go out and meet the members knows that there is a huge audience that watches this board on a daily basis. The fact that Eamonn has had to increase the instantaneous connection level to 350 proves this is true. It is a great shop window for the club and a potentially good source of advertising revenue. It deserves a better platform than XMB Henners |
Ooops, think there may still be problems:puzzled: It is taking at least ten times as long to get each page to load today. P'haps everyone is trying to catch up with the posts missed yesterday? Moley:rodent: PS Only have limited computer knowledge but happy to help if I can:D |
Flanks - 'Grabddad' :o:o do you have some issues you want to discuss. Anyways, seems like the MT need to spend some dosh on an upgraded system. I can highly recommend one of these but we'd probably have to put membership charges up by 10,000%:lol: ; ![]() |
As ever in a Club with limited financial resources, in terms of membership income, the MT have to view how we can obtain the most benefit for all of the membership for each £1 that we spend. As stated earlier in this thread, the website is used by a minority of members and as such investment should be looked at in that light. As part of the annual budgeting process the MT have already looked at our expenditure on the website and recommendations have been made. You should start to see changes from March onwards. |

:puzzled: And the problem we have has exactly what to do with xmb? And you are suggesting spending more money on a facility that does not benefit the majority of DSC members? There is already a budget proposal on spend for the website for 2006. There will be a discussion on the website under AOB. |
Hmmmmm.... I couldn't get on for a while last night too....Firefox browser wouldnt even load the home page and just kept saying 'connection reset' ??? But if the server was down too - only to be expected I guess. I agree that its looking like a solution is needed - but disagree with Henners abit about moving away from XMB. The problems to me seem more to be more to do with the hosting than the software (???) - also if the search functions on here were a little bit better than present that would be good enough for me, I remember having a mootch on the XMB website and noted the DSC implementation seem to be a few releases old. (have a look on their forum sometime): http://forums.xmbforum.com/ I like our website and find it freshingly easy to navigate and fast loading (when it does  ) - by comparison have alook at the up-north website which is visually great but I find a bit difficult to navigate - or the ducati.ms site which is again superb but the way the forum threads work simply makes my head ache. Lets keep the site simple - PLEASE !!! Frazzled Frank [Edited on 4-2-2006 by Iconic944ss] |

You'll find that whilst xmb offers a lot of other forum softs ones like vbulletin are much much easier to use for web admin, need little work, provide excellent support and release valuable webteam time. the problem might well be server but more than likely its also to do with stuff like XMB doing refresh searches in todays posts thus keeping connections open and queries on the server database. Thread views are easily changed as vbulletin offers many user definable options, check the User CP edit options panels to see what you can change and how you view the sites using it. There is no simple solution but given that the webteam do this in their spare time whatever is decided upon should fit their needs first and foremost, it shouldn't be a full time job for them keeping the site running. Cost is hardly a factor, £100 for the software or £35 a year if you lease it. |

Its that bit that pi$$es me off:mad: Too many fre loaders while paid up member can't get a look in.:flame: |
this site's up and down like a manic depressive. |

Or a scrubbers nickers:D |
When I got in last night I saw that it was down and it was simply unavailable - not the usual too many connections error. I rebooted it but as I was heading straight back out I didn't do anything else. Please bear with us in the short term - we are on the job. |

Shouldn't that be pish;) |

Well finish each other off and get the site working ;) |
Just to add my twopennyworth, I am a fully paid up member and have not bitched once about the site being down although I have asked for the reason. I would not renew my membership if the site was not at least as good as it is now as it is the only benefit I get from my annual subscription. I could easily take a more selfish view and be a forum member without paying. So if it is necessary to invest in new software or hardware to make the site more stable and the cost was in proportion to the benefit it would get my vote. |

It did it again to me around 1700hrs.....................:( |
Yes me to 5pm same as yesterday but this time it just went on a real slow down :saint: |
At 17:20 today I did a full server backup, created a new Y2004 archive, moved nearly 35,000 postings into the archive area, reset the system to allow up to 350 connections, and to finish off restarted the database and server systems. That's why you couldn't get into the system at about the 17:00-17:20 timeframe. For those that were interrupted, I apologise. I normally try to do the backups and reorganisations early in the morning (before 8am) but tomorrow I have other commitments that meant it was better to sort it late this afternoon before the 'evening rush' |
Hello Eamonn Just want to say thankyou for all your efforts. regards TopiToo |
I wouldnt want to be regarded as moaning about this. I guess we all just want to get on when we can, i wouldnt even begin to understand how or why it works or doesnt.....:borg: I know managing the site can be somewhat difficult..........to say the least, well done by the way! [Edited on 4-2-2006 by andyb] |
Eamonn and the Webteam I am not in any way levelling the issues ordinary messageboard users have with the board at you, however, it is clear that the current software is not webteam friendly and I will do all in my power to get funding to improve matters for you and the members of this club. |
