Ducati dealer and servicing went to look at a used 749(3k,53 reg) at an 'official' Ducati store yesterday.the bike was due a full 2 year service LAST october. I have agreed to pay the full asking price(which was very good) but they are only going to do a belt change and oil/filter change. I am willing to buy it if the full service is done, otherwise I will walk. I am a bit suprised that a ducati dealer will sell a bike that is 4 months overdue a service ! Are they that hard up !! Any thoughts ?? |
I'd imagine if you pointed out any service related problems may come straight back at them under warranty and it might be in their best interests to do a full service now, also giving you more confidence in their customer service and what to expect from them in the future etc. Failing that walk away,if I'm reading your post correctly its priced at £3000?,if so that seems a tad on the 'too good to be true' side of things, has it been written off or something?,time for some searching questions methinks.:puzzled: |
no sorry,thats 3000 miles on the clock,its up for £5000. |
are they just someone who sells ducati's, or an official authorised dealer? If they havent serviced it - and wont do prior to sale, just get your walking shoes on. Then also name & shame them here Rosso |
is it your local dealer Rosso ? |
Get the full service done before you pay up mate then at least your first year should not have any surprises. |

ill second that !! /ian |
This makes me angry :flame: If its an official dealer, they should do the full 2 year service if its due. They wouldn't honor a warranty claim if the bike was under ducati warranty if you didnt get the servicing done, what are they going to honor if they have to pay not ducati. I would walk, how will you know if it's really been done?? the salesman may agree to do the full service in the end, but they could just change the belts and oil? if they are even thinking about just doing the bare minimum, they probably wouldnt even do that, and you'd never know. You are paying a higher price from a dealer so you should get the service that goes with it. If they are argueing about even getting the bike up to spec BEFORE you hand over the cash, what service are you going to get AFTER - Bugger all! the 03 749 had plenty of problems, and getting one out of warranty, you are taking a gamble. get a REAL warranty. |
I am speaking with them today so I will update later. "I would walk, how will you know if it's really been done?? the salesman may agree to do the full service in the end, but they could just change the belts and oil? if they are even thinking about just doing the bare minimum, they probably wouldnt even do that, and you'd never know." Yes Barnsey, that had occured to me as well !! |
Service book says 12,000 or 2 years. Replace belts, Coolant, Brake / Clutch fluid, Front fork oil + all the items of a 6000 service |
see here for list of what SHOULD be done... http://www.motorapido.co.uk/ducati%20servicing.php More to the point : buying a new Ducati should be a good, fun and enjoyable experience, you should be looking forward to picking it up not worrying if you are being stitched up. Go to a good dealer, you MUST be able to trust who you are buying it off. I have had a nasty experience with a dealer who ignored my warranty claim (on a Yam by the way) and thinking back on it, I knew it would happen and was stupid to buy from them. best of luck. |
As Noel Edmond would say " deal or no deal ?" I said no deal. And I qoute " due to the low mileage(3300) it does not need a full 2 year service,we can do a few extra things for you but at your cost" I would not feel happy buying a bike and riding it if since october 2004,all that had been done is a belt and oil/filter change. This was my first experience with this dealer, and my last.I am sure that they have plenty of satisfied customers in the past and good luck to them.I am suprised at how little they really cared about getting my hard earned cash. p.s. didn't even get a free coffee when I visited ! Will name and shame later. |
Tough choice, especially when you have your heart set on a new bike, but well done, stick to your guns and you'll always get what you want. |

Well if it's a 53 plate then the bike is 2 years old and is due it's 2 year service. Ducati servicing is mileage AND time dependant which any Ducati dealer should know. I suppose a 3k mile bike might not actually need a full 12K/2 Year service but Ducati wrote the servicing rules so you'd expect a dealer to honour them. |
plenty more 749's around - the attitude stinks - of course it needs a full service before you pick it up. not only is it 2 years old, but it has been sitting around not being used, which is not always a good thing.Good on-ya for sticking to your guns and letting your head rule your heart. My 748 had 3,500mls on it when i bought it (private sale)and it was conditional on being serviced at an agreed ducati specialist (we agreed rosso corse) and i got to check with them/keep the bill etc etc.....aaahhhh peace of mind-good to have when blatting about having a good time. |

And if your average Joe Bloggs didn't get it serviced according to Ducati guidelines then I guess you'd be on your own come warranty time as well. Good on yer Rosso. WRT name and shame - don't think you'll get away with slanderous(?) stuff, just suffice to say there's a bike in xxx which I declined. |
The dealer I decided not to buy from was Riders of Bristol. I popped into Motorapido on the way home, totally different atmosphere, helpful and they are always full of excellent advice. If something comes along then I would not hesitate to buy a bike from there. There we go rant over !! the search continues...... |
Had a couple of dealings with Moto Rapido and I only have one bad thing to say about them .... they are 162 mile away :( Still worth the drive to deal with true enthusiasts :D |
my bike is in there at the mo being serviced...highly recomended:roll::burn: tel them what you want and they will find it.... |
Interesting I got both my dukes from Riders and they were new and never had any problem with riders yet. Suprised they would say that always seemed to stick to Ducatis servicing with mine. My 748s has been there for nearly a year now since i got my S4r! Wonder if that has had its 2 year service:o:o before some one buys it!!! |
I guess you've had a look at 3X Motorcycles just outside Ringwood (fairly big official dealer) ........... and it may be worth calling into Two Four Performance (small Ducati specialist where I had my 748 looked after very well, until I moved to France last year), 8a Hightown Road Ringwood Hampshire BH24 1NW (Tony Forster) 01425 478555 |
yes I popped into 2-4-italia,very nice 748s in there. nothing much at 3x either I have done a deal with boggy 8 on the forum for a 749s with termi's and it is £250 cheaper than the one at riders ! glad I waited now:sing: |
I have posted this before but Riders took a patch of paint off of my frame and wouldnt repair it. They offered not to penalise me if I traded it in for a new bike. As I had spent £800 on the service it left me a very foul taste in my mouth and I dont think I would be happy to go there again.:puzzled: |
Noticed yesterday that Woods of Abergele are doing 749/999`s at the usual 0%, but are also chucking in a Termi system, OR 1 years free servicing and a 6k service aswell. Good deal imo. |
