not impressed

well got the bike out for abit sunday every thing seemed fine until i came across 2 lads on tl1000s and a gsxr600 , opened it up and the tl1000 went lashing passed me and ? he was gone,i just pulled away from the 600 ,, ive a 2001 996 bip with 45mm termis and chip but nothing else (standard gearing) what can i do to get more GO!!! AND DONT SAY A 999R

TP 06-Feb-2006 19:30

How fat is your wallet?

Cheapest way to get drive is to change your gearing. Then a lightened flywheel etc ... then you you need to start spending money!

Fordie 06-Feb-2006 19:37

Depending when your bike was last serviced, things like throttle sensor's and various other's need to be spot on and can make a huge differance to how the bike performs. The gearing on the 996 (Standard ) is fairly high compared to other bikes , dropping a tooth from the front sprocket will help to increase acceleration. 4D

... did you remember to smile and wave at the two of them as they pleaded for their lives to the local speed-tax enforcement officers (cops) ? :frog:

bet they still both wanted a go on the 996

Nigel C 06-Feb-2006 20:14

You could always not bite and let them go, knowing you'll arrive at your destination in style and on a bike people will notice when you park up :D

weeksy2 06-Feb-2006 23:04

To be honest mate, if you're having trouble with them two bikes, it's you who need addressing not the bike. If they can leave you like that.... you need to learn what the rev limiter and the throttle stop are.

bradders 06-Feb-2006 23:10

as weeksy says.....thrash it harder!! On the road, I would have thought 996 would keep up with most things at failry sane speeds

you know me mate.. i always tell it how i see it... I've seen Fil2 sticking with Gixer 1000 K1's both pinned on his 748S. Not saying i'm the best myself, but it can be done if you crack it on.

Jools 06-Feb-2006 23:21

Not many jap bikes go past me and Glyn either and we're on 83 bhp ST2's.

You just have to thrash the tits off em

bigkev 06-Feb-2006 23:29

trust me i can trash it with the best of them , well over 150 plus when started to pull away from the gixer 6 and i just could not match the tl1000s top end,, the little horns came out and that was it game on, it could be just as simple as he got the jump on me , you never know i could come across them again

twpd 06-Feb-2006 23:31

A 996 Bip should have no probs with a TL altho, the Bip is horribly overgeared for something like 180+ in top.

weeveetwin 06-Feb-2006 23:35

Just how "big" are you bigkev? Power to weight ratio would come into the equation!

45mm Termis? My teeny weeny 888's got a 50mm exhaust. Surely a bigger displacement engine would need better breathing? Maybe its being stifled.

bigkev 06-Feb-2006 23:41

i think it could be that the bikes just over geared , could change the f/sprocket , i dont need mega top end rush just more go in the mid range

PDL 06-Feb-2006 23:58

Thrash it in each gear, on straights and corners.

The TL is pants, it doesn't go round corners and my 748 is a quick up to 100 as a gixer6, so whats the problem?

You are riding on the wrong roads, stay off the motorways.
:P

andys 900ss 07-Feb-2006 00:02

Hmmm, strange one this.

I had trouble keeping up with Dukerob on a very long and bumpy road on my R1 last summer when he went chasing a GSXR, and he has very tall gearing on his 996, although it has been breathed on.

Red mist on the road is way risky (forget the law breaking, I'm talking about critical blunders). We all do it but hey, enough of the ride safe stuff.

More importantly, slim down to 8stone, lower the gearing (one tooth front sprocket), lightweight clutch (big difference), 45mm to 50mm or full 50mm termis plus chip, pipercross air filter, loose unsprung weight (magnesium/titanium/carbon), AP or brembo billet brakes, properly set up suspension, lighter flywheel, unclog fuel filter, diablo corse tyres, hunker down and don't drop below 6K revs. Worked for me.....

Monty 07-Feb-2006 00:22

Change the front sprocket to 14tooth-best £18 you'll ever spend-and keep the revs over 6500, the TL will wonder which way you went.

Glyn 07-Feb-2006 00:26

get an st2
if any one goes past you its
"well its only an 83 bhp st2, what do you expect"
but when yo come across a pack of il4's on one of your fav twistys and leave um for dead you know it feels good!!

RCA 07-Feb-2006 01:03

borrow my bike next time.

rockhopper 07-Feb-2006 09:40

Wouldn't a stock 996 be about the same power as an early TL? Its certainly got loads more than a late one, they were struggling to touch 100hp at the end.

Chrisiball 07-Feb-2006 13:28

TL

Went out with a lad from work with a TLR last summer, and even when we stopped for a drink, he sed feck me im shocked theres not much in them! and mines a 748R, once into the midrange my bike easily hung on to the TL, all the way up to flat out in top, on a private road, of course!

spinoli1 07-Feb-2006 13:31

I owned a TL1000S for 5 years before converting to the Red Side.

I spent a bit of time and a bit of cash sorting it – Full Akro, PC, Ohlins rear/K-Tech front, etc, etc.

I passed many more Dukes on the TLS than passed me (road and track)(and many ZX9s, R1s, Gixxer1Ks).

My 996S was certainly no more Powerful than the sorted TL (Dynoed 119 rwhp).

A stock 996 was toast unless the rider was better than me (plenty are).

The sorted TL also went round corners just fine, although not with the ultimate poise and ability of the 996S or my current 998.

I’m very happy indeed to be on a Duc now, and the development of the 998 is coming along nicely – it’s just that the TLS is a much better bike than people realise.

Finally nothing wheelies like a TL.

Gixxer 6 – ptaah!!!

Comes down to 1 thing, its the rider not the ride. . . . .

Mr C 07-Feb-2006 15:32

I have a mate with an R1 and on my old 996 bip there was nothing in it really apart from on long straights when he'd have the edge, Even now on my S4 upto about 130 he's not leaping away.
How fast do you actually want to go on the Roads?

Agreed, you will end up in the wall. Save it for the track. Anyone can go fast in a straight line, does'nt take any talent or balls.

Webcore 08-Feb-2006 01:10

dst1 08-Feb-2006 06:58
