Best place to buy a Plasma
 

Looking to buy a Panasonic TH-42PV500 Plasma looked on Kelkoo and Pricerunner.
Any other suggestions or Members involved in this type of buisness as I would prefer to use someone through this site.

Does it have to be a plasma?

I recently bought a 32in LCD that is HD ready from www.cleardragon.com

£1489 for a 42in LCD with 8ms response time ...

I got my rear projection tv from www.empiredirect.co.uk were about 400 cheaper than anyhwhere else at the time.

Richer sounds now do them to and best place for 5 year gurantee is johnlewis prices are good to when u consider how much a 5 yr gurantee be else where. they mark em up wrong to instore to :lol my dad got a 32" lcd panny for 1000 with 500 of as they marked it up wrong whoooops!

The trouble with all these 'HD Ready' plasma/lcd is that the pixel resolution is nothing like true HD. HD means 1080(h)x1920(w) where as a lot of the displays struggle to reach 720(h).

But... it looks like that is about to change. Philips have launched this lcd tv which truely is HD. Other manufacturers can't be far behind.

Heres very good value for money big screen and not much more deeper than a plasma either unless ur going to wall mount your plasma do u really need it that thin?

Its a rear projection based on an lcd inside where as my tosh has a crt tv inside projected on to screen. If mine goes poof one day this will be my next tv.

As for me, HD ready LCD up to about 37" .... would not go the plasma route.

Thats what I bought my girlfriend for xmas! Its a cracking telly. We needed something big as the sofas are a fair way from the tv. And we had no interest in wall mounting it but as you say its not much deeper than a plasma. In fact everone that visits assumes it is a plasma! Picture quality to me is excellent, but I have had crap tellys for years.

Nice one Martin It looks fab my Crt rear projection has a really good natural picture compared to plasmas and lcd's and for me they are much better value for money, only wish mine was HD ready :( then again it is about 3 yrs old :lol::lol:

When we looked at large TVs a few years back we ended up discounting rear projectors 'cos of the cost of lamp replacement (and the fact that they were all bleedin' huge...). Is that still an issue with LCD rear projectors? What about large LCD screens?

I had a plasma that lasted 18 months. So I would'nt recommend them.
But we did get insurance, and once the engineer failed to fix it, they offered us another plasma. Which we were a bit weary of, so we put the extra money up, and got this puppy:

Go for an LCD, Plasma`s are old skool!

Avoid Plasma, screen burn is a problem and can be permanent, the life expectancy isnt all that great and if they have been dropped or banged in the warehouse they wont work!

Go for an LCD, they are getting bigger all the time and the picture quality is better than a plasma.

We have a 42" Toshiba Plasma at work ( a re-badged Panasonic). It was fine for the first year then had 2 major faults in the next 9 months. Each required a new board at £500 a time. If it packs up again it's going in the skip.
And as said above they do suffer badly from screen burn if you're not careful. Watch out for digital channels with hard icons in the corner of the screen.

Im sure there is no lamp in mine as its a small crt tv projected onto the back of screen I believe. What you say about lamps is true of stand alone projectors where you project an image on to front of screen or wall, in these the lamps do have so many hours running time.

Over the years rear projection tvs have got less depth to them mines about 400mm deep for a 42" when a 36" crt was so deep almost as it was wide:o:o

As Stox said, plasma do have problems, LCD is the way.
Also save your money and buy a LG, they make the tv's for all the big brand companys and according to some late night program I watched a while ago they are way ahead in the HD technology race!

Bought my 42" Hitachi PD3000E Plasma (? think that was the ref) from Digital Direct over 2 years ago, best price available at the time.

Excellent product and absolutely no problems with it.

Regarding Digital Direct, found them very easy to deal with, delivered to the door offloaded and unpacked to make sure all was ok, and they negociated on prices for leads and brackets - which aren't cheap.

ide love one but with our jack (16 months old) hes all ways sticking up the screen on our tv so i got to wait a bit.:eureka:

Thanks for all the advice I know crap all about LCDs/Plasmas,I have an LG with my computer and its brill for games.
all ive gone on so far is advice from mates and leafing through What Plasma.
Ive been to see both LCD and Plasma in a independant outlet I went in looking at buying an LCD but when playing a DVD back to back with the same film the PLasma was by far the superior picture the blacks were really deep and clear of edge fade and there was no blurring in fast moving scenes the depth of silvers etc made metal look as though you could touch it.
So Im not sure which way to go and I'll do a bit more research
