Getaway Rider\'s Blown 748 Just how common a problem is this grub screw problem:puzzled: Did'nt like to hijack Getaway Riders thread so i started this one. Am a little concerned about what ive been reading as i have just put a deposit on 748 to keep the multistrada company in the garage. As this is a private sale i dont have the luxury of extended warranty so could well do with out blown engine problems........ |
it was loose back on my 916 once when Alan at AJRacing took it apart. |
What happens, apparently, is that there is an ally plug that screws into the end of the crankshaft to seal the crank oilway. It can start to unscrew itself through vibration or whatever and as it does the soft ally gets lathed away by the harder outer races on the crank bearings. Eventually, the plug gets worn so thin that it drops out or pops out under the pressure of the oil and then all the oil just gushes out back into the sump without going through the crank or conrod oilways. There are write up about it on http://www.moto-one.com.au/performance under the ST2 hi-comp thread and the 888 thread The cure is simply to use that blue loctite (?) or whatever it is you use when you never want to unscrew the part again, trouble is the crankcases have to be split to do it. Nelly or someone who really knows what they're on about might be along in a minute [Edited on 16-2-2006 by Jools] |
Not a lot i can do about it now.......Have paid a deposit and funds are already somewhere between my bank and his in a fibreoptic cable (not sure how they manage to stuff all that money down a small cable ;) ) The guy was happy to drop the price by £300 to allow for a belt service which i intended doing before i rode it which is why i am collecting it in a van. What to do :puzzled::puzzled: As soon as i get it i will put it into my local "Veloce" for the belt and shims service, is there anything else at this stage i could do to check for this fault. Or am i just being a big girl  Cheers for any much wanted opinions or thoughts. Bike details are :- 53 Plate 2002 model 748E 6400 Miles Last belt service Aug 2004 @ approx 5000 Miles, carried out at P & H Motorcycles, Crawley which is where this guy bought it from.;) [Edited on 16-2-2006 by Tantrum992] |
Really wouldn't worry yourself about it mate... Its not that common a fault...if it was there would be a recall issue on it as it definately has saftey ramifications. If you worry about things like that, then were do you stop...have my wheels got a crack in 'em...are by discs about to explode...is a new belt faulty and about to let go...is the vertical piston about to blast through the cycliner head and take my family jewels with it???:puzzled: Seriously...don't waste anymore of your time thinking about it. |
