For those Mallory fans....

Blatantly nicked this off Throttlemonkeys, one of the guys brothers has taken some snaps of the new chicane at Gerrards... :puzzled::puzzled::o I'm not a fan of Mallory it's a bit Mickey Mouse, but I doubt I'd ever go back there now looking at these...

Enjoy :(

doogalman 16-Feb-2006 20:12

Why oh why can't they leave thing as they are meant to be. AAAAAAhhhhhhh

Loz 16-Feb-2006 20:45

Is this someone's way of saying, "No more trackdays at Mallory"?
The track looks awful in the pics, more suited to karting.

</crosses off Mallory from list of tracks to try>

Jools 16-Feb-2006 21:37

IMHO the Devil's Elbow and Gerrards (the old one) were the only reasons to go to Mallory - down to one reason now, is it enough? Hmmmmmmm......NO

weeksy2 17-Feb-2006 09:05

I was talking to a British Superstock rider today who rode it on Weds and says it's the worst thing in the world. As bad as the chicane at Silverstone.

I don't forsee me ever riding there again.

Which tbh is a shame.

Chris Wood 17-Feb-2006 10:07

ACU test day on Wed 22nd March for DD.....

I'll report back directly!

My two local tracks - Silverstone and Mallory - both screwed by chicanes, at this rate I'll be forced to go to Rockingham.:o

Ray 17-Feb-2006 11:11

Rocki is gonna be a housing estate soon, now owned by a housing developemnt company who plan to put 5,000 houses next door. The Rocki CEO has just left, and BMW won't be running their performance driving school there this year.

In the short term there could be a few more dates available due to the loss of the BMW business.

As for Mallory, on paper it's always looked like a small cart track but once you're out there it seems surprisingly roomy, bit like a tardis. Been there once a year with another club for the past two years and had a pretty good day really.

I really like Mallory, I've done loads of days there and raced many times. Sure there are bits that are a little quaint, but that's part of the character of the circuit, mix it with the friendly people, great canteen etc and you can have a brilliant day.

I agree with the comment about it looking like a crap little circuit, but I think once you ride it, I would actually rather do Mallory than Brands Indy and they're roughly the same length, (although hugely different in price!!!)

A BIG 'however'.

What the flip have they done? I understand why they need to do it, but then again WHY?

What a waste of a brilliant corner and one of the main attractions of going to Mallory. It looks horrible, but I have to reserve judgement until I get there. I was horrified by the new chicane at Cadwell, but it's ok and you get used to it very quickly and it's another place to overtake in a race. Silverstone is utter crap, but other chicanes, say at Oulton are ok. So let's ride it and see what it's like before writing off Mallory altogether.

The consensus on Weds was that there will be a lot more spectating there this season anyway...

Carnage was the phrase used.

WeeJohnyB 17-Feb-2006 12:19

agree steve....looks like a nightmare for racing, can you imagine the first lap into that chicane:(

Well the scarey thing is... it's going to be like that into there... then the same into Edwinas too.... although by then there may only be half a pack... !!!!

There's some discussions of Clubs not using it as it's primarily for BSB and the time it adds to the lap. Who knows though.

the three problems i see.

1. the corner itself
2. the exit onto the straights(highside)
3. Does it really lower the entry speed into Edwinas ?

desmojen 17-Feb-2006 13:51

Classic knee jerk reaction this, both by Mallory/ACU, and now by riders looking at the pictures!
Too many accidents at Edwinas last year in BSB. How do we solve this I wonder? I know, slow it down. Isn't Edwinas slow enough already? Are/were those accidents caused by speed? I don't think so. How many accidents at Edwinas were on other than the first few laps? Not many.
To answer Steve's points,
1. No problem with the corner itself, it's another Gooseneck and will surely sort the men from the boys.
2.Highside? No more of an issue at this corner than at any other.
3. It will reduce the speeds leading up to Edwinas massively. Even with my limted talent I was charging hard in 5th gear on the 748 coming into the braking zone at Edwinas. As it is now, instead of doing well over 100mph on the exit of Gerrards you will now be doing 20-40mph out of a chicane in a low gear.

The thing that annoys me about it is that it has merely relocated the problem. Anyone who has raced can easily imagine the potential carnage of 30+ riders hitting that corner so soon after the start. I am at an absolute loss to see how any sane individual can say that this is safer than it was before.
Surely the answer was merely to provide a bit more space around the entry to Edwinas, maybe loosen the corner a bit, widen it a bit perhaps. There's ample space at the back of the paddock area to enable plentiful run off in the braking area to avoid Kiyo style mishaps.
For the most part, imo, the rest of the incidents are an unavoidable product of putting racers near each other!

Steve M 17-Feb-2006 14:09

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh more poxy chicanes, why do they keep doing this? The exit of Gerards has never seemed that bad to me - no worse than the exit of any other fast corner, if they really wanted to improve things they should have improved the run off at the Esses and left the track as it was. Even the cost couldn't have been much different doing that than making 2 POXY chicanes.

Did I mention I don't like chicanes.

Doubt I could eat a whole one though

domski 17-Feb-2006 14:42

So you go off the start, through the chicane, to the next chicane, through another fast chicane to the hairpin and back through another chicane to the start?

Great!

Where do I sign the HSE form?
