My running and leaking bike...

Here we are... bike is running (thanks Alan, you did a great job :) ) so now is the time to fix the leaks

The previous owner told me I would have to change the seal between the engine and the LH side cover (ignition cover??). Some people told me I don't have to use a seal there, something like "silycon paste" would do the job...

So my question is what's the exact name of what I looking for and where can I find some (online would be great...:D ).

Cheers
Tonio

domski 23-Feb-2006 11:46

You need some KY Jelly ;)

AK 23-Feb-2006 11:51

you twit!

Alan has some stuff in the van that could have done that for you.

Muppet!:P

Tonio600 23-Feb-2006 11:55

ok, I don't mind having the van as an extra... How much for it?

phil_h 23-Feb-2006 13:50

You do make I larf antoine

Before they take the p*ss some more, the stuff is called silicon rubber 'instant gasket'.
Not so many places sell it now (I've had trouble getting it from halfords) but most motorbike shops sell it.
There is a similar-looking kind of gasket compound that is non-setting that you dont want to get if you've never used instant gasket before.
I quite like the orange stuff myself, as I can see where I've been then ;)

Tonio600 23-Feb-2006 14:27

Cheers Phil, bought it :D

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MEWN%3AIT&rd=1

(please nobody tells me this one is the only one not suitable  )

Clear Instant Gasket 40g tube (silicone)
----------------------------------------------------

Brand New Solvol Clear Instant Gasket (40g weight).

Main features include:

* Replaces conventional gaskets (excluding cylinder heads).
* Withstands temperatures from –60ºC to +260ºC.
* Resists all lubricating, transmission and cooling fluids.
* Insulates electrical parts.
* Skins rapidly but does not harden.

Ideal for car, bike, boat and garden equipment. Makes perfect gaskets for water pumps, sideplates, solenoid covers, relay covers, oil sump pans, rocker box covers, timing chain covers, water seals and engine gaskets.

Tonio600 23-Feb-2006 15:15

£3 inc. P&P

phil_h 23-Feb-2006 15:39

That sounds like the second type of stuff I described - note it says 'does not harden' and doesnt say 'silicone rubber'.
For a sidecover etc, it's best used as a gasket dressing, not a gasket replacement, as it only works best when it ends up as a very thin film - whereas a gasket is designed to take up some surface irregularities - and so is silicone rubber instant gasket.
As I said before, if you've never used gasket compund before, keep it simple and use silicone rubber.
(I know it didnt cost much, but if you decide to get something else, I'lll buy it off you, as I know you need all your dosh :D

Oh, shout if you need a translation of anything btw :D

Tonio600 23-Feb-2006 15:43

it says silicon in the title, is that no good? :D

I'm rubbish... So I should have bought the orange one?

Murray Mint 23-Feb-2006 16:38

I think what tonio and the description is trying to say is that the compound will not set into a solid rock hard state.

Tonio600 23-Feb-2006 16:45

which is what we want isn't it?

domski 23-Feb-2006 16:48

Easiest thing to do is to try it, and it will work or it won't.

Tonio600 23-Feb-2006 17:11

yep

Murray Mint 23-Feb-2006 17:55

That's right Tonio that's what we want. Sorted.
