One for Nelly........ I think

Ive seen several mentions of 853 conversions from a 748.

Some questions on the subject :-

How big a job ?

Reliability issues ?

Additional service costs ?

Why do it ?

Any models that cant be converted ?

Bennefits ?

Cost ?

Can it go back to being a 748 ?

Cheers Simon

Several peeps are offering this now, Nelly being one.

Check out the sigma website for some really good info:

Big? - heads & barrels off
Reliability - Should be no difference in reliability or servicing
Why? - Nelly's 854 was out dragging a 996 on the motorway towards Assen last year.......
Models - ????
Benefits - see above and a big plus if your bike is clean & set up how you like it
Cost??? - dunno but if combined with having a service duemay slightly reduce costs overall
It's fully reversible
As for the other bits, Nelly can fill in the gaps

1. Big enough that Nelly should do it, not you
2. Should be just as reliable as a 748
3. Shouldn't be any more
4. To get more grunt than a 748 without losing the 748's revvy nature
5. I think all 748's can be converted
6. More grunt, keep the revs
7. Around the 2K mark
8. Yep, it's basically just overbored barrels and 94mm pistons, but you might have to get these as exchange parts
9. A job you could do yourself? Probably, but I would go for getting Nelly to do it.

I understand that it's just 916 barrels & some special pistons.

Had my 748s done about 2 years ago. Its a wicked conversion.
Sigma did the work. They did my mates 916 as well and I could keep with and most times leave his slightly on the road.

So worth it if you intend to keep the bike for a long period of time. Or its set up how you like it.

I have upgraded to a 996sps engine and bits at the moment but I am building the 853 into a track bike right now. Its simply too good an engine for me to let go.;)

How big a job ? not as bad as you'd think. Can get big if the crank needs balancing. Getting pistons that match stock weight is the key to preventing this.
Reliability issues ? shouldn't be any. the bottom end is pretty strong.
Additional service costs ? none really.
Why do it ? makes a great engine. 748 buzz with 916 grunt, or more if you spend further on gasflowing, cams etc ;)
A models that cant be converted ? No, it can be carried out on any of them really. The R makes a superb engine.
Benefits ? see "why do it"
Cost ? £1000 ish upwards depending on spec and if crank needs balancing etc.
Can it go back to a 748 ? Yes. If the crank is rebalanced due to new pistons, then it's a little more difficult.
A job you could do ? I can do it, yes

916 barrels/pistons were/have been used. 2 problems, the barrels are taller and need machining and the pistons are heavier requiring crank balancing.
Sigma's kit uses stock weight pistons, as did my kit. I'll probably not go the route of having any more pistons made as the cost, quantities etc. make it financially difficult having them sat on the shelf for some time.
I'd probably use Pistal pistons, or Sigmas kit.

I'm hoping to get the fuelling sorted on mine soon and see what it's really capable of producing. It had the legs on 999's at brands, but was only doing about 18mpg, the top end is very rich, so there could be more to come ;)
It's a bit more than just a set of big pistons though ;)

Tantrum992 02-Mar-2006 07:46

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm like the sound of this ;)

razz 02-Mar-2006 13:58

Why NOT to do it?
Bike is no longer "standard", so unless you pay to put it back before selling, you might have problems.
Using it on the road? Insurance company would need to be informed and might decline to insure it since its no longer standard. You might have to approach a specialist broker.

i had mine done by cjs performance, had a 853 kitted and chris used a bit of his magic and my bike is making 107bhp on the dyno compared to the sigma 853 making 104. im well happy with it, just waiting to get to silverstone next weekend to see what the difference is now its been properly fuelled.

i would recommend it to any 748 owner thats considering it
