Help ! Its not the Fork oil its the Forks ! Here I am stripping out my forks to get tonio going for cadwell and I find one leg has no damping - so strip down, new seal, all looks ok, and so I go to fill it up ... ah wait a minute ... got none of this modern runny fork oil :o My old stuff runs on 20 and 30 weight  I have a bit of 10, but not even enough for one leg  So - any recommendations before I raid the shops tomorrow or do I stick with what the book says - 380cc of 7.5 ? Phil you have some 7.5W coming your way courtesy of Shell. It is currently at Senna3's unit with little chance of you getting it before Cadwell unless you know someone who is passing by Oxford at some point this week. |
Hein Gerick do all sorts of oils in various weights. Postal might get something cheaper but it sounds like you need some 'Pronto' ! Sorry! F |

Fresh oil in - fork reassembled - still no damping !!!!!!!!! The damper assembly on these non-adjustable types doesnt seem to want to come out though, so I have no idea what to do next. Ideas needed urgently to get some forks on tonio's bike !!!!!!!!! |
Phill I spoke with maxton about a conversion being done on my forks and was told that i only had damping in one leg, i told them they were talking poop and did the work myself, There may have been somthing in what they said????? I have heard of aprillias having the damping in one leg only?? Glyn |
Cagiva mitos have a very similar fork and they only have dampin in one leg |
I've been told by a number of folk that the old marzocchis only have damping in one leg. Very very weird...... :puzzled::puzzled: |
Hypoid 90, but only use the bike on "HOT" days:lol: |
many of the Marzocchi legs have only damping on one side. |
Any bike I could borrow for Cadwell? :( |
I noticed this on mine! I thought that one leg was bu&&ered, but thought that it didn't really matter... sort of ish. PS i'm using 2.5W. Like water it is. |
Our RS250 has damping in one fork....we changed it to have the later, 'proper' forks....made sod all difference  |
Latest news from Maxton - they _can_ supply custom cartridges for 360+vat + labour ....... with 4-5 weeks lead time. More importantly ... they have found that there are all the variations that we have wondered about fitted by ducati over the years ... spring only on one side + damping only on the other springs both sides + damping only on one side or rebound one side + compression the other So this is yet another chapter in the book of 'how crap is the 600 spec' Oh - and the other thing that they have found is that the std fork seals are really tight and give bad stiction - making their cartridges seem as if they arnt working properly on a road bike. (not so bad on a race bike cos its worked harder) They cant fit alternative seals cos they are a ******* (correct use of technical term !) size, so they tried 'easing' them a bit and that worked until they leaked after about 500 miles ! Bloody glad all my bikes have Showas! I will delve into my Marzochistis and see what's inside tonight.... |
Interesting..... Both legs have dampers, each leg had the spring the opposite way up, the non-leaking leg had about 2 teaspoons of oil in it.... Anyway, now both legs are non-leaking, have 7.5w oil in to the correct level and appear to offer a modicum of damping.... :bouncy: Lucky me, eh :burn: |

I'm surprised they didn't mention a well-known little trick to ease stiction. You take some fine-grade wet & dry to the stanchion and gently crosshatch using a rotating up/down movement. This promotes a very very impeceptible oil loss which, keep the legs and seal lubricated. I did this to great effect on my SV650 racer. |
