what oil? what oil do i put in my 1999 748BP please? will find out what has been used in it, but any recommendations would be good. ta |
Mazola should do it, at the end of the season into the deep fat fryer and bobs your uncle. :frog: |
15W/50 fully synth. |
Lard for summer and 3 in 1 for winter. |
I use Motul 300V in mine. That's a 15/50 fully synth. Done me OK for the last 52000 miles. :) |
52000!!! on what? a 748 as your tag suggests? thats pretty stunning mileage... |
Motul 300V. My 996 did 27000 on it and would probably have done way more if some toerag hadn't nicked it..... |
Full synthetic and make sure you change it and the filter every 3k. |
sounds like Motul has a following...of at least two anyway. any real point spending out on Shell etc...i am presuming Motul is cheaper...though i know it to be a quality brand. 15/50...is that the recommended viscosity as opposed to 10/50? |
Actually, Motul is probably dearer. I'm sure Shell is fine too, but that's what I use. remfanuk> Yes. See March's Performance Bikes :) [Edited on 30-3-2006 by moto748] |
i subscribe to PB...what was in the March issue? |
Hi, Yes I use Motul aswell, the reason for the following having something to do with recomendations from a certain Mr. Hackett. They used to use it in all of the race bikes they prepared, (apparently even the ones that had Shell stickers on!) |
Shell Advance oil, as Ducati recommend. 600th post too, top banana. |
Always used Motul 300v myself and change it every 1000 miles. Motul oil comes from a different family of chemistry completley ( Ester based)and therefore starts from a whole other level to virtually everything else available. |
think silkolene do an ester based oil too actually...seem to remember reading somewhere that there are only 3 (?) manufacturers of "proper" fully synthetic oil on the market...though admittedly that was with regards to cars. silkolene was one...cant remember the others but, stuff like mobil 1 although a fully synthetic is not the real McCoy....anyone still awake??? sorry...just popped into my head that little lot... |
Hello I use silkolene 15/50 and change it every 3,000 miles, only because its available. Although sometimes it comes out the same colour:rolleye: Have tried 10/40, but that engine is sitting in the garage not going anywhere for now. I understand the 15/50 to be a thicker oil which is what I need to keep them rockers happy. regards TopiToo |
snap. I use the silkoline top oil, not cheep though. the motul is highly recommended also. the idea with the 15/50 is it sticks up around the top end a bit better. so there is some oil up where it matters from the off. the thinner the oil the more chance it will all run down to the sump much quicker. |
think 10/50 was used previously in my bike...can i top it up with 15/50? or will i have to wait until i change the oil next? ta. |

Probably about time you changed it I reckon...:o |
Hi remfanuk Amsoil is one of the others that use Ester technology and it has a massively high film strength. Hardly available in the uk though. I think Mobil 1 is only a highly refined hydrocrack ( normal oil ) A lot of oils sold as synthetic are actually just very highly refined versions of normal oil. |
so will it be okay to top up a 10/50 with a 15/50 if i cannot find 10/50? |

I am about to do an oil change and was going to use halfords synthetic 5/40 for a few hundred miles to flush any rubbish out of the system before changing to a better oil such as shell oil. Is it safe to use a 5w oil in a ducati for a short period? |
