Front sprocket stupid question maybe but I have removed the to sprocket retaining bolts and the retaining plate and the sprocket wont budge off the shaft is there anythin ia m missing here or is brute force required |
It should just slide off. I've never had a problem getting the sprocket off, except that ot quite a tight squeeze to clear the chain. I'd dribble some 3-in-1 oil or suchlike into the splines and try gently tapping it with a hide mallet or a big screwdriver handle. |
nope the chain is off and i expected the sprocket to do just as you say ie slide off |
Yep, should just slide off mate. Just be very careful when you do the bolts back up again when the new sprocket is on - they are like chocolate....I know this from experience/ineptitude. "Ooooh, I'll just nip it up a little bit mo......ah, f**k!......lol....:o |
so what would you do if it didnt just slide off like mine?! |
wd40? |
my first thought but doesnt seem to have helped |
Is there much in the way of corrosion etc. there? If there is it might need to soak in overnight mate, followed by what moto suggested - a bit of tapping to "crack" the crap that's built up in the area. Sorry can't help anymore than this fella. Jacko. [Edited on 31-3-2006 by JACKO748S] |
will soak it and hope! |
Yeah, go have a beer and try again in the morning! Good luck with it. Jacko (off to work in 45 minutes:mad: ) [Edited on 31-3-2006 by JACKO748S] |
screw some bolts back into the threads in the sprocket. attatch two pairs of mole grips to the bolts and pull. should come off no problem!unless the splines are worn and somebody has welded the old sprocket on? |
Let's hope not, but the evidence of that would be obvious from the front. I would guess that it just needs some gentle persuasion and a liberal dose of penetrating fluid. Good luck |
You might find that overtime the heat generated is causing it to stay on. I had this problem on one of my older bikes. I just gave it several large taps with a wooden mallet (or a hammer and a wooden block). Also direct heat from a flame torch usually shifts it...;) |
tried a bearing puller and will not budge is it possible for the thing to turmn slightly on the shaft as the holes dont look to line up exactly? |
Ducatis generally have a problem keeping the sprocket on the shaft not the other way around! Are you sure someone hasn't stuck a blob of weld on the back of it? |
not that i can see am giving up dont want to wreck the shaft will have ducati john have a look next time i am over |
loverobot> When you say "the holes dont look to line up exactly" I take it you mean the tapped holes in the sprocket and the holes in the retaining plate if you offer it up. That's the point of the groove with no splines on it on the shaft. Can you see the groove in front of the sprocket? The retaining plate sits in the groove, and it has to be rotated a little in the groove so that it lines up with the tapped holes in the sprocket (this is on re-assembly, if you see what I mean). if these holes weren't offset, there'd be nothing to stop plate and sprocket sliding along the shaft, past the groove, until it started rubbing on the grey plastic cover. But presumably if you've taken the plate off, you know this already? My guess'd be that the splines are clogged up with gunge. |
Hello loverobot maybe a stupid question, but how many teeth are on the sprocket. regards TopiToo |
the sporcket plate was off and i mean it looks like the splines have shifted? anyway plate back on and will get john to have a looksee now i have a chain question - see my other thread lol |
