Cylinder oil leak HELP please

After dropping out the engine and changing the O rings on the rear cylinder head its still leaking oil from that area.
Is there any other reason for the leak please ?
I know they all weep a bit but mine is chucking it out. I thought that the O rings would cure the problem.
Its a 91 900ss.
Help Kev !!!!:flame::flame::flame::flame::flame::flame:

Is it deffo the head - or are you spotting the oil deposits on the crankcase top?

If thats the case it could be the oil breather instead.

Only other things I can think of from the top of my head (after a nightshift) - is valve cover / head torque not correct / oil feeds ???

Good luck - Frank

Its the head, the top 6 cooling fins are dry as a bone.
The one on the joint is wet with oil.
Why should it still leak after changing the O rings ?
Operation went without a hitch. All changed over with no drama.
Is there another answer?
Oil breather was changed a month ago.
Help:mad:

Considered a nice VFR ?? :saint:

Henners...dont be naughty and go directly to the H*nda forum !!!

Kev, I didnt realise the head is only sealed using the 'O' rings - I honestly thought there was a gasket of some sort on top of the barrel.

Looking at the parts pdf it shows TWO DIFFERENT part numbers for the O rings used - could you have used wrong ones or got them mixed.

Otherwise - I'm stumped and can only think of awful things like distorted head or barrel OR perhaps your oil pressure is running too high for some reason...

CALL FOR SUPER-NELLY !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry - Frank

There are two different size O rings. One small one and two large.
Or did you mean two different types ?

UKRR 03-Apr-2006 13:33

My SS had an oil leak when the cylinder stud snapped - a common faul with early SS engines.
Strengthened studs are available

Red-leader 03-Apr-2006 14:30

No problems in that department all studs are at the correct torque. Thats what I cant understand, everything is as it should be !

Dibble 03-Apr-2006 14:33

so all your studs are up to the job ??? Mrs Leader will be happy .... shame about the messy leakage though ..... :P

cheers for the cuppa yesterday ..... :)

Henners 03-Apr-2006 15:12

Sounds like something's warped Kev ...

Red-leader 03-Apr-2006 19:20

Not heard of that as a problem on Ducs, and as its only ali wouldnt it torque out.
Still need Help
Kev

Did you make sure the small dowel was still in place ? Did you smear any liquid gasket on the o-rings before assembly? And clean off any old stuff?

Is the compression still good?

Screwy 03-Apr-2006 20:37

Probably of no help as I have never had the head of a belt 900 Duke but it sounds very like the bevel duke in construction , Is it possible one of the O rings has moved , been displaced on re-assembly and has been nipped between the head and barrel ? This happened on my old Darmah and caused a leak very much like the one you describe .

Red-leader 03-Apr-2006 23:32

Zimbo it all came away clean with no sealant of any kind present, so it just needed a little clean up with brake cleaner and put it back together clean. Is there supposed to be anything on the faces or the O rings ?

Scewy it looks like its coming apart again to make sure, but I dont think the rings would move during assembley as they were a good fit in the recesses.

Anyone done this and had complete success, Am I just un lucky :(

monstermob 998 03-Apr-2006 23:45

Kev - i take it you did use the green 'silicon' rings? not replace them with black rubber ones? dumb question i know - the green ones withstand higher pressure than the black ones

having just replaced the vertical head on my SS you havent instilled me much confidence :puzzled:but havent had a problem haveing the heads off three times now- i hold the rings in with a smear of grease when placing the head onto the barrell
