info/advice on Maserati 4200GT Coupe? looking at changing my current for wheels in the next month or 2, been looking at various cars to replace one of Stuttgart's finest and apart from the obvious Italian supercars (i wish! and far too bling) Maserati have caught my eye! Seeing as though there is a lot of Italian 2 wheeled machinery around here i thought see if there is any knowledge of the 4 wheeled variety. Looking at the 4200GT Coupe, same 4244cc V8 48v motor that is also in the Ferrari F430!:D (not quite the same state of tune tho:( ) but still 390bhp:D and with a Tubi it won't sound that much different!:frog: Anyone had/got/know anything about them? I hear horror stories of clutches in the cambiocorsa losing the plot after about 4k miles!:o and mention of budgeting £1/mile for maintanence:puzzled: Not too worried about that as i'm looking at manual boxes:) ![]() ![]() ![]() http://pictures.autotrader.co.uk/ATD...a?id=290421253 what does anyone think about them? It will be my daily drive, but i hardly do any miles commuting so fuel economy is not important (15mpg combined i think) |
Buy last weeks Autocar and they have a comparison test, that makes interesting reading |
Is this a f£$%in wind up?? |
errr :puzzled::puzzled: why? :puzzled: |
hey bud - my best mate has one - its his second one in a row - not my cuppa at all - its a bit gay - a bit fussy - and I deffo would NOT swap the porker for one. If you want to speak to him I will send you his number. Good luck!!!!! Khushy |
Aston Martin any day |
get a TVR cerbera thingy. you know the fast as fook one http://www.racinggreentvr.com/models/cerbera.asp [Edited on 4-4-2006 by keefer] |
How does £3000 for a service grab yer? |
like a large pair of bollock crushing nut crackers ? |
lol Moley:rodent: |
This is my snobby side . . . Its a bit like the boxter/911 debate - you only get one cause you cant afford the other (which you would really really like) and EVERYONE knows what a boxter owner would really like to be driving. Why get a Ferrari engined car - when what you REALLY want is a . . . . ??? :frog: Khushy |
i will grab an AutoCar, thanks. A £3k service is for pretty major belt service i imagine at a main dealer? so £1 a mile for maintence isn't a million miles off!!! Yes i would prefer a 360 (who wouldnt) but that car is not an A to B car everyday like a 911 and various others! I'm also not looking at spending 360 money (i would have to part with the 999r :o ) The Ferrari thing does have a bit of hairy chest/footballer image thing which isn't complimentary, whereas the maser is a bit more understated and imho cool? Quite happy to park that in a supermarket carpark etc only those in the know would know whats under the bonnet [Edited on 4-4-2006 by chillo] |
Chillo if your young, good looking and have plenty of wonga:( Why not. All the best to you. |
They don't do it for me - a friend had one - only for a short while though - he had a few niggly problems with it - and got rid. Stick with the porker. Tim |

thanks Jon, not sure i'm any of those:lol: but thanks anyway! its a big thing to wave goodbye to my porker! I have been looking at an older model 996 (mk1 GT3) to replace my current 16 month old 996C2. But the thought of having a tubi V8 maserati is very tempting! picked up AutoCar! the new XK looks great, but i'm still dreaming in green, white and red!?! aargh! |
Simon, get an SL55,job done !,running costs on those mazzers are huge, the 4 door version comes with free servicing from new ! |
some good points, i will get a test drive to make sure either way!? :eureka: |
|
thanks for the link! only listing the 3.2 v8 twin turbo, i'm looking at the newer 4.2 v8 n/a;) |
|
Can you afford one still under warranty? :puzzled: |
My mate was lucky enough to be in a position to buy a nice car for high days and Sundays. Always wanted a Ferrari, so went in to a Ferrari specialists and said that he was looking for a nice car to drive 3 to 4 days per week and commute during the summer about 15 mile each way. Ferrari specialist told him to buy a Porsche 911. Said it all as far as I was concerned. I would say the same about the Mas' your looking at. If you want an ultra reliable super car that can be used to drive around town or use on a track day then Porsche 911. Would not change what you already have, just update it. I have a 1986 Guards Red 911, I can leave it standing over winter and it will start first time and still do over 150mph :D Porsche 911 - only way to go. |
Goner cost you but classy and understated and the chicks dig um :o Manual twin turbo with tobacco leather and sadly no longer in existence. Written off buy an uninitiated Aston driver who insisted on turning off the traction control. Fool:lol: Only buy if you can afford one in main dealer warranty and sell each year after using it  That's the warranty not the car. Better than all the other super cars as not only can you afford the eighty grand, you can afford to loose the lot. How cool is that. |
have looked at CL55 previously, 911virgin don't flog masers, although i haven't ruled out getting another porker! not looking at the 3.2TT maser, only the newer 4.2 (4200) which would be new enough for it to be well within warranty, yet lost its initial depreciation! daily commute is 6 miles:D Not bothered about an ultra reliable car(i own a duke!) could tell you about a certain E46 M3 cab i wrote off a year and a half ago, (traction off!:barfy::o) |
I`ve driven a Bi Turbo masserati and found the performance stunning. I also found it far better fitted out than several Ferrari`s I`ve had the pleasure to drive and in fact think there a far more practicle car for the road. I like the way there very understated. |
maserati is much cooler than a new ferrairi - but an older ferrari???? i am not so sure - for the same sort of money(£30-40k at a guess??) why not go the whole hog and get a testarossa!!! servicing is worse as it is a flat 12 but hey - in for a penny in for a pound - i would get a testarossa as it has to be one of the tastiest ferraris of that era - the new ones are just a bit too tame. of course i can't afford a skoda at the moment ......(boo hoo), but i know what i like. |

Test drive then fill your boots  |
The maserati gets my vote. The husband of the lady I bought my CLK off had just bought a spider and it was bluddy lovely. Understated, classy and that model your looking at just sounds fantastic. The comparison to a 911 puzzles me. Sure its a fantastic car (ive driven a few), ultra reliable and looks great...but based on that comparison we'd all be riding gixer thous and not tapping away on the ducati sporting club forum !! A gixer thou makes mincemeat oout of a 999, its cheaper, faster, arguably more reliable an still looks great..but just ask yourself why we ride our dukes ! Im thinking of chopping my CLK in for the new Alfa Brera. I know i'll probably lose on the resale value if I bang a few miles on it (as you would with the maserati versus the porsche), and bits will fall off, but when I first saw it on the website..it just made my heart flutter...in exactly the same way that my dukes did/do. Its all about soul I guess ! I'm sounding a bit gay now after a few glasses of red so i'll sign off.. Good luck (you lucky b****d!) Nat [Edited on 7-4-2006 by Nattyboy] |
I'm with Nat on this. I was just getting ready to make my point and BANG, Natty pretty much takes the words right away from me, even the choice of bike was the same as what I was gonna use. Oh yeah, that Brera looks good, but I understand they will make the GT into a spider soon, nice. Might be my wife's next car. |
Nah sod em all buy a Honda civic sport with a masive 1.6 4 cyl motor :lol::lol: Does me  |
reason i'm looking at changing my 911 is that i have a very short commute to work, not so bothered about the reliability safety net of a brand new car anymore. If i keep it I will end up losing more on it than if i had bought say a 5 year old one!! If i sell in the next few months i won't end up losing too much. Hope to end up with £5-10k change when i have got a replacement. I did look at 355 fezzas but i consider that not to be a 365 days a year car no matter how short the distance?! Things i'm looking for in a car, sense of occasion, engine noise, performance, ergonomics! Current short list in no particular order: 911 GT3 mk1 BMW M3 CSL MASERATI 4200GT coupe |
Natty> The Brera's gorgeous! Especially with the Skyview roof. if you get one, gizza go, meester! 900MAN> There already is a Spider, but it's based on the Brera, not the GT. Don't think it's available in the UK yet. ![]() [edit] Available from May, apparently. [Edited on 8-4-2006 by moto748] |
I had to drive in the past Mazerati 3200 GT, and it was pain in a a$$ long journes.. Seats are not comfortable at all... Plus it was a manual and it was a nightmare to drive in traffic for hours in Central London. |
Would be a F355 for me. 360 Modenas plummiting in value with the 430 out. Cant see the 355 getting much lower in value than they are at the moment. Bottom end 355s now going for good 328 money. If youre bothered about resale I think I would be looking at 355s and a van for pottering around in! Like you say there not really a day to day car though. Always wanted a 355 and have saved every road test from every magazine over the years. Sad or what? |
please... no Ferraris.... :rolleye: Life is too short to drive a Ferrari - get a Lamborghini :D:P |
At my budget level its more like "life is too short to drive a Lada, get a FIAT", but its a cool T-Shirt! |
off to have a look at some masers this afternoon ![]() the running costs of Gallardo would make maser seem cheap!!:alien: |
went to jct brooklands in Leeds yesterday and had a good look at a red 4200 gransport, not to sure now? Looked very nice and the interior is a nice place to be, but alongside a challenge stradele and 430 i thought the colour wasn't right for the car?!? i know of someone who has a cambiocorsa in dark blue so i'm going to have a look at that.... |
Wouldn't spend my own cash on a Massers, cos of DEPRECIATION, I'd be very surprised if it levelled off much from eye watering to merely painful after a year. But there again most cars in that sort of bracket don't hold their value too well. I'd also have serious doubts about a Masser taking much of a pasting on the road never mind the track. (I have made some assumptions based on your "track" record!!!) You are really gonna struggle to better a Porsche, If you can stand being in fast cruise mode rather than big attack the Masser will be OK but also look at Astons, DB7 V12. Ray |
