Can\'t remove oil filter :-(
 
I stupidly thought that to save a few pounds and to learn a bit about servicing that performing an oil change myself was the way to go.

I tried to remove the filter using a removal strap that a friend lent me. Would not budge. SO I then stupidly banged a screw driver through it and that has just torn the filter.

Any ideas. Looks like I may well be going to Mondays BSB in the car.

Hello flanagaj

Halfords do a oil fitler nylon strap with a socket head,
good for getting leaverage.

I think they also do a chain version, but this is a pig to get
round the filter.

and use a this to tighten the filter up, a touch after hand tight.

Tighten a jubilee clip aroud the filter and undo with a C spanner.

Easy to try and unscrew the filter the wrong way when your lying on your back and the filter is upside down!

Just whack a long screwdriver through it a turn it out like everyone else does ;)

Since you've already tried the screwdriver method, and probably don't have enough filter left after tearing it for a strap wrench, you'll have to try drifting it out very gently.

There is a specialist tool available for extracting torn / damaged oil filters, but I can't remember the name.

If some one has a broken oil filter ,could they send it to me and i will try and make something up to remove it while its on the bike , ,once i get back to work that is :(

Thanks for the pointers. I am hopefully getting my hands on a decent filter wrench later today. I am sure that I am correct in that when positioned on the filter side of the bike the filter unscrews clockwise ?

Yes mate and when you put new one on just do it HAND tight !!!!!!

I had one like flanagi once took me a couple hours to fit a simple fiter :devil::devil::devil:

Surely the bottom of the engine *is* the right place?

Lying on your back and looking up towards the underside of the engine it unscrews anti clockwise ie to the left.

Nah, the pressure in the engine sucks the filter on realy tight over time, Bang a thick long screw driver through the upper part of the filter and use short jerky movements (anti clock wise) to your right, don't be scared it will budge.

Finally did it. The chap next door is a plant fitter and he lent me a decent filter removal tool.

What is even more depressing.

New Filter is leaking even after tightening up and one of the split pins has cracked whilst fitting the new chain.

I think next time I will pay a garage to do the work. The chian should be ok as the other link is ok.

Do i ride to BSB tomorrow, or wait until a new link has been put on ?

I had this once. After years of taking off oil filters with the proper tools and with the screwdriver method, I got stuck and one wouldnt shift end of!:o

I ended up destroying the filter case and was really up pooh creak.
I ended up cutting the old filter away, leaving only the metal outer case, still bolted to the engine cases. I then made up a tool consisting of a flat bit of steel bar with two BIG bolts that went up through the steel bar and into the original holes left at what was left of the top of the filter. (This bit of metal being really thick.)

I then layed the bike on its Side:o ( fairings off of course) and slotted the two bolts into the holes. I then turned with much brute force and off came what was left of the oil filter.

Lets just say that the last person to put it on had not put so much as a smear of oil on the rubber O ring.:mad: To this day I have never had a filter done up so tight!

had almost the same problem this week...changing the oil on my 748 and could i hell as like get the bloody filter off. think same issue of someone not smearing with oil and then just tightening it as tight as humanly possible.

in the end, i managed to get a strap type filter removal tool from halfords for £3 that has the strap made out of metal. took it off with a bit of brute but thought i would be knackered for a while.

I had the same thing after the main agent didn't lube the o ring. I used a special tool made up by Paul James to remove the stub of the oil filter which worked a treat.

If the filters been put on double tight the cup removers are rubbish: use a strap wrench every time IMO.
