748R slippper.... terrible terrible away from lights Well the beast has been nothing but perfect since i bought it and it's now a lovely piece of kit... However the slipper is getting on my nerves pulling away from lights.... i can't rev past about 2500rpm without the horrible horrible 'graunch' noise and a lot of jerkiness.... Now i know it's only the Traffic Light GP, but you have to have a deccent start away from the lights ;) thoughts ? |

I know that problem, They are almost a complete waste of time on the road,Ducati GB advised me to junk it and fit one from a 748S.That not only over doubled clutch service life but and much better feel and no noise. Horray |

Had the same thing with my STM ball & ramp - taking out the plates, cleaning them and reassembling definitely helped for a while. |
i love it Andy... i really do.... just not pulling away from a standstill... for that it's bloody poor.. it's worth it though for me. |

Dont have any issue's with mine...its a little grabby when cold but other than that its perfect.... I can see no point at all in spending out on a Bucci or STM slipper clutch when the Standard slipper clutch in the 748R is more than anyone on this board can use on track days or road riding * all the gear no idea * springs to mind................:P Phil |

i dont agree. Sure if you have a bike that you expolit in every way and its holding you back then change the part to make it better/faster.....but i dont grasp the " just because i can " attitude............ Why would i change the Slipper on my 748r when for what i use the bike for it does not hold me back or hinder me in anyway.....the bike is better than i will ever be.? Maybe some should step back to a 600 and learn to ride that...as im sure the current stock of 600'ss on the market place are fast enough for anyone on the road or track............. seeking the best kit sure.....but at some point you have to stand back and realise its obviously more that you could ever use and just blinged up for the bling factor.?...... Maybe thats to practical . 748r slipper I agree with Phil here totally, the standard slipper in my 748R is perfectly up to the job in hand never locks the back wheel when banging down thru the box, has never made any graunchin sound or juddered away from the lights, so in conclusion the boundaries of this clutch are beyond the limits of most people out there! BUT this is not the point this thread was started!! Weeksey is having problems with his R slipper he shouldnt be having, so the problem must lie somewere within the clutch, was it fitted correctly, are the plates serviceable and clean?? Has the spider spring broke?? |

Mine used to do it all the time, it's a combination of dirty plates and dodgy thrust bearing on the clutch rod apparently. FWIW I totally agree with Fil, the 748R slipper is perfectly well up to the job in all situations. I only replaced mine because I was fed up with paying out for new plates and baskets every year! Replacing it out of some imagined need for better performance is just spending money for the sake of it. In most cases a far better performance gain will be found by sorting out the suspension and brakes. And no, you don't need a slipper clutch! Jen. |
Am I missing something here? Surely the noise and judder on pulling away is caused by the condition of the plates within the clutch and nothing else. When you pull away from lights the clutch centre is fully down off the ramps and locked against the base plate. Therefore the number of ramps or the type of ramp (plain or with ball-bearing) has no effect. Sure, the fact that the clutch slips during over-run causes the condition of the plates to deteriorate quicker than they would in a standard clutch. Isn't this the only reason that slippers sometimes exhibit judder and noise when pulling away? I have a 748R which had the three plain ramp clutch fitted. I have to say that I found it to be a complete pain. It only ever worked reliably for me for a day or two after being serviced (track days only). Beyond that I might as well have had an ordinary clutch. I've just changed it for a six-ramp ball-bearing type (Sigma) and I'm hopeful for better performance between services. The original clutch juddered and was noisy when the plates were dirty or worn. I did find that fitting an extra dished steel plate improved things. |
Well i know Nelly said the plates were a 'modified' type and virtually brand new, so i'm assuming that's not the case on this one fella.... Dirty is possible though... will have a look after i get back from recent TDs |
Check the dished plate ( the one with a dot) lay it on a flat surface and check that it has not flattened. Mine did , and when i put a new dished plate in , it was sorted. |

Nowt wrong with the standard 748R slipper when the plates are assembled correctly, which can take a bit of swapping around time to find the best solution, I've been running the same 748R clutch for 4 years now, originally it was in my 916 used for road and track (SoT racing)and now it is in my 996. Since putting it in the 996 it now suffers the same problem as Weeksy's which it didn't when in the 916. Problem is I didn't remove it from the 916 so the plate order may have got swapped. In other bikes I have a JHP and a FBF bearing and ramp slipper clutch and the 748R clutch compares very well and will do for most people, hence me still having one in the 996. I know Mark Edwards had one in his 748RS when he beat Phil Bevan to the NG SoT championship title about 4 years ago, after every race his mate would pull it apart, clean it measure the thicness of the plates as a pack and carefully rebuild, some times fitting new dished plates. |

Weeksy2...... Don't look too much into getting the clutch issue resolved.....mine does exactly the same....I live with it. OK - it's a bit of a p*sser away from the lights when the 600/750/1000 zips off down the road but as soon as you get to the first corner, while they're wobbling into it - ride ride the outside of them - lean over and flick their kill switch to 'off'....... works for me.... Take it easy dude.... Enjoy.... :D |
So ladies,If you want it for the road or want to 1/4 mile it only and it winds you up,fit one from a 748S,if you do track days fit an STM or similar and or do all the afore mentioned mods. Is that about the long and short of it?????????? |
Only once had problem you describe and it was before fitting a very open clutch cover. Simply stripped out the plates which were dirty/dusty one even a slight surface rust!! Cleaned with a little 1200 grit on the steels and eh presto fine again. I now simply get the compressor and whilst the engine is running pull in the clutch and blow out all the s**e, never had the problem since I started doing that, maybe a coincidence?!?!?! Slippers will get dirty quicker simply by the fact they are slipping if you are gearing down quickly, I find there is a lot of s**e blown out after a trackday working it hard.
