Case protector against chain breakage

just had a text from my mate Adrian to say they have made a prototype in steel that we will try on my bike this weekend, if all is OK we will knock out a batch of stainless ones.
Also getting made at the moment are the rear Bellypan brackets for the 748/916/996/998 models, masde in stainless and are for use with race bellypans.

We will also be looking at making stainless brackets to prevent the sidestands flipping up on SS models, monsters etc.

Now we want a full test m8, this means hack sawing nearly all the way through your chain for certain breakage to test the effectiveness :)

skidlids 10-May-2006 19:07

Well i did snap a chain a few months back and took a piece out of my alternator case on my 996 so I have an idea of whats needed

skidlids 12-May-2006 09:38

Looks like the proto-type fitted the alternator casing I gave to Adrian, so he has jsut done the first batch of 20 of which about half are already spoken for.
I will pick them up this weekend and hopefully get pics sorted of them off and on the bike as well as a final price to DSC members.

BDG 12-May-2006 10:38

Kev, i'll have 2 please, no i'm not greedy one is for Azzy with my old SPS.

Harv748 12-May-2006 10:45

One for me please Kev...you know what these chains are like:o

FiscusFish 12-May-2006 11:13

I'd like two too please.

Iconic944ss 12-May-2006 11:19

Just to clarify Kev, is this the same design as the discontinued Ducati item and if so, can it be fitted behind the sproket cover or will the cover no longer fit?

As an aside - I've asked MPL ( http://www.mpl-tuningparts.de/ ) - if they could incorporate a case protector into a cover design to provide both in one item.

Cheers - Frank.

skidlids 12-May-2006 11:49

As yet I haven't seen them myself and have yet to fit one on the bike, I will hopefully do this late Saturday and have it fitted for Sundays rideout to Popham.
I haven't got a front sprocket cover on my 996 so I will be happy enough to continue using it like that with the gaurd fitted. If a cover doesn't fit I will look into seeing if the design is worth the trouble of altering so the cover can be fitted. This is why we have initially only done a small batch, if it can't be used with the sprocket number it will limit the amount of people interested, prior to today 11 are already spoken for even if the cover can't be fitted.

Rushjob 12-May-2006 12:25

Skids.... one for me please but prefer to keep the sprocket cover on if poss.
Andy

Rick 12-May-2006 12:35

I will have one also pls, Also prefer to keep the sprocket cover

andyb 12-May-2006 12:38

I made a one off for my bike in stainless, and retained the sprocket cover as per the discontinued item.

One here also please.

andys 900ss 12-May-2006 23:12

Two for me, please Kev

Andy

YMFB 12-May-2006 23:53

I would also like one if there is enough, although that looks unlikely from the first batch anyway. With this amount of interest from a few DSC'ers makes you wonder why the factory stopped doing them.

GsxrAge 12-May-2006 23:53

Yes please 1 for me please Skids !

thanks

Age

a piccie taken from in line with the chain, showing where how it sits........

loverobot 13-May-2006 13:21

i would really like one as i have been fitting my own chains lol

skidlids 13-May-2006 19:45

Just fitted one to the 996, had to tweek it slightly with a pair of pliers but it is now in place and I will be out on the bike tomorrow,
I haven't tried fitting a sprocket cover as i don't run one on the 996,
Also I am running a 14T front sprocket and have loads of clearance so should be OK with a 15T, I will find out when I fit one to the 998 Hybrid in the next day or two.
At some time I will try and fit the sprocket cover as it looks as if it should fit OK once the bit of plastic protruding like a small shelf is cut off from the inside as the stainless protector comes around this far

Jasper 13-May-2006 20:18

I'll have one too, please. Was in the process of making some, but as you've already done it!!

chris.p 13-May-2006 22:54

As Jasper is not going to make his I will have two of yours please Kev.

How much do think the case protectors will be.

ROACHMAN 16-May-2006 19:33

Dont forget me Kev (998 model please 15t)

skidlids 16-May-2006 20:43

After showing them to a few people at the weekend (Roachman, Nattyboy, Jacko, Karl, Eddie and a few more) and asking them about price, we have settled on £10 each to DSC Members.

Demand looks quite strong and I have asked for another 20 or so to be made, but to hold off making them until I know if any mods will be needed to fit the sprocket cover.

I have taken pics of the one on the 996 and hope to fit one to the 998 before taking it to the BMF and will see if I can get a sprocket cover to fit with it in place.

bradders 16-May-2006 20:46

sounds good Kev

with the chain and sprocket looking like that kev, have yoo took out insurance against it breaking as well?:lol:

skidlids 17-May-2006 17:23

Andy the chain was new back in November after breaking the previous one, the front sprocket has been like that since the Silverstone trackday in March when the rear Renthal Sprocket carrier decided to move along the cush drive and up against the hub causing the chain to run off line.
The rest of the mess is caused by the Slipitin chain lube, that and it gets used in all types of weather

andyb 17-May-2006 17:59

you see theres your problem...........all types of weather!

Loz 17-May-2006 18:52

skidlids 27-May-2006 02:45

Still haven't tried the sprocket cover

But here is a pic of the protector off the bike

So if anybody isn't worried about the spocket cover fitting (track/race bikes) and wants one then let me know and I can sort P&P and get some in the post

Loz 27-May-2006 19:37

If the sprocket cover can be retained, mark me down for one, Kev. Cheers mate!
