How Many Miles Until Your Fuel Light Comes On I'm sure that when I got the bike (748BP) in sept i was getting around100 miles before the light came on, whereas now it's around 85-90 miles. could be that i'm riding harder due to having bonded with the bike and also the roads are now dry. just wondering what is usual for a 748 cheers :bouncy: |
my 748E would manage about 125-140 before the light came on...996 isnt much worse with normal riding, around 110-130...unless I out with Berks boys following Skids then its about 75!! |
when i first got the st2 i got nearly 200!!! im now down to about 140 if i really ride steady 110 normal |

Mine too. Sometimes more, on a run. I got 182 miles out of a tankful the other day! I think race cans have quite an effect on fuel consumption, but whatever you're running, 85-90 surely can't be right. Are you filling up to the brim, zhedd44? If you are, then you should be putting 15-15.5 litres in. Reserve is 25-30 miles. |
140 - 150 748R :D |

i put it on the side stand before i fill her up (oo er) and generally don't try to squeeze every last drop in as last time i did that, i had fuel sloshing down the overflow/breather thingy. i'm running cored standard 45's (with the correct JHP chip), pipercross air fliters and most of my riding is (sub)urban - outskirts of north london. i do like to get a move on, and it is quite hilly where i live, but 85-90 miles before the light doesn't seem right. come to think of it, the other 748 i had for only 3 weeks (got nicked) would do around a hundred. perhaps i just rag the bike everywhere - passengers in my car comment on how fast (but safe) i tend to drive, so maybe i'm the same on the bike....dunno really, i don't like to hang around, but i'm certainly no lavalia - not by any stretch of the imagination :puzzled: [Edited on 10-5-2006 by zhed44] |
.......genuinely about 80 miles before the warning light comes on. Does that make me bad ? If it makes much difference ..........50mm Termigs & a DucPerf chip....... And I thought I was being restrained (sort of)....... Still.......worth every drop huh ? I'd run it on champagne if I had to....... second thoughts.......bad idea....the wife would syphon it out and drink it all.......best stick with SoopaDooopa Unleaded |
About 120 on a 916 with Termis |
errr 80-90 on normal days but around 110 when I am being a good boy  |
100 miles - 748 bip 50mm Termis/JHP chip. |
02, 748 bip bedding in tyres 165! [Edited on 10-5-2006 by Martinp] [Edited on 10-5-2006 by Martinp] |
This is the first year that I've had the bike, but at the moment I generally reckon on 90 miles. |
140 - 150 748R at slow pace and 70 - 90 when having some fun:bouncy::bouncy: |
So far it seems like about 120, mainlly on a rural commute. However it also seems that if you warm the bike up thoroughly before using it to look after the rockers, then the length of trip has quite an impact too. If I use the best part of a tank in one ride it goes up to around 140. |
140 -150 748s |
Dunno - my fuel light sender is fooked so it's a bit erratic. Generally look for a garage when I've got 80-90 miles on the trip meter. Normally, just after filling up I get the fuel light "on"... :puzzled: Hey, I didn't buy my bike because it would be cheap to run!! RX |
We have a winner! 748E and 200 before the light comes on - shame speedo/trip is in kms  !!! Tend not to trust the fuel light and only rely on the trip - a throwback to my old 907 which would go from half full to empty on the guage on the same straight under acceleration and braking! |
ST4 - I usually fill up after 150 miles, the fuel light is nearly always on for the last 5 or so. Im too chicken to see how far it would go before it ran out but the most i have done without running out is 165. |
Never gone below 140, even when having major fun. 02 748R :P |
110 to 125 on brimmed tank 748E with standard exhaust cans. |

yeah, but no but, sitting indoors watching internet p*rn doesn't use any petrol ;) |

I'm sure if you shed a couple of sweaters you'd up your fuel consumption Glyn :devil::P:lol: |
118 exactly - but then I'm a featherweight so must be wasting fuel somehow :devil::devil::devil: On a 996 that is About 135 on a Monster - cheap as chips :D [Edited on 11-5-2006 by Redruth] |
this is bizarre then as it either means: a) i ride very, very hard (i don't think i do) b) you all ride very slowly (again, probably not the case) c) i've had two 748's in a row with dodgy fuel senders d) your bikes all have reserve petrol tanks in the frame like a buell :) [Edited on 11-5-2006 by zhed44] |
600 ss 190 miles before fuel light came on tonight--- was starting to think the bulb had blown!!!!! topped up at 193 miles with 14.2 litres=3.1 gallons so thats 62.2 miles to the gallon or 13.6 miles (8.45 km) to the liter ----- cheaper than chips Ruth! now if i changed the front sprocket up a tooth to 15 it would be even cheaper:cool: |
ABOUT 115 -120 WHEN IT WAS A 748,NOW ITS A 853 ITS ABOUT 100MILES HARD RIDING BEFORE THE LIGHTS ON AND THATS WITH PUTTING OVER £13 IN THE TANK WHEN FILLING UP. MY OLD R6 WOULD BE ABOUT 100 MILES BEFORE THE LIGHT CAME ON BUT WHEN I WAS OUT RIDING WITH A MATE RUNNING IN HIS CBR6 I GOT 160 OUT OF THE R6 BEFORE THE LIGHT CAME ON, IT DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE HOW FAR YOU OPEN THE THROTTLE !!!:lol::lol: |

Dunno, I'll ask my mechanic. You can't expect me to know something like that, I can only just remember which circuit to turn up at  |
115 - 125 miles. 748S with termi's. Right hand not always full of lead. ;) |
Most modern bikes run to about 110 before running onto reserve, that's about how long your'e arse lasts! Fuel warning lights are very unreliable, set your trip meter when you fill up and start to look for fuel after 110 miles or so and you won't go far wrong! I have run my 851 for 165 miles, but on another time run out bone dry at 122 miles,so stick to the 110 miles formula and you should be on the safe side. Steve |
OK, so the gauge might be inaccurate...... I normally fill up as soon as the light comes on, she usually takes about £12 worth and I more or less brim the tank (but I don't overdo it) when she's on the sidestand. And when I fill up, I always reset the odo Taking the amount of fuel used as an indication, I get about £12 to each 80-90 miles on the odo How does that seem? :eureka: [Edited on 12-5-2006 by zhed44] |
90 miles today , 748r with 50mm termi's. |
Or more to the point, how many miles do you get once the light comes on, managed 28 on my old yamaha, how does that compare to the ducati? |
'Bout the same. I'd allow for 25 miles. I've done over 30 once or twice, but that's really pushing it... Plus, y'know, it's not really a good thing to use the very last drop of fuel in your tank; it increases the risk of crud (or water) from the bottom of the tank getting into your rinjectors. [Edited on 14-5-2006 by moto748] |
Seeing as it has stopped raining... I just finally emptied a tank - 140 miles as the light came on :) |
just been out, light on at 140 miles |
The less the better!!! I just keep pouring it in. It's the main vice in my life. If the worlds oil is going to run out , i want to die knowing i had my fair share. |
Once upon a time, in the darkest, deep night in torrential rain in the middle of nowhere in France on the way to the Bol, I managed 47 miles on my 748SP with the fuel warning light on. I can tell you I was worried and doubly relieved to when I came across an open fuel station on the autoroute. |
only got to 116 miles before the light came on today.. 748 with termis Simon |

Too bloody right! I'm with you there. |
Thanks ath748, glad i'm not the only one riding in a reliability trial. LESS IS MORE. |
