Anyone got a weber BBQ ?

Looking for a gas bbq and the weber q200 looks good...not cheap at £200 (plus stand/cover) but it looks really well made and I just wondered if it was worth the extra when homebase have got their own labels ones for £90 on offer !

At this stage I should point out im a complete cabbage when it comes to anything remotely connected to ccoking and ive never had a gas bbq before..

Any comments welcome...wether its on the merits (or not) of gas versus charcoal..or pointers on what to look for..

I bought a 2 burner Outback - not cheap but still in great nick after living permanently outside for 2 1/2 years and really good results with it.
Mmmmm steak on the barbie....... yum

Funnily enough..that was the other brand ive looked at (the one attached)..only thing is none of the muppet sales staff could tell me where the grease drips as theres holes all round the bottom..mind you-its excellent value for money..I can get one of the net for £120 with a cover !

I have a traditional Outback, which I crashed ! it fell over and broke the handle on the top lid. I phoned Outback and told them the truth, they very kindly send me a replacement handle FOC the next day. Top Service and for that alone I will definitely buy another Outback when the time comes.

We bought the One Touch Silver charcoal Weber last year. I was so used to scorching everything on the outside of the meat and finding out it was still pink in the middle that I was dubious whether there was any alternative (in terms of charcoal BBQs), or maybe it was just me seeing as I can burn just about anything I cook. Plus I really got fed up with looking as though I'd spent an extra hour under the sun lamp having sweated my b0llox off turning and turning and turning the meat.

I favoured charcoal because of the extra flavour you got from the smoke, etc. I don't know much about gas BBQs but felt that you could just as easily get the same results by cooking the meat in the oven or under the grill. Maybe there are ways to enhance the flabour when using a gas BBQ it's just I don't know about them.

Anyway to cut a long story short the Weber was the best thing I ever bought in terms of BBQs. You fire it up, put the lid on and let the coals heat up. When ready put the meat inside on the grill, put the lid back on and wait. Resist the temptation to keep taking the lid off to check the meat as this causes flare ups and the meat to scorch (the instructions give you a rough idea when to start having a look under the lid. Turn the meat once and replace the lid. Hey presto the result was perfectly cooked meat, with loads of flavour.

We even cooked an entire chicken on ours last summer. Basted the chicken, popped it inside and left it to cook for about an hour and half. And according to those who tucked in it was very tender, moist and perfectly cooked. I swear by these devices now and haven't burnt a single sausage since. It couldn't be easier. And you get to share a beer or two with friends and not spend your entire time, tongs in hand hunched over a hot BBQ. :bouncy:

A friend of mine that used to work for Camping Gaz told me that as you cook when the charcoal is white not black & smokey the flavour comes from the burning fat and juices not the combustable fuel.

Having used both I would suggest that if you are cooking for less than ten I would go with charcoal, if its for a major party then gas is easiest.

IMHO

Have had both charcoal and gas bbq's and found both to be a waste of effort. I now have a huge George Foreman grill and have found it to be better. I know you need an electric supply.

Comet currently have them on offer

Blasphemer!!!!!

I'm not a fan of charcoal bbq's because they take ages to sort out etc. With gas your heat is almost instant and you have finer control over the heat for whatever you happen to be cooking. Much more flexible.

If I was buying now I'd get one of these:

This way you've got the flat plate so you can do eggs - crucial for bbq'd bacon and eggs in the morning. You can also do things like singapore noodles!

Ahh, does it get any better?!

Nat, I'll keep an eye out for the mushroom cloud explosion, will then grab rugrat/missus and a pack of sausages... will oversee the cooking, don't fancy food poisoning..;)
