996sps

How many 996sps were manufactured ?

What month and year did manufacture start and finish?

What is the difference between the 996, 996s and 996sps?

What came as standard when purchased from the dealers new, accessories etc.?

Anything to be aware of when buying second hand, what to look out for?

Any questions that you suggest I ask the seller?

What value or what price for a 996sps 1999 (T) 3.5k miles?

Thanks ladies and gents.

Richard.

I think theres a thread on here somewhere that runs through all the specs of different year SPSs. Of the top of my head the 996 was about 112bhp and the 996SPS and 996S had 123bhp. Lots of discussion whether the 996s had Ti rods etc. General opinion seems to be the MY2000 996sps is the one to go for as it has Ohlins front and rear. Probably the sps will always be worth more than a S Do a search on here and you will find tons of info on them all.

All cracking bikes, good luck!

The late SPS is the one to go for 2000+ - this is the one that had Ohlins front and rear.

I reckon the '99 one you're looking at would have Showa forks.

Worth waiting for a later one if you can - much more desirable. as for number sold - not sure - but these were not a limited edition run.

And here. Worth a search through the archives as there is more info and argument about these than you can shake a stick at.

Even at that mileage I would be asking the seller if the cams and rockers have been checked for wear. The SPS seems to be particularly bad in that respect

97-99 sps with showa as it is a true classic with same power as later ones - later sps is R wannabe IMHO

As they brought the ohlin fork version out 3 months after i bought mine, for the same price, i was not impressed. i would have been quite happy being a wannabe :D :D

Have to agree with you there Bradders. I rode both '99 and '00 SPS with Showa and Ohlins front respectively and went for the '99 model.

Why?

Couldn't tell the difference between the front ends on the road, despite giving them both a good go.

Ohlins forks look way too bling for my taste - the SPS is a 'bareback' bike by nature and the Showas just look more 'bareback' to me.

I was told from some 'reliable' sources that the Ohlins forks on the '00 model are prone to blowing seals much more than the Showas on the '99.

If Showas were good enough for Foggy they are good enough for me ;-) - as you say ... "classic"

The price - I got my W reg '99 SPS for £6K with 6,500 miles on the clock and a good full service history. It is damn-near mint. All the others I saw were worse condition and much more expensive - and the '00 models were more expensive still.

My advice? Take your time. Get yourself a nice, clean, '99 SPS. Deck it out with a few understated extra bits of carbon and some rear-sets, get it set-up properly (dyno and suspension) and enjoy probably the purest-Ducati riding experience there is.

Mine still makes me tingle every time I open the garage. Beautiful. :D

...and to add to davie hicks, get the showas rebuilt with better internals and its as good as any ohlins! (well, non R&T ones anyway!!)

As far as I know, the cheap Ohlins forks are made in Japan and are not very special. Only the top of the range are genuinely Svvveddishh. They are owned by Yamaha after all.

I put a set of race-tech valves in the Showas on my 99 SPS and they feel just as good as the cheaper Ohlins.
