running on one

Am starting up new grid from now, 600ss running only on one pot.
I've tried everything to get this bloody thing running on two, it don't wanna know. I've replaced everything with new stuff (the whole electrical system). There is a great spark at the plugs but it just won't fire on the front. I'm completly out of ideas and dosh, and i won't be going to CC if i can't get in running. Engine is fine, just can't figure it out. Any sensible ideas are welcome (or cheap engine). Failing that would all the riders in class B pull a plug for the races next week. Just off to get my gun.

Must be fule if the spark is ok. Are you getting fule on the plug?

Andy C 01-Jun-2006 21:45

fuel going in, front plug is wet. Back cyliner is running fine.

paynep 01-Jun-2006 22:04

1. What happens if you swap the plugs?

2. Are you sure that the braided wires from the pickups in the engien are going to the right CDI? Try swapping them over.

3. Have you checked the compression?

4. Go to pub

HTH !!

Are the valves set right??
Have you checked the woodruff keys in the cam sprockets and the driving pulleys??
Seems you have done everything else. Im stumped

Andy C 01-Jun-2006 22:28

You did manage to get it running on 2 at one point tho didnt you??
If that is the case then it cant really be mechanical, Got to be an elec issue somwhere,
Wot you need is a nice 620 mate

Andy C 01-Jun-2006 22:39

compression test ok on both cylinders, valve timing spot on. Had BSD double check these for me. They came up with the same numbers as me.

Andy C 01-Jun-2006 22:41

thinking of shedding the 620 already!

Yea mate, It was always the case that it will be prepped and raced but up for the right offer. I have done a load more on it the week, moto gp pipes the lot, does look good and sounds like rolling thunder.
There is a part of me that wants to do thunderbikes, I live by the rule that if i dont do it now i never will, Hasty, Probably but thats just the way i am.

Andy C 01-Jun-2006 22:50

don't know anyone with a 583 motor kicking about do you.

Scooter916 01-Jun-2006 22:54

I sold the one I had with my 583 to Kev Mooney so he has one but i feel pretty certain he wants to keep hold of that, I will keep my ear to the ground for you though m8

Andy what have you changed I take it you have changed the coil, the CDI unit, spark plugs, I know you say its sparking but a break in a HT wire or plug itself would still give a spark but may cause problems under load.

As suggested a compression check is needed in case valves aren't seating

phil_h 01-Jun-2006 23:44

I think you have to change one thing at a time now, starting with swapping the plugs from front to rear, to prove that each pair of items will work on the rear cylinder - even a new plug can be duff.
You havnt mentioned the carbs - have they been apart ?
If so, are both the diaphragms working properly (you can test by hand by carefully pushing them against the springs) cos that may well stop one starting (!)
Have you flushed the float bowls to make sure its not water making the plug wet ?
If you flushed the float bowls was there any muck - cos that might have blocked the pilot jets.
Have you tried a squirt of special starting-juice (cant remember what its called) into the front when the back is turning the engine over ?

time for bed now
good luck
phil
btw - where are you in case someone wants to come round ?

skidlids 01-Jun-2006 23:55

Andy lives across the road from the BMF at Peterborough which is why we had the pleasure of his company a couple of weekends ago
